Very Disappointing
Whilst we didn't stay at the hotel we did eat in the Skerries Restaurant which forms part of it. On the positive side the staff were friendly and showed us to the bar for a pre-meal drink on arrival. The emphasis is on seafood from Orkney but the menu also contains a wide range of meat dishes none of which we sampled. Was slightly irritated by the fact that although our booking was for 8 we didn't get shown to the restaurant until 8:45. It wasn't as if they were particularly busy as only 3 other tables were filled despite it being a Saturday... more
Fantastic!
This hotel is wonderful. In a very central area with regular bus service, bus stop literally right outside the hotel so we didnt need to take the car anywhere at all to get around. The staff are very friendly, and are always happy to help and to chat. The food is fantastic, we were staying bed and breakfast, and the food was lovely, and the staff are very flexible in catering for just how you like ur food cooked. There was also the option of breakfast being brought to your room, for a small charge. The room was lovely, very... more
Not for single room travellers!
A friend and I booked a single room each for 2 nights. Hers was tiny but OK. Mine was dreary but the worst problem was the NOISE like a vibrating sort of banging periodically - it was unbearable! After much complaining they moved me to a twin room which was OK for one but the en suite would have been tiny for 2 persons. The breakfast was good and the staff friendly but do not stay in room 4 !!!!
Loved it except for the Noise
We spent 3 nights at the Dunstane House- stayed in a lovely room with a huge 4-poster bed, which my very tall husband appreciated. Staff pleasant and helpful except that they agreed to ring our room at 6 the morning we were to leave and did not. (Our backup alarm clock worked!) One caveat- there is no A/C and when they have private parties on the ground floor at night you can hear them- at least we could in our second-floor room. If it had been a hot evening and we'd had to open the windows it would have been even noisier since the... more
Not worth the money, not worthy of 4 stars
This hotel is quite expensive, and from the photos published in the Scottish tourist guide as well as the 4 stars assigned to it, we assumed that it would be a decent place to stay. Sorry to say, we were extremely disappointed with our choice. We had taken 2 rooms for 3 nights; one was a twin room on the top floor, and was actually quite nicely decorated. The second was a double room on the ground floor, and the only word I can think of to describe it is ghastly. That we were charged 85 pounds a night for it is absolutely criminal.... more
If only the room would have been a bit larger
I was lucky to still get a room since my reservation came pretty late. I was advised by the hotel staff that they still had a room available, however with no telephone. I didn't need one, so I said yes, but it turned out the room was really tiny. It was labeled as "double" room, and being a single traveller I already had problems fitting in. It was either my suitcase standing next to the bed or me. I am not sure how it would have worked with two people. There was no cupboard for clothes to put in, so I had to live out of the suitcase, no... more
Highly recommend
I would absolutely stay here again. My room was lovely even down to the shortbread and tea. I ate at the Pub my 2nd night and had wonderful meal of steamed mussels and a pint of Orkney's Dark Island beer. The staff were both helpful and informative. It was a bit of a walk from Waverly so make use of the Haymarket station or a cab if you are carrying luggage even if it is light for a weekend as I was.
The Highlight of our Trip[
After toiling around the city of Edinburgh for hours after missing our train back to London (and also getting stuck in an elevator for an hour), My wife and I came upon the Dunstane House. The house itself is breathtaking. From the four poster beds and high ceilings, to the plethora of Scotches available in the ornate bar downstairs. The staff was very accomodating to our needs. We just wish we had found the place earlier in our trip. I highly recommend staying at the Dunstane House if you are ever in Edinburgh.
fabulous scottish retreat!
My husband and I stayed at the Dunstane Hotel in February this year, and loved every minute of it. The owners (Derek and Shirley) have managed to combine traditional welcome with a modern attention to detail in everything from the decor (4 poster beds) to the meals (the Full Scottish breakfast will leave you just that -- full!) and the restaurant serves really fresh local dishes, usually with a fantastic culinary twist. We were keen to see as much of Edinburgh as possible in our 3 day break and managed such a lot. The hotel is well placed... more
