End of Season at Lagos Mare

"A lovely hotel to stay in on Naxos. We were there at the end of the season and I was a little afraid that there would be that 'winding down ' feeling but the staff maintained friendliness and efficiency right through to the end!

A great position with plenty of places to relax and catch the sun. The rooms were a good size and scrupulously clean. We were very impressed with the breakfast and particularly the variety of the food and drinks.

I would suggest that people staying here have their own transport or hire some as there is a lot to draw you out of the immediate area (exploring Naxos town/ other beaches etc)

The Lagos Mare was great and would definitely stay there again.

Pros and Cons -- Use Caution

"Not bad with some amenities, but the web site was very misleadeing and price was no bargain. More accurate representation would go a long way.

Pluses:

- Owner is very nice and works hard to make guests happy

- Some nice amenities (jacuzzi, massage shower with lots of jets)

- Pool area is nice

- Naxos is beautiful

Negatives:

- Where's the beach view? Don't expect to relax on your balcony with a view of the ocean.

- Rooms were somewhat sterile -- not very romantic

- Location: about a 10 minute car drive to city center; 10-15 walk to nearby town / restaurants / cafes / supermarket

Management response from lagosmare, 18 Mar 2008

Regarding the negative comments of our esteemed customer , we would like to mention the following: - our hotel has either side sea view rooms, or front sea view rooms or swimming pool view rooms. It depends on the room type that our customer selects. - in our website , everyone has the full and precise picture of how our rooms are decorated. - We are indeed 10 min car drive to the city center, however we are right at the village of Agios Prokopios with many restaurants(one of these right outside the hotel), mini markets(150m distance from our hotel) etc. With honour Vassilis Lapanaitis Business Director Lagos Mare Hotel

Disappointing

"We were really looking forward to our stay here because the hotel was new, highly-rated and the website promised so much. That's why were so disappointed to find that the room was as small and sterile as any anywhere else. You wouldn't know you were in Greece from the decor. When we asked for an upgrade, which we were happy to pay for, we were told that the bigger rooms only had one double bed. This would not serve our needs as we would be more comfortable in the only other option, two twins together.

The bathroom was tiny and the AC leaked on our first day. (It was however promptly repaired.) The AC did not work unless you left the key in the slot which meant that the room got very hot very fast every time you left.

The promised sea view from the tiny balcony was available only if you stood on tiptoe and leaned precariously over the railing. The best view was of another hotel right next door. There was no privacy at all on the balcony.

The buffet breakfast was the worst we had in Greece.

The beach was farther away than we expected and would not be easily accessible to those with smaller children or who have difficulty walking, especially in the extreme heat.

Aside from that, the pool and public areas were stunningly beautiful, and very family friendly. This would be a good resort for children. The bus to town stopped right outside which was very convenient. Staff was attentive and service excellent. But we enjoyed other hotels on other islands more.

Slice of Paradise

"What a perfect place to wind-up our 2-week tour of Greece! My best friend and I spent 5 wonderful nights at Lagos Mare and seriously wished for another 5 when it was eventually time to say good-bye. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful and never once did they roll their eyes when we asked to borrow their laptop for the umpteenth time. :)

The grounds and rooms were immaculate, not to mention the rooms were twice the size of the typical Greek hotel rooms we encountered elsewhere on our trip. The bathroom was fantastic, with tons of space

and withOUT the usual juggle-the-showerhead-while-you-try-to-shampoo-your-hair setup. The breakfast buffet each morning was above and beyond our expectations and consisted of traditional Greek fare, as well as more American fare. And the fresh-squeezed OJ was to die for!

While the hotel isn't right on Prokopios Beach, it is only a short walk down the hill. I would recommend, though, renting an ATV down the street from the hotel and using that to explore the beautiful beaches in the area - Anna and Plaka are a little further away and are definitely worth seeing. Despite the beauty of the Greek beaches, we ended up spending most of our time poolside at one of Lagos Mare's two pools where there was music, a pool bar and plush towels available - plus, it was a nice reprieve from the wind.

Lagos Mare was simply the best hotel we could have hoped for on our girls' trip. The staff is amazing, the location is perfect, the grounds are beautiful and relaxing and the rooms are full of amenities to make it feel like home. My next trip to Greece, I'm seriously considering bypassing everything else and going straight to

Lagos Mare on Naxos - no kidding.

beautiful days...

"We had stayed at Lagos Mare for 14 days at the end of September and we had loved both this hotel and island

We stayed in a standard room which was quite comfortble.

The bathromm was large with a hydro jet available but not with a lo of amenities inside.

The breakfast was served besides the pool and it was fantastic with a lot of Naxian specialies.

The staff was extremely helpful and good

Also, there was an elavator but i am not sure if it was on operation after midnight.

The rooms and the surrounding areas were spotless clean

Generally, this was one the finest hotels in our trip in Greece (after Grande Brittania in Athens) and for surely we will come back again.

Elegant!

"Hotel Lagos Mare staff greeted us at the entrance with a warm welcome and smile. We were immediately relieved of our luggage and escorted to the hotel lounge for a complimentary cocktail as the check-in was at

13:00. The gracious lobby space was characterised

by an impressive aquarium tank which really made us feel relaxed. We found the grounds to be beautiful, elegant and relaxing. Other reviewers have

complained about the poor service, but we did not find that to be true at all. Ultimately, Lagos Mare is a hotel for guests who wish to be taken care of unobtrusively. Whenever we needed staff, they were readily available. The room itself was

comfortable and plain with a lot of facilities but with a side sea view and not sea view.

We hope to return to Lagos Mare in the near future as Naxos is one of the most "virgin" island of Cyclades yet.

Loved the Lagos Mare

"We had recently visited the island of Naxos which is located in the Cyclades. A beutiful place with a lot of different things to do. We stayed at a newly opened hotel about 5-10 minutes outside of the main "chora" town. It is built in the classic cycladic style with the white wash walls and cubist style. There were many amenites that included two pools, which my children enjoyed, a wonderful restaurant, an outdoor park with swings and slides which again my children loved, a human size chess table, a pool table & sauna, restaurant and conveniently about a 5 minute walk to the beach. The rooms were spacious and very comfortable. The bathrooms were beutiful and not the typical Greek style. It made me feel as if I were home. The employees were very helpfull and always had a smile. The Owners are very hands on and seemed like they never left the facilities. All in all it was an extremely pleasent experience and would highly recommend staying there if visiting this island."

not as represented

"Not as represented on the web. The designer of this web site deserves a pat on the back. Very misleading. Very far from the beach and our "superior room" faced a garage work area and dumpster! We checked in and never unpacked, called a cab and with the driver's help found the Naxos Royal. Much MUCH better at the same price too."

A diffiult hotel to rate!!

"We pre booked Lagos Mare Hotel after researching hotels in Naxos after decising we wanted a little bit of luxury. The hotel website seemed to fit this requisite and seemed a little different from the standard greek island style hotel.

The hotel itself is new, and it is different , its design is more along an international chain hotel style but not quite getting it correct. The rooms are clean and have very comfortable beds but are relatively bland in design. The bathrooms are modern, fully tiled with a decent sized showere with a glass door. All rooms except a few suites face on to other hotels or buildings across a very narrow street making it difficult to open the curtains in your room and making it unpleasant to use the very small balconies, and yes you can see the sea just! (side view)

The lay out of the hotel could have been designed and built so much better and made the swimming pool area and bar location more private and appealing.

The staff were friendly and helpful but lacked the professional flair.

They do have available two laptop computers which you can be used in your room to access the internet for no additional cost. This is a great idea although i think having one fixed location for a computer with free access would ensure that all guest can acess the internet as desired rather than depending on availability.

The location is approx 5 -10 minutes away from the beach and restruant area and you need to walk downa busy typical crazy greek raod to get there.

Overall the hotel is difficult to rate, this relates to the cost> If you ignore the cost issue then yes the hotel was lovely but when comparing to the cost factor it becomes not so favourable and its standards do not fit into the price structure they are charging.

If they were to reduce their pricing structure by about 30 -40% it would be a hotel of choice as it was nice and comfortable but while the prices remain at the current level it remains a very costly hotel with insifficeient "frills" and would not be recommended.

Not worth the money

"We expected a lot more from this hotel after reviewing their web site but felt rather dissapointed with it during our stay. So much so that we tried to find other accomodations while there. It is definitely not worth the rates they charge.

- The rooms are bare and the furnishings give them no character. The room's lighting didn't help, especially in the bathroom.

- A third of the hotel is still under construction.

- They have very small balconies making it impossible to move the chairs or really sit and enjoy ... the lack of view.

- The majority of the rooms do not face the beach at all but another two hotels across a narrow dirt road. The means that you have very little privacy.

- The hotel is on the main road that goes to Agios Prokopios and Agia Anna which gets very busy.

- The hotel has inadequate parking for the number of rooms it has.

- The beach is not a short walk away. If you do want to walk you will have to either take the busy paved road which has no sidewalk or a long dusty dirt road across a salt marsh. It's uphill on the way back. We ended up driving.

- The beach of Agios Prokopios is beautiful but dirty - tons of cigarette butts in the sand. It felt like an ash tray. The hotel does not have it's own section with beach umbrellas and beach chairs that it maintains.

- The bathroom showers are rather small and there is little countertop space next to the sinks. On the plus side there was adequate hot water and water pressure.

- The smallish pools are wedged between the different sections of the hotel leaving you with not a lot of open space. They are shadowed by the buildings themselves ... and the ones across the road which also block the sunset.

- They have DVD players in the rooms but no DVD movies to give/rent you.

- The air conditioning is a split unit that is insufficient for the room meaning that it is constantly running. It was loud even at the low setting and didn't cool the room much either.

- The mini-bar is barely stocked and overpriced but that proved to be a benefit because we ended up buying our own supplies from the super market and had ample space.

- We checked out several rooms because we didn't like the one we initially got and most of them are rather small. The only sitting area is your bed and one chair in front of the desk and mirror.

- We ended up downgrading our room choice to get one that was a little larger (they have a couple) but they still charged us the higher rate.

- Their staff is friendly and mostly helpful but unprofessional and not trained in hotel management.

Even though this is a new hotel it offers nothing new or exciting to the customer. You can find better accomodations at a fraction of the price that what this hotel charges. I do not recommend Lagos Mare.

FANTASTIC BOUTIQUE HOTEL

"We have just returned from 10 days at Lagos Mare Hotel. The hotel is really fantastic and the service magnificent.

We stayed in a standard room with quite luxurious facilities for a hotel in Naxos (LCD TV, hydromassage jet, really anatomic matress).

The hotel is about 5 min walking from the best beach all over naxos- called Agios Prokopios.

We loved the professional and personal style of its personnel who made us feel like our homes.

We tried their Sauna and Hamam but the most pleasant for us were the massage treatment that the physiotheraupist of Lagos Mare offers. Try that for sure....

Overall iwould say that this is the best hotel all over Naxos as i visit Naxos the last 6 years very frequently.

I forgot something else.....you will thoroughly enjoy their 2 swimming pools which are very clean.

Only one word....Fantastic!!!!
