New Dungeon Ghyll Hotel

Turned up at the NDG on spec having decided on the Langdales as our destination. The overall look of the Hotel was great and the reception from the staff was welcoming but after paying £114 for a Delux box, we were left abit dissapointed, Double aspect room but unfortunately all you could see was a giant PineTree from both windows instead of the Langdale Fells and Valley (Room 5). What an amazing stay!! It was our family's first visit to the Lake District so we were very much in the dark about the area. Oh what a find, scenery is just stunning, hotel wonderful. Was immediately made to feel welcome at the hotel and we were shown to our family room which was on the top floor. I left after one night instead of my reservation of two. They were more interested in making me pay for the night that I was not there (they had so many callers.) When I arrived I had to go fnd the bartender to get my room. The bar food that night was self service. My room was a blast furnace and you could not open the window more than 4 inches but that was enough room to let in all the fly's and the fly's were there because of the animals out front. My girlfriend and I stayed here for a couple of nights after a very hard working conference in Austria. What a wonderful place to use as a base to introduce my American girlfriend to the Lake District. The weather, as usual, was changeable but we had a very pleasant stay in this hotel. The staff are very friendly and incredibly hard working, the restaurant food is excellent - we didn't get to try the bar meals. One tiny gripe - the room was very small. But the view more than made up for it.

Have stayed here several times in the last few years and have always found it excellent. Though an old building it is very warm and cosy, even in mid-winter, and is a welcoming place to relax at the end of a day's walking. Friendly staff, great food and a wonderful location in Great Langdale as well. Their 5 day mid-week packages (Sunday to Friday) are especially good value.

We stayed here for a long weekend in March 2006. The hotel is an interesting Victorian mansion,set in a superb location . The food was always excellent,whether at breakfast, dinner or lunch. We thought the staff were clearly more service oriented than is the norm in the Lake District. The owners are very friendly, and consistently helpful. We had problems with our car in the snow, and were astonished to be accompanied down the road by 4 members of staff, armed with shovels, for the best part of an hour! - despite the hotel being full.... more

We stayed at the hotel over the Christmas period 2005. Our room was a large twin bedded family room - so plenty of room for myself and my wife! The TV was a little on the small side though! Bedroom was clean and tidy. The food was outstanding and the service friendly and attentive. Nothing was too much trouble. The views and walks from the hotel on a frosty Christmas morning were memorable. If you like peace and quiet, good food and service along with views and walks to die for, this is the place for you.

I stayed here for one night end of September. The room was comfortable, shower room had a very good shower. The view from the room was so lovely, I opened the window for the night and went to sleep to the sound of the stream running close by and the sheep in the fields. The evening meal was good and the cooked breakfast excellent. My only grumble is that the television in the room was so loud I could hear it word for word, very annoying! good place if you like to walk the fells, can get up on the fells straight from the hotel. our bathroom roof also leaked as the guests in the room below hadnt closed the shower door properly.

I stayed at the New Dungeon Ghyll after a day's walking in the rain in the Langdales. My room was reasonable although it looked a little in need of refurbishment. I had an evening meal which was much welcomed and satisfying, though not as high quality as some places I have stayed in the Lakes. I went, exhausted from the day to my room and laid on the bed dozing and half watching TV.
