Sonnenburg

We were here with nearly 100 others as part of a conference (although families were included). We were part of the organising team and the Hoch family and their excellent staff could not have been more helpful in their suggestions for activites and helping the conference run smoothly. The food and wine were excellent and the staff were extremely tolerant of us chatting at our tables when I am sure they were longing to clear up (although they did not show it.). The Sonnenburg is consistent and good for the most part. Certainly a safe bet for a ski vacation with kids. This year the addition of a number of new rooms has made things less smooth than in previous years. For 2 days the family breakfast had a 20 min wait for table access. The resources felt stretched. The team is a bit more under stress. Internet access is free but can be patchy in the rooms. The pool could be a touch warmer. However, the team is there to help. The Sonnenburg made our stay in this magical setting absolutely perfect. Everyone at the hotel was friendly, accommodating, and dedicated to seeing that our stay was a happy and comfortable one. From the on-site ski rental and ticket purchase to the warm boot room just steps from the slopes, convenience was paramount. No more schlepping skis in and out of cars and up and down mountains! Everybody knows you already when you arrive at the Sonnenburg. Not only. Everybody tries hard in every occasion to make you feel comfortable. They do achieve to create a familiar atmosphere, delivering great service with unpretentious style. Sharing opinions with other guests at the hotel (something which is fostered by the hotel environment), we concluded that Sonnenburg blends the warmth of the latin spirit with the efficiency of the Germanic culture. Here everything works. Nicely. We plan to go back every year.

The Hoch family takes such great care to accommodate each and every one of their guests.... We have been staying at the Sonnenburg hotel in Oberlech for the past four years and couldn't be happier... The service is great - the food is delicious (improves every year) and they cater to all of a family's needs.... We come back year after year, not because its the MOST luxurious hotel in the world, but because we are treated so well and its such a lovely and warm inviting atmosphere. We'll be back again and again!

This hotel is run by the 'Family Hoch'. It is very well situated on the slopes and is a 'Ski in and Ski out' so no walking in heavy boots. The ski shop is in the hotel. The conference facilities are new and are excellent with modern projection facilities and a great view of the mountains if the speaker is dull!. The front desk was impressive in managing the booking and transfers. The food was excellent and the prices competitive. The spa was exactly right to recover from a hard day on the slopes.

Having been to Hotel Sonnenburg for many years during Eastern, it is very disappointing to see how the hotel has been run down during the last years: Since Gregor Hoch, the son of the owners, is managing the hotel, the standard of the hotel went worse and worse: no investments into rooms, interior and qualified staff, while the prices have been increased up to 15% from one year to another. My family and I have stayed at the Hotel Sonnenburg twice, and we are returning in January 2009. If you are looking for an Alpine-style hotel with luxury, I highly recommend this family-owned hotel. The entire property is extremely clean and modern (while still keeping with the Austrian mountain motif). Suites are well sized (but not in comparison to American resort suites), and nearly all rooms have amazing views of the surrounding Alps. it's a great hotel in a first-class skiing area. you get there by cablecar which connects to the hotels via an underground tunnel system. that means, that there are absolutely no cars in the village and the skiing starts directly in front of the hotel. sonnenburg is run by an extremely friendly and hospitable young couple, got a great sunny terrace (the panorama is a sight to behold), a ceative barman and very good cousine (check the "kaiserschmarn"). the whole skiing ressort seems to be rather snow-reliable and is organized very... more

We stayed here this year for the second time after an 18 month gap. What a difference those 18 months made! The hotel is now run by Gregor Hoch, who has taken over from his father, and his wife, and a hotel that once prided itself on personal service and attention to detail has slipped badly donwhill- unfriendly and slapdash staff, poor levels of personal service, adequate but unexciting food, and tired rooms are now the order of the day.
