Kapok Hotel

Just stayed at the Kapok for a 5 day business trip, it's ok but at about £100 per night in my opinion over priced. The rooms are basic but clean, pool and gym poor, internet access good but expensive, food, location ok, some staff really friendly and helpful while others not so so basically an acceptable but pricey business hotel, would recommend it over the Hilton and Crowne Plaza but Marriot is way better.

Kapok is an older hotel, but pretty well maintained (much better maintained than the Crowne Plaza, similar quality to Hilton). It's a nice location, short walking distance to Queen's Park Savannah, a decent shopping center (bank, bookshop, pharmacy, fast food), and the colonial mansions. Excellent restaurants within 15-20 minute walk (Apsara Indian, Tamnak Thai, and Battimamzelle - some of the best food on offer in POS). This is one of the older hotels in Port-of-Spain, located in a pleasant section of Port-of-Spain, adjacent to a large park and approximately 10 minutes (in good traffic -- 30 minutes in heavy traffic) from the commercial center of the city. Taxis are readily available and there is an upscale shopping plaza within a 5-minute walk from the hotel. I stayed at the Kapok for 5 nights in early June; my first impression based on the lobby was very favourable, but the staff at reception were rather unfriendly. On the way up to my room, I was discouraged by the elevator work left in the midst of construction and hallways that could use some sprucing up. I recently stayed there for 5 nights on business. The hotel is very clean, comfortable, with decent size rooms. Do not be too discouraged by the front desk staff, as they are not the most friendly. The hotel is located on the north end of Savannah Park, in the St. Clair district. The location is ideal, as it is away from the busy downtown, yet close enough by foot to explore. This is one of the better choices in Port-of-Spain. Unfortunately, that's not saying much. The Chinese restaurant up top is good and pleasant. Rooms vary from recently refurbished to old and tired with mold and cracked paint. Many of the air conditioners are way, way past their prime..not a good thing in hot, humid weather. The hotel now advertises wireless in some rooms. Not true. None in any rooms, only in the lobby and the first-floor lounge, according to the front desk and the manager. I stayed at the Kapok hotel for my 1st year wedding anniversary and it was great. Despite the other reviews that the staff did not treat Trini well I must say that is not true.We were treaded well the check in and check out was excellent the service was excellent.The hotel was clean,the restaurant was nice everything was perfect.My husband and I had a wonderfull time.I will recomend this hotel and I will go again.

The accommodations at Kapok was ok. The location adequate. Summer 2004, I came to Trinidad to attend the Haitian Conference at UWI. Accompanying me was my foreign-born husband and brother -in law. We were estatic to be there together. All went well at the hotel until check out, when things went awry about the rate of payment. We stayed at the Kapok hotel over Cricket weekend and I must say that the rooms are superior and more modern than e.g. the Hilton. Housekeeping is excellent and F&B staff and facilities are good. Location is the key here, since you are very central. The only downfall is the front desk and management who are unable to respond politely or pass on messages of high importance and I am not even commenting on their check in procedures. Apart from that, a comfortable city hotel with good ambiente.

I have been there 3 times because it is the best? of the central hotels and seems very posh on the surface but the room interiors and staff competency etc... does not bear close scrutiny. We had a great few times by lowering our expectations and were occasionally surprised, pleasantly.
