OK Hotel, Magnificent Views
Our stay this time was not as nice as in 2004. In 2004 there were only a few guests there, and it was very quiet and peaceful. Also, our room was large and had a private balcony. This time there were many more guests, and it was quite noisy, inside and out. The walls are paper thin, and you can hear other guests talking, walking around, etc., all night long. We had a corner room (#325) and the views were awesome, but the room is starting to need new carpet and curtains. The bathroom was roomy, with good water pressure and a... more
As long as your expectations are realistic, stay here!
We had read all the reviews on Tripadvisor before booking, and therefore, we were not at all disappointed. We stayed for four nights. Sure, the rooms aren't five star, but they aren't horrible in any way. The pool is magnificent, and it's a great place for an afternoon siesta. The views make it all worthwhile. My husband and I twice brought our own bottle of wine out on the hotel's main balcony for a nightcap, and we thoroughly enjoyed the view. We almost always took a cab to and from town (anywhere from 8-11 euro), so factor... more
Good View - Bad Hotel!
I must agree with the last reviewer of this hotel i.e. 5-star views, 2-star rooms and 1-star service. The only reason for going to this hotel is for the views of San Sebastian – which are fantastic. However, the hotel itself should never be classed as a 4-star property. It has been well and truly ‘mercured’ We spent a long weekend in Bilbao and had one night in San Sebastian. After driving all day, we wanted to relax and enjoy a leisurely dinner in the hotel’s restaurant which has panoramic views of San Sebastian. <br... more
Falls well below what one would expect of a 4 Star hotel
5 Star views, 2 star rooms & 1 star service. This hotel needs a serious makeover. In general it's shabby & in now way deserving of it's 4 "star" status. The staff on the reception desk are a particular problem. I was travelling with my 2 children & despite booking a triple room @ rack rates was told in a gruff manner that there was no cot available upon check in & had to fight 36 hours later to secure one. It's 12 euro for breakfast btw and the rooms are well below what one has come to expect in any modern 4 star establishment. FYI, it's... more
I wouldn't want to stay anywhere else...
I chose this hotel after a careful search, and still remember how the comment above struck me while I was trying to decide. It was from a review below from 2004, and it captures how I feel about this hotel. As the other reviews state, the hotel was impeccable, the staff professional, helpful, friendly at all times. I traveled with my daughter to celebrate her college graduation, and we were not at all prepared for the breathtaking beauty of this site. It was the most expensive hotel we stayed at during our trip, but it was worth... more
Breathtaking views and comfortable rooms
Breathtaking views are not the only reason to stay at this hotel. The comfort of the spacious rooms and the friendly service are equally commendable! The breakfast buffet is also quite good, and one has beautiful views of the bay in the morning sun. A quick taxi ride into the "Parte Vieja" takes one to the tapas bars and pedestrian streets of San Sebastian in the evenings. The price was very reasonable (160 eur) for this 4-star hotel.
Romantic Night in San Sebastian
We stayed for a romantic getaway, and enjoyed a corner room with views of both the ocean and the bay. Absolutely amazing! We walked down the hill into town (took about 45 minutes with lots of stops to admire the view) and enjoyed our day walking along the promenades and through the old city taking in some sangria and tapas. At the end of our day we took the lift (funicular) back up to the top. It was unforgettable, and we look forward to going again.
Great Hotel, Impossible to get to town from
The hotel itself was fine altough the restaurant was expensive so I never ate there, however it is very hard to get to town from the hotel. If you want to spend time in San Sebastian I highly reccomend getting a hotel in town because to go from the center of town to the hotel requires at least 15 mins and about 10 Euro by cab, more if you go by bus or fuencarrel.
Loved the Mercure!
I spent two nights in October 2004 at the Mercure and just loved it. My room had a balcony overlooking the bay and the city and it was breathtaking day or night. The hotel sits at the highest point in San Sebastian and the lobby has floor to ceiling windows looking out over the ocean. Originally, I had wanted to find a hotel in the Old Quarter, where I knew I would spend a lot of time. But, I'm so glad I ended up here. It is a little more inconvenient to get to the city, but you can take the funicular down to the bay and the walk along... more
Phenomenal Views
Phenomenal views over San Sebastian. There is an amusement park right next to the hotel which could be noisy (it was closed when we were there). Rooms are fine (not much character) but we had a balcony overlooking the city. A little isolated if you don't have a car (although there is a funicular up from the beach)
