Barcelo Costa Vasca

We stayed for 2 nights at week end in March and were not expecting anything too wonderful and were not disappointed. The hotel is a little further than they say from the centre and being mid March it was either a chilly 25 min walk or a 8 euro taxi ride. The rooms are very dated but spacious enough and the bathroom plumbing is straight from the 1960's. The reception, bar and restaurant areas are clean and give the appearance of a 4 star hotel, however, the bedrooms have been 'touched up' and not modernised to a current 4 star standard, but they were clean and acceptable. There was major work going on inside the hotel and the lifts were out of order, guests could use the staff lifts which were grotty. The room service was poor but the reception staff was helpful. This is a really nice hotel, clean, good facilities, friendly staff. It is situated a little out of the centre of San Sebastian (25 mins walk along the Playa de la Concha) but near to a nice beach Playa Ondaretta and other attractions. The rooms are clean and spacious with a nice balcony. The hotel has a good restaurant which is a little pricey but good quality. It also has a bar area with tapas and drinks. Difficult to get to if arriving by train. Best advice is to take a taxi or catch the bus near the tourist office (15min walk from train station) which actually stops right outside the front door. Looks terrible from the outside but foyer is completely renovated and rooms are very nice - what you would expect from a 4star hotel! Huge bathrooms and bedrooms, with balcony outside to catch the sea breeze. Breakfast was too expensive for us so cant comment. For what we paid, the service was poor to say the least. 1. Room service was rubbish, we werent able to get a response let alone make an order 2. No lift access (renovations) despite being on the 6th floor 3. Hardly anyone in the hotel spoke english 4. Other facilities such as pool and tennis court was in a messy state 5. Firstly, this could not possibly be a 4 star hotel. There are no facilities- the pool and tennis court were grotty and dirty and weren't even open despite the very warm May weather. The rooms were very dated and the hotel itself resembled the set of The Shining. The drilling and noise of the refurbishment was constant and you could hear clearly the gusets in the next room anyhow. First of all, San Sebastian in January can be VERY rainy. We stayed 4 nights at the Barcelo Costa Vasca and it was a lousy hotel. The good things about it is the breakfast which is excellent, and the breakfast staff is great. The receptionist are also quite helpful but the hardly speak English. The hotel is noisy, you can actually hear whats on your neighbours tv, or wheither they are showering or flushing down. We took advantage of the barcelo web site special rate of 60 euro, and were satisfied with what we got for that price. The a/c worked, and the rooms were quiet, even though we were on the first floor. The bathroom was dated, but everything worked and it was clean. The breakfast was enough and had a variety that could satisfy almost anyone. The paid uncovered parking was in front of the hotel. Taxis were availble in 5 minutes, after requesting them to the front desk.

We stayed for 2 nights but ending up paying a whopping 231 Euro but admittedly the whole of San Sebastian was booked up during August. For this money we were expecting excellent service, but found the staff quite snotty, and the rooms dated.

The Costa Vasca is a red brick 9 story hotel with a large lobby with a bar, lseating area and ground floor cafe. The building seems to be about 25 years old but is in good repair. Rooms on the front sport small balconies, those to the rear do not. Most rooms are twins and the beds can be pushed together to form a large queen. Bathrooms are well equipped and contain the usual hairdryer and supply of toiletries.
