Sublime luxury
Described by most guide books as the 'Grand Dame' of Las Palamas hotels, the hotel has enjoyed it's time at the top of the tree. It still has to be the choice for most as the no. 1 hotel in the area, the public areas, expecially the bar, ooze style and history. The rooms though are just starting to look a little tired. The types to stay here include well healed locals, business folk and flight crew. Only had breakfast here - it was okay-ish, but for a 5 star place an entirely self-service breakfast is unacceptable. You will have to... more
Luxury and style for great value
I spent five nigths in this beautiful hotel full of character and style. There is no doubt why His Majesty Juan Carlos stays at this hotel in Gran Canaria. The buildig is wonderful, in the middle of a parkin the centre of Las Palmas. The style is colonial, is in contrast to many faceless, "just the same" style hotels. The hotel has a outdoor pool, and a fantastic spa center with indoor pool, jacissi and a full equipped large gym. You can make your reservation via the website of the hotel. The price is absoluteley reasonable for the feeling,... more
Great colonial hotel
We stayed at the hotel Santa Catalina in January 2007. It is a wonderful old colonial style hotel, truly a 5* experience. Top service, wonderful buffet breakfast. When we wanted to consider another room when we arrived (the balcony had a large flash light to lighten up the front of the building, and there was no furniture at the balcony), we were given the keys to another room immediately. The new room was larger, but had a smaller balcony. We decided to stay in the first room after all. The light went down at midnight, and when we asked for... more
could be a lot better
We stayed here two nights prior to a cruise in November. When we arrived we were shown to a noisy room over the front entrance and not the garden view room we had ordered. Once this was sorted out the room was OK but nothing special. We had a balcony BUT there was no furniture of any sort so we could not use it. The public areas were poor with all the mirrors in urgent need of a clean. Breakfast was poor with awful hot food and an average self help fruit and cereal bar. The bar by the front door was pleasant and did reasonable snack food.... more
Great hotel, plenty of character
I think the last two reviews have said it all, a great hotel with plenty of character. We had a second floor room overlooking the front of the hotel and were more than happy with it - everything we expected and some. Breakfasts are good, swimming pool with towels/loungers provided. It may not be near the beaches but we spotted a notice on the reception desk saying that the hotel ran a free bus service to Canteras beach, you can't say fairer than that. If you're more into sightseeing than sunbathing then this is the hotel - close enough to... more
Superb Service - What a bargain!
My husband and I stayed for 1 week. Rather like the previous reviewer we were rather nervous because of other reviews. However, our fears quickly disappeard. We agree that the bedrooms are perhaps not up to the latest Northern European minimalist design - however, they were of a very good size and the little lobby and spacious bathroom all worked. The best rooms are at the front overlooking the gardens and most have balconies. Breakfast was excellent. The pool area and pool restaurant were extremely pleasant. Clean towels and... more
Super hotel
Was hesitant about this hotel having read one or two less positive reviews. This hotel is an old colonial style hotel, steeped in history. Our large well-furnished room on the fourth floor had a marble floor and plenty of space. Certainly the bathroom could be modernised, but it was clean, had good facilities- bath with a powerful shower, bidet, nice sink area. The service in the hotel was friendly. The breakfasts were out of this world. There was cava, smoked salmon, lots of fruit, a selection of hams and cheese, eggs, rashers and many... more
Old style comfort
Very comfortable, slightly faded old style luxury hotel. Very good service, decent food, but bedrooms/bathrooms show their age and could do with an update. Original very pleasant bar seems to have disappeared when they created the casino - pity, I always felt it was one of the great old colonial hotel bars!
Good but not THAT good
First of all sorry for my English (I'm Spanish)! I totally agree with the other reviewer. This is not a bad hotel, in fact it's quite nice, but then when I went there it was on a special offer -very very cheap, so the quality/price rate was good, but had I paid the normal rate I would have been VERY disappointed. The hotel should have 3 stars not five. As it is an historic hotel (lots of celebrities have stayed there) it has charm and the entrance has been redecorated recently but the rooms are a little weary and look old. Its "vintage"... more
Not Sure About Five Stars
Hardly 5* service. We were greeted by an officious, unfriendly man on reception who could not find our booking because of a spelling mistake - and it was our fault - apparently! No apology when the error was pointed out and no offer of any assistance to take our bags to the first floor room with an appalling view (in fact no view apart from an unattractive internal roof). We asked to make a reservation for dinner and were told this was unnecessary! Hardly surprising as the restaurant was predominantly empty on a night when the hotel was fully... more
