Nice rooms, shame about the bin lorry!
Right, let's start with the positives. What a fantastic location! My partner booked us in for the night of the 11th of March to get me over the big four-o in style. We were both very impressed with the room (nice four poster) and the view, looking out onto the minster. We also had a bottle of bubbly, some chocolates and strawberries in the room. The staff were friendly, not sure how helpful as I used to live in York so needed no information from them. As I say the room couldn't be faulted, full of 'olde worlde' charm and ambiance. <br... more
lovely hotel
We stayed at the guy fawkes hotel in Feb 06, Thurs - Sun. Good welcome, very friendly and helpful staff. Hotel is right next to the Minster, about 5 mins taxi/10 min walk to train station. Everything within walking distance. Room are lovely, (we stayed in room 8 - Mary Queen of scots room)which had wonderful views over the minster; there was noise from the street at night, but this is only to be expected in a City Centre at a weekend. Good breakfasts, veggies catered for, would certainly return.
Noisy Room
Stayed in the room off the courtyard which was next to the kitchen (12). The kitchen fan made the noise in the bedroom intolerable, unable to relax read or nap. Informed staff and told it would go off at 9.30 pm ! - no alternative room offered. Had to go for a walk. The room was floodlit all night from the courtyard - no curtains on the glass door. All night could hear the bathroom fan in the room above. Kitchen fan roared into life again at 7.40 am Sunday morning!!! No choice but to get up, pack, have breakfast and leave. Breakfast room... more
Recent trip to York
On the basis of previous reviews of the Guy Fawkes Hotel we spent three nights (mid-week) at the hotel with our 12 year old son in the first week of November. We had the King James room at the front of the hotel with spectacular views of the Minster - our son slept on a very comfortable double sofa bed and we had a large four-poster. The hotel was quite quiet as our son had his half-term holiday the week after most schools. The staff were very friendly and helpful, especially on the last morning. We had arranged a guided tour of the... more
Atmospheric hideaway
Beautiful setting for this small hotel, close to Minster, amenities and shops. The staff, although all young, could not have been more helpful. We had 2 small rooms on the back which were clean and adequate for our stay, although the mattress was not as comfortable as one would have hoped. Breakfast as good as any 4* Lovely atmosphere and area but not the place to stay if you are keen on large, modern, characterless, souless hotels - this is York at its best.
So glad I found this hotel
My husband and I stayed at the Guy Fawkes hotel at the end of October, after reading reviews in this site and I'm glad we did. The hotel was brilliant, with a modern feel in the main reception/restaurant area, yet a lovely traditional atmosphere in the room. We booked the 'large four poster room' which is in Guy Fawkes cottage at the rear of the hotel and it certainly lived up to its name. The room was clean and well decorated, and the bathroom was also huge, with a large, roll top bath and separate power shower. The staff were also... more
very good
The location of this hotel is great, right in the centre of York. The parking is a short walk away and is in individual garages (book parking in advance if you need it as there are only a few). We stayed in room 8 (£100 per night) which although small was furnished interestingly, had a good four poster bed, and a wonderful view of the Minster from the window. The bathroom was small and functional but clean. We received a warm welcome when we arrived and the very helpful staff also helped us carry our many shopping bags to our car when... more
Nice rooms, but some problems
The rooms in this hotel are lovely and have been newly refurbished. The bathroom was small and only had a shower. The location is brilliant and is literally next to/opposite the Minster. We did encounter some problems: We were only given half a little bottle of shampoo (presumably half used by a previous occupant!); there was no shower gel in the dispenser; no hairdryer in the room and I had to ask twice before borrowing one; and finally the vegetarian breakfast was a joke as I was given a single tomato, some over-boiled beans and... more
Location, Location, Location
We stayed in room 8, which was furnished tastefully. Dark panelled walls, four poster bed, a Celtic theme interlinking with the room's reference to Mary, Queen of Scot's. I was expecting the room to border on tacky, catering for those tourists who want to say "gee, isn't it so cute?" at anything reminiscent of times pre-1950. Thankfully, the decor was never tacky, but simply, elegant. The bathroom was a bit of a dissappointment, however. It was very small and I felt that a room as grand as this could have done with a bathroom that... more
