Palm Beach in Maspalomas is nice enough hotel. Lots of rooms with decent to good views, the pool area is large and clean, and the service was generally helpful. Was impressed they didn't give us a hard time about misunderstanding on a charge and they removed it without... more

Aug 2010, ready to retire to the beach

This is a wonderful hotel, though I can see why the reviewers seem to contradict each other. The building was designed in one style and then added to and then updated in a modernist style. But the service style is still consistently the old style European way - understated,... more

Don’t believe the hype. The hotel is not a design temple, just a nice try to hide the bad architectural mistakes done in the past. If Frankenstein would design a hotel, the palm beach would be it. If you are under 60 don’t go there in October. We were suffering big... more

Lovely vacation
Palm Beach in Maspalomas is a wonderful design hotel. We enjoyed our stay there. It is perfectly located, within the walking distance to various restaurants, souvenir shops and shopping area (for some serious shopping). Rooms are reasonably spacious, well equiped, very modern and airy. Nice view when you ask for a room with a view. Food absolutely delicious, fantastic breakfast incl. Champagne, good lunch and buffet dinner and cca 3 times a week served dinner, which is a fancy occasion. Once you choose this hotel (we stayed there twice), you have to pack some fancy dress. Hotel is very popular among German tourists, age 50up, so when you go with kids, it is unique...But there is a nice playgroung, tennis court, nice swimming pool, relaxing area etc. No beach, but it is just across the street. Perfect.
very relaxing
Just returned from a weeks stay at the hotel. The weather was excellent although apparently just before our arrival it was not great and on the day we left it became overcast. Hotel is German owned and most of the guests are from Germany. The guests tended to be quite elderly and as such the atmosphere can be quite formal with guests dressing in shirt and jackets and the ladies in formal evening wear. Food: There is an arrangement where you eat in the Hotel restaurant on certain days and then outside on a buffet/barbecue style arrangement. There are two sittings, 6.30pm and 8.30pm. In the restaurant the menu is set with five courses with some selections across the starters and main and a buffet selection for desert. The menu in the restaurant is relatively specialist gourmet. The buffet arrangement outside provides a far wider choice through fish, meats, salads etc. Breakfasts are on a buffet arrangement and again there is a wide choice from continental style cheeses, cold meets, croissants and breads to cereals to grilled and fried breakfasts. There is also another restaurant within the hotel (Orangerie) - did not use this. For midday meals there is a poolside bar and eatery serving limited Tapas selection, standard toasteed sandwiches and crepes with various fillings aswell as ice cream deserts, coffees and ofcourse alcohol. Overall the food is very good, with buffet arrangements it can be a bit difficult regards finding yourself a table and also can be issues re numbers of guests, potential for some queing, this is allieviated if the staff are observant and attentive, which is not always the case and dependes also on the expectations of other guests who may be more needy than others. I think the trick is to identify a couple of members of staff and try and always use them, tipping early on (Vegas style) may prove fruitful in ensuring a greater degree of service in relation to this area certainly in relation to the outside buffets. Rooms: There are, I think 3 main categories of room. The hotel is on 7 floors, there are some basement rooms and some suites. We stayed on the 2nd floor on this occasion with a view over the Gardens at rear of hotel. There are sea view rooms facing out to the front of the hotel. Bathroom was good, walk in shower, very clean. Limited wardrobe space, but in main room was very good, beds comfortable. Situation: Hotel faces out to Maspolomas Sand dunes and front and at rear to a large swimming pool, very well maintained gardens and a thalassotherpy pool. the sand dunes and beach are a down a small footpath to the boardwalk area that runs alongside the Beach, so is very close. Ammenities: There is a wellness centre, great sauna, sanarium and shower spa areas. The thalassotherapy pool is great and there is a wellness treatment centre within the grounds offering ranges of massages and beauty treatments at additional cost. There is water arobics and tai chi offgered to guests free of charge on a monday to friday basis. There is one tennis court, a small fitness area, running machine, rower, fixed bike, and a weight training machine. General view: The hotel is five star and relatively expensive, we paid about £1000 per person for a week half board. It was the case that many of the guests there tended to be more elderly (50 plus) the atmosphere could appear very formal as a result, many of the guests having been going to the hotel for years and I suspect many know the owner personally. It is more a venue for older couples, not children although there are some facilities (a playground area). The evening entertainment is not good and can be quite subdued. However if it is relaxation that you want this Hotel is perfect and if the weather is good and you enjoy sunbathing, some swimming, gentle exercise, good food then it is worth going.
Very comfortable hotel
We were after a relaxing two week break in a good hotel, with great food and service and in a good location. The Hotel Palm Beach delivers on all these points with ease. After booking the hotel two weeks before departure, we were somewhat apprehensive after reading some of the reviews on here and I personally feel after coming back that some of the comments are a little unfair. British travel agents do not offer the same resort service at this hotel purely because it is German owned and run and therefore geared to the German market. Once you accept this fact then you will have a wonderful time and relax into what the hotel and location can offer. Our room was on the second floor and was a decent size and had a great view of the pool area. The bed was a large king-size and was very comfortable indeed. The reception area is bright and offers free wi-fi access for those who need to use it, free fruit for guests at most of the tables and free welcome champagne on arrival. The pool areas are great. The larger pool is for families with children and is colder and deeper than the more private spa type pool. However the smaller pool area feels more intimate and personal and the pool has various spa facilities which you can take advantage of for free. Children under 16 are not allowed into this pool and on the odd occasion in the two weeks we were there when children did venture in, the Pool Service staff gently asked them to leave and herded them back to the main pool! This area is also where water aerobics takes place every week day from about 12:45. It's a welcome break from the usual quiet surroundings. Also available at the hotel is the extensive Spa and Wellness centre and also a nudist area behind closed gates for any of you who are brave enough! There is also quite a good gym at the pool and a tennis court with a trainer offering you lessons if you would like them. You can also take advantage of free Thai Chi and Yoga every weekday if you feel like it. There is also a table tennis table, huge chess board and a couple of other games you can play in the shaded grounds, which are also meticulously maintained. The food - breakfast was exceptional with a lot of choice which we did not get tired of in two weeks. Everything you could think of was there on offer. We stayed on a half board basis and the evening food did not disappoint either. You eat in the restaurant four days out of seven and the remaining three you have on the terrace outside at the hotel's BBQ night. These were our favourite nights. Once again the food was very good with a lot of choice and I think we've come away from the holiday weighing a lot more than we did when we went! The only slight gripes we had about our stay are the fact that the restaurant seems a little too formal considering the relaxed atmosphere at all other times. Mind you, the Europeans appear to like dressing up for the occasion and this is probably why but once you are over the initial "am I smart enough" thoughts, you notice that some of the other guests are wearing jeans and sandals etc and there is no pressure from anyone to dress up at all so don't be alarmed by this. One word of warning though, even on BBQ night, men are not allowed to wear shorts, even if they are tailored. You must wear long trousers for dinner. The bar area also seems to have quite strange lighting which did not lend itself to a relaxing atmosphere in our opinion. The entertainment was also not to our taste at all but then again you can skip that by having a nightcap at the pool bar which is much more pleasant. The only other problem we encountered was when we tried to hire a car and the agency representative did not speak any English. After much gesticulating and nodding we seemed to get there in the end and although seemed annoying at the time, we can now look back at the experience and laugh. The concierge and other staff are on the whole are very good and we had no problem at all. The hotel is excellently located. It is just a two minute walk from the extensive beach at Maspalomas and also only a ten minute walk from the many shops and other restaurants on the Meloneras strip. It will only cost you €5 if you want to get a taxi in to the centre of Playa del Ingles. Generally this is an excellent hotel and if were looking to go back to Gran Canaria, we would consider staying here again with a doubt.
Great food!
Just returned from a week's holiday staying at this lovely hotel. The restaurant facilities are excellent , I usually dine out every evening, but used the restaurant the first evening and was so impressed that didn't bother trying to find any decent restaurants within the resort. Sunbeds with padded mattresses are really comfortable(which I know you would expect in a five star hotel). If you want to get away from the miserable weather in England, enjoy the sun and need to recharge your batteries then I would strongly recommend this hotel. Didn't rate the evening entertainment but some of the other holidaymakers seemed to enjoy it!
Excellent, relaxing Holiday
My husband and I have just returned from a 2 week stay at the Palm Beach Hotel and enjoyed every minute of it. We had a brown themed room - so easy on the eye and kept spotlessly clean throughout the holiday. Our room was on the first floor although numbered as 315 and we had a view over to the beach which was lovely. Normally we go on our summer hols when it is quieter in September, so we were a bit nervous about how many children there would be and families. We are in our late 20's so wanted just to chill in peace. In the end there were lots of children - but as part of large European families they were fine and kept mostly to the main pool (the other pool we spent a couple of hours by each day is adult only but the kids do start making their way over later in the day!) - lots of German, Spanish and French families. Hotel was busy - but only on our last couple of days did we notice it. As the beach is literally a couple of minutes over form the hotel we spent most days their. It is a public beach and busy - but we always found a lovely spot. The sand dunes are beautiful, the water cool and refreshing. The food at the hotel is fantastic- we were half board and highly recommend it. The breakfast buffet, as several people have already said, is fantastic - with tons of choice. Similarly the evening BBQ buffet which takes place 5 evenings a week is fab - especially the 1 night a week that they had Octopus and King prawns - we eat very well all holiday. I loved the seafood and salads and my husband loved all of the meat! The only criticism I would have is that on the evenings that weren't the BBQ we eat in the restaurant and had 4 course meals - but as all the hotel were eating there it made it a very chaotic atmosphere and not at all like a gourmet restaurant would be. We therefore didn't enjoy these evenings as much - however the food was still good. As an alternative we wandered up the road to the lovely stretch of restaurants and bars in Melenoras and eat there. On the wine front it is expensive and frustratingly althoguh there is a reasonably priced house Rose there isn't the equivalent in red or white. I could go on - but all in all we loved it and although we were ready to come home it was a very restful, enjoyable hotel and holiday. We would highly recommend it.
Great hotel! Good service!
Stayed 6 nights in this hotel and found the stay very relaxing and pleasant. The thing I like most is the service, you know, the kind that yoy just feel but not seen. I have stayed in may 5 stars hotels in Asia, which are really well known for their services, and believe me, I never though an European five star resort hotel has this quality of service. The food was great, even the buffet they serve 2 evenings a week, is of good quality, unlike the other buffets you eat in a resort. The room was modern and had a lovely poolview. And they do cleaning twice a day. It is pleasant to have a tower change during the day, expecially after you return from the beach nad have a bath, then go back to the pool again and come back for another bath. The swimming pools are not very big, but since it was not a peak season, it was OK. During the peak season it may get crowded. Sundecks and towers were plenty. The food served at the poolsive was good and not expensive, as one would expect to pay in a 5 star hotel. I like everything about this hotel and am thinking about going there again in February, to escape the cold winter. It is a hotel to stay and enjoy. I am sure you can find resorts just as luxurious nearby, but I doubt you can get better service. If it is service, coupled with peacefulness, good food relaxing atmosphere, then this hotel is for you. The onlu thing I found expensive is the SPA - but then, they are never cheap.
The easy "fly and flop"
This hotel delivers exactly what you would expect. We wanted to get away for a few days of sun and rest, no culture, no touring, and so the quality of the hotel was important. Rooms: small but clean and well designed, unfortunately the hotel was very full and so all the junior suites and suites were full on arrival. It would be well worth booking one in advance. Only BBC World TV station in English and no in-room DVDs. It didn't bother us because the weather was gorgeous, if it rains you'll be bored. Food: We went for the half board option because once you leave the hotel its all day breakfasts and pizza around the beach. The breakfast buffet is well above average but I would suggest eating in the Trattoria at night, better food and you get tired with relentless self service in the main restaurant! The Orangerie restaurant (fine dining) was closed already despite the full hotel as it was "off season", we were a little disappointed we weren't told. The wine lists were dull and quite pricey for the rather ordinary selection (only Spanish). Cocktails and spirits were inexpensive but local beer was 7+euro a pint, that's more expensive than the chicest clubs or nightspots in any capital. Staff: Very pleasant in general. Didn't feel a bias against English speaking guests as mentioned in another review. The bar staff at the African Pool bar were a little surly all others were lovely. Guests: Continental Europeans in the main and none the worse for that. The average age was very much older (50's +) which is why people dressed formally for dinner (but there was no pressure to do so if you wanted to be casual). There were many scary looking women with big hair, vulgar jewellery and excessive plastic surgery but this definitely adds to the fun. The huge selction of Speedo thongs at the pool was a little disturbing though! Entertainment: As you'd expect. Standard hotel band with occasional tribute act, usually shockingly bad...... Amenities: Lovely pool areas including one which was adult only (fabulous idea). Good partially outdoor gym. Excellent sauna, spa, thermal pool, plunge pool etc with separate relaxation areas. Daily aqua aerobics and yoga with a very pleasant instructor. Overall, this is an ideal hotel to visit for a few days of pure sun and relaxation. It's a short transfer from the airport and just the essence of a hassel-free break. But if you want sights, culture, and action you're not only in the wrong hotel...you're in the wrong resort. Short break ideal, 2 weeks I'd go mad!
A great improvement on last visit
This hotel is now living up to that of a five star hotel in all areas. This is our second time staying at this hotel. One of the great benefits of the Palm Beach is that not many English people go to the hotel - Playa del Ingles is much more suitable for families and people who are looking for a lively holiday. The food in the Restaurant was excellent and was certainly not "reheated leftovers" - the service was also much improved on two years ago. We will be returning in January for a short break after Christmas. People who want to go to dinner in a pair of shorts should stick to taking their holidays in Bournemouth, Blackpool and Benedorm!
looks good - but the whole place needs to relax a little.............
saw this hotel on Design Hotel ....read a few reviews and decided to try it out. Agree with what most people have written ...it needs to try harder to live up to the Design Hotel inclusion and we really think that they need to relax some of their dress codes. .. on the first evening we ate on the Barbecue evening - and my husband was told in the middle of the terrace that he had to go back to the room to change into long trousers - rather like a naughty boy - even though there were plenty of people dressed in jeans.... some things were a little over the top (rather like the age of the majority of the guests!) That said the food was excellent on the barbecue buffet evenings, but the 4 course set dinner left a little to be desired and it did seem to be a way of using up the leftovers .... Our room had good views but we arrived at 2 in the morning and the night porter told us that we were expected midday ...tired and grumpy we took a room on the first floor even though we had paid for a better room ...then had to change the next day....some of these problems may have been the travel agent and hotel communication but worth bearing in mind! probably not going to visit again... The Locker room was so hot on the day that we changed we needed another shower after the first one as there was no air con in it. I left a piece of clothing at the hotel they have said that if it is found they will post it on to me ...we will wait and see.
Excellent All Round
Stayed at Palm Beach Hotel 21/8-28/8. Amazingly good: Food, friendliness, architecture, room, pools, staff (both German & Spanish), gardens, proximity to the huge sandy beach, Spa/Wellness centre, rooms serviced twice a day, 24hr a/c, relaxed ambience, everything worked, and such attention to detail, no badly behaved children or loud adults - probably as there weren't any Brits! Half board had 4 course dinners 3 nights per week (make an effort to dress smartly in the restaurant - it fits the ambience), and an alfresco buffet/barbeque on the other 3 alternate nights - such huge variety to choose from. On Saturday night it's a 6 course gala dinner (roses given to ladies as they leave). Portions are perfect so you don't feel bloated, just marvel at the creativity and flavours of the dishes. Buffet breakfast (to 11am!) has everything you could possibly want as well - so no need for lunch. Great holiday because of the hotel.
