Shangri-La's Villingili Resort and Spa Maldives

Just returned from our week-long stay at Shangri-La Villingili with very mixed emotions. Everybody who visited the Maldives knows and loves the natural beauty of these small islands. So at this point I want to summarize briefly the pros and cons of Shangri-La Villingili. From the minute we were met at the airport the service was faultless throughout our weeks holiday... some people have mentioned it's quite a hassle doing the internal flight to gan, to us this was brill! the views are incredible it was the beginning of the best experience ever! When we go on holidays maybe we are so happy & excited that we oversee the very small faults like bad pasta or tasteless pancakes that other reviewers felt neccessary to comment on! Stayed here mid Sep for 8 nights in a Water Villa and were very happy with our choice for a first time stay in the Maldives. Although still a very new property (opened mid July) there are very few, if any, signs of this. The facilities and staff all seem as they have been operating for some time and we only encountered very minor problems which were by far outweighed by the many positives during our visit. A luxury resort having something for everyone. Not so typical because of it vastness, the lush forest & the lakes, and the at times not so clear and a little choppy water (maybe the rain or the season or the location. we don't know the Maldives good enough). This was our second trip to the Maldives. In 2006, we stayed at Huvafen Fushi, as part of our honeymoon. Therefore, we had very high expectations, and we left thinking that the shangri-la certainly compares more than favourably with that experience. We visited this outstanding resort in early August. Never have I been made to feel so special as by the team at Villingili, The resort is set up for everyone from those that want to be anonymous to those that want to be kept busy. The acommodation is a dream come true - the bath tub in particular and outside shower! The peaceful surroundings are infectious, The service is exceptional! I would strongly recommend that everyone visits Villingili at least onece in their lifetime as it should be named as one of the 7 wonders of the world!

This hotel is now open and we were some of the first travelers to the island. we had expected some disorganization due to its recent opening however we were pleasantly surprised that we did not experience any major disasters. the staff were a little undertrained but that is to be expected. Someone referred to the resort as a 7 star, it very well may be. We stayed for 9 days in an over the water villa in the Whispering Palms section, there are three groups of over the water villas. The Whispering Palms is probably the best area if you like snorkeling or diving as it is the closest to the House Reef. The room itself is pretty spectacular, very comfortable king size bed facing the water, large stone bathtub, showers inside and out, two vanities, free internet, and walk in closet. My stay was from 9 - 15 July, 2009. A very, very new upmarket resort with luxurious water & beach villas in an island filled with coconut trees & other green vegetation which provided a lovely contrast to the white powdery sand beaches in the 1.5 km long island. An eight-minute speed boat ride is all it takes from Gan airport (ex-British RAF base) to the resort.
