Physically scarred by the traumatic experience!
from VBO
I decided to write this review to ensure other people never make the mistake of staying at this disgusting hotel. The decor was dated (even in my 'upgraded' room) and the hotel was tricky to find due to road closures but these were the least of my worries. After a draughty night's sleep I woke up the next day to see a beatle on the counterpane which I thought was a little odd. A few hours later my neck & forearms were absolutely burning.... with horrific bed bug bites - over 100 bites in total. My neck was bruised by the ferocity of the...

Management response from ManagerHoltHotel
We are very sorry that this lady has suffered from these horrible little creatures, and we have compensated her accordingly. The Hotel's management has spent hundreds of pounds in treatments to totally eradicate them, with the pest control company we employ. To make sure we have no further incidents of this nature, the offending hotel bed has also been thrown out.
Unfortuneately, the guest and the hotel has been unlucky on this occasion, as bed-bugs can be carried from one hotel to the next, even in a guest's luggage. This is not a reflection on the standard of cleanliness of the guest or of the hotel, but a fact of life.
Immediately we became aware of the situation we closed off the room, and it was professionally treated.
We are sincerely sorry it has happened to this lady guest, but this type of incident can happen to any grade of hotel.
Never again

Just returned from a stay at The Holt, we won't be going back, having booked a Superior Room we were put in a standard room, after talking to reception we did get it changed. The superior room was a little larger with a jacuzzi bath, but the button on the bath was broken the bathroom fittings needed replacing, tiles on the floor were cracked. The curtain linings were all torn and wallpaper was peeling, carpet frayed and stained, wardrobe door with broken hinge. To top it all the bar closed at 9.30pm. The food in the restaurant in the evening...

Lets do the time warp again
from beercanbutty
Yes, parts of the building may date back to 1400, but so does many of the fixtures and fittings in the bedrooms. Shower in en suite was awful; tile missing that had been filled with grout, shower head was fixed so, being over 6 foot, i had to be a contortionist to get water on my head. Dated wooly blanket on bed, - everything in need of modernisation. Public lounges and rooms were welcoming, staff were friendly enough. Wireless broadband in reception area but very slow connection.
Tired but Clean
from shreddie1
We stayed one Saturday night with out two children. First impressions are of a very tired hotel with dated furniture and decoration. it has that "B&B smell"! Having said that reception welcomed us warmly. The room (rm.22) was very dated with almost laughably old light and bathroom fittings. To cap it all, we went down to the bar at 1800 to ask for some cold sandwiches for our 5 year old and were told very bluntly to wait 20 minutes. How charming! Matters became worse when we returned back from eating in Woodstock. At 0000hrs a group...

Fawlty Towers, Oxford
from GoonerGirlLondon
Do not visit the Holt Hotel if you want any level of customer service. Our experience started as we checked in when we requested a late check-out; this appeared to be the first time this had ever been requested. We decided to go to the bar for drinks but then had to hunt out someone to serve us. The wine list was apparently changing so we were offered a very short list of wines by the glass and these were of dubious quality despite their expense. The restaurant menu was unappealing and after having to evacuate the building due to a false...

A Pleasant Surprise
from profcain
Concerned by the most recent review, we were not expecting much from the Holt--particularly because it had been booked by our tour agency. To say that we were pleasantly surprised is putting it mildly. The exterior and public rooms are charming, the lounges warm and inviting. The staff was friendly and helpful to a fault, making us feel welcome after a very long and tiring day. Still, we hadn't reached our room yet . . . Another pleasant surprise: The room was huge, large even by American standards, beautifully decorated and...

Tired, Very Tired!
from marcuschap72
Looks very pleasant from the outside but once you step through the doors it's dull, tired and in serious need of some TLC. The rooms have definitely seen better days and need a complete overhaul. Food OK, as is bar but the surroundings seriously let it down.
Absolutely horrifying
from c_marmont
I would highly recommend avoiding the Holt unless they do some serious renovation of the place. The Holt's main business seems to be catering to large tour bus groups who essentially have no choice as to where they stay. The Good: The outside grounds and inside public areas are surprizingly fairly nice. The pub and restaurant are also decent. And in fairness to the staff, they seem to be trying to do what they can with an unbelievably bad property. The Bad: The rooms are amazingly bad, particularily the ones they deem the...

Good hotel convenient for visiting Oxford and Blenheim Palace
from Francestravels
Ten minutes from Woodstock and Blenheim Palace and about ten or fifteen minutes from a park and ride with extended hours, useful for visiting Oxford. Large room with ensuite in a rambly building that has been extended over the years. Lovely gardens and surrounded by countryside. The clientele seemed mostly business people (they have a small business office and conference facilities) but suited our touristy purpose. We got a good rate through laterooms Under new management in the last year or so. Friendly people.

Over the Summer, my family and I decided to head out into the country for a long weekend to get away from the city for a while. I heard of this Hotel through a few colleagues of mine who attended a conference here and they reccomended the Holt for its cosy atmosphere and peaceful surroundings. Even though we only spent 3 nights we all thouroughly enjoyed ourselves: every morning we had a very filling english breakfast and a really excellent meal at night - when we returned from our daytime excursions. There are quite a few lovely place to...
