Very nice
We stayed at the Old Hall while my daughter was performing in the Gilbert and Sullivan Festival. If one realizes the age of the hotel, one can appreciate how fun it is to ride the lift and the fact that none of the walls or floorboards were plumb! The bathroom was a just little musty, but we bought a scented candle and the problem was solved. Breakfast was cooked to order and delicious. No complaints at all. The wine bar was very relaxing, and my daughter was able to quietly "hang out" with some of her friends in one of the... more
Great
First time at this hotel, expensive at £110.00 but Buxton hotels are expensive. Could not fault a thing - room was great, bathroom looked fairly new. Had lunch, breakfast and both were excellent. Hotel itself had a lot of character - but number 1 was service. Every member of staff we dealt with was polite and nothing was any trouble - in fact especially at breakfast they were keen to be of assistance - something lost on a lot of hotels! Only downside parking - because it is central to Buxton (opposite Opera House) its all... more
A curate's egg of a visit
A mixed bag, but mostly disappointing. I thought I was treating myself, but a sleepless night is not my idea of fun. Perhaps because I booked a single, my room (17) was directly above the kitchen, where staff were still clattering around, shouting and whistling, at half past midnight. An extractor fan (or similar) was left on all night so there was no way I could sleep, and the clattering began again at 6.30 am. When I mentioned the fan on checking out, I was informed that this wasn't possible because the fan was timed to go off when the... more
Great Hotel!
I have stayed at the Old Hall Hotel on a number of occassions and will not stay at any other hotel. It is by far the best of the hotels in Buxton, and one must expect to pay a premium for such. I have stayed at many of the finest hotels in the land and can honestly say that the Old Hall, being a smaller hotel in this category, is comparable, to say the least. I have always stayed in the larger rooms and cannot find fault. The rooms are extremely spacious and well appointed, overlooking Pavillion Gardens. The Bathrooms are... more
don't be fooled
Here's what it says in 'A Brief History of the Old Hall Hotel' - Daniel Defoe writing in 1727 whilst staying at the Old Hall Hotel said, 'This is indeed, a very special place with it's own special feeling.' Note the date Mr Defoe penned his review - that's right 1727. Now that was quite a while back and it's interesting that the Old Hall Hotel are using this as a recommendation in their literature. Make no mistake, the Old Hall does indeed have something. It has the dank, fuggy and vapid miasma of a hotel in serious decline.... more
Must have had the same room
Our stay at the Old Hall, Room No. 6, was identical to the other bad review of the Old Hall Hotel. Can it have been the same room? I complained to the owner of the hotel that I had never stayed in a B & B that was as badly furnished, let alone a reasonably expensive hotel, I received a grudging acknowlegement which agreed with me. Very bad value for money. A good situation and a very historic building. Needs better management. I only saw the review page when using the internet to find another hotel for our next visit to the fesival.
A lovely hotel
Stayed at The Old Hall Hotel on a reunion with friends in April. I had booked it and was a bit nervous but need not have been. From the moment we met up in the hotel wine bar onwards it was a great hotel. Bedrooms looked as if they had just been refurbished, very nicely done and exceptionally clean. The hotel itself is obviously very old and steeped in history. Dinner and breakfast both good. The only negative point I could make is that there was a wedding going on on the Saturday afternoon and evening - I would imagine that there are... more
Historical excellence
There is no other word to descride the hotel than magnificent. We stayed in Mary's Bower which is apparently where Mary Queen of Scots was held prisoner. The bedroom was excellently decorated, clean and comfortable. The rate was £116.00 including a full English breakfast for the night which i believe to be very reasonable. The atmosphere was warm and inviting throughout our weekend stay. The staff were above average in every aspect and very attentive to our requirements. We ate in their restaurant each night and the food was... more
Enjoyed our stay
My daughter and I arrived in Buxton unexpectedly on Friday night 29/10.04 and the Old Hall Hotel was the first hotel we came too. It was expensive at £105, but our room was excellent. We had a family room, it was warm, clean, very comfortable and furnishings etc. fitted well with the type of hotel and our bathroom was excellent (we love big white fluffy towels!). We had an exquisite meal in the hotel from the set £26.50 menu, which was delicious, beautifully presented and the staff couldnt have been nicer. Likewise the breakfast in the... more
Not very good
We stayed at the Old hall for two nights in the middle of the Gilbert and Sullivan festival in August 2004. The hotel's location is excellent, being right in front of the Opera House, however that is the only good thing I could say about it. The hotel charged £105.00 per room per night to include breakfast - it seems expensive, however when you want to stay in a prime location at one of the busiest times of the year you expect to have to pay for it. The room was adequate although it looked in need of major refurbishment; the... more
