Lawrence's Hotel

the second oldest hotel in the world - byron stayed here - h eknew a good thing! allis ubbo room a delight - the balcony was gorgeous we sat there sipping verve clique looking at a 19th century palace and a 13th century castle the restaurant is a delight - the most excellent meal we had in portugal!

we stayed in Sintra only one night just a couple of days ago. We got the Lady Jackson room. The staff was friendly but as we already experienced portuguese people seem always a bit stand offish when it comes to small talk. The room was nice, very clean, big bathroom a bit on the old style but it had charm, the room opened to a lovely balcony to a garden. Lawrence's in Sintra is charming in its rooms, service, and dining. Our room was named Tradition. When we walked into the room we were welcomed by a fresh and gentle warm breeze from the French doors that opened to a small balcony overlooking the ravine. Here we sat with an afternoon refreshment enjoying the birdsong and greenery. Below we could see a very small yard where a few guinea hens, chickens, and geese pecked for feed. This was true comfort. If I had seen the last reviewer's comments, I should never have booked at Lawrence's. So I am very glad I did not see them, because I should have deprived myself and my wife of a really delghtful and restful 3 night holiday! I also booked through Expedia at €99 per night. Service at the hotel was excellent and most attentive, both at Reception, the bar and in the restaurant. We checked in for a 5 night stay. The first room we were in was facing the street. I asked if we could have a garden room. After a discussion on the room prices being 250 euros and we were paying 99 euros on Expedia we were given a garden facing room. About 10 minutes later the air conditioning grating fell down. The space surrounding the air con was stuffed with sheets and towels. The man who checked us in was back upstairs and we were put in our 3rd room. That was a very small attic room that was not clean. We stayed in 2 rooms, both are very charming with balcony and nice bathrooms. Since this is an old hotel, those who expect modern amenities will be disappointed. I suggest checking into the Tivoli instead. Plenty of public sitting alcoves to socialize and read. We wish we had more time to enjoy this place. Less than 5 minute walk to the center of Sintra, where the National Palace sits. The Pena and Seteais palaces as well as the Moorish castle are not within comfortable walking distance from here. Stayed with my wife to celebrate wedding anniversary for 1 night. The location is great, right in the old part of Sintra, 5 minute walk to all the shops and restaurants in the area; a parking spot should be easy to find as well. It is a small and old hotel all refurbished half a dozen years ago with very nice taste. The rooms are very nice and cosy and the service is personal and very friendly. The hotel is peaceful and small - perfect for relaxation. It is dotted with small sitting rooms and sitting areas - made it feel like a private house, helped by the fact that it was quiet. Standard room had large terrace facing directly into forest so completely private - perfect for breakfast in the mornings. The room was decorated in a simple old fashioned style, really in keeping with the history of the hotel. Had dinner in the restaurant - impeccable service and attention to detail, really enjoyed it and would highly recommend the food.... more

We stayed in Lawrence's for 3 nights in early April and found it to be very restful and pleasant - though this may have been helped by the fact that the hotel wasn't very busy at the time. Hotel location is good - about 500 meters from the central square and bus stop just outside the door for bus to the various sites. Had booked a deluxe room and room had a large terrace at the back of the hotel that was very private and quiet. Sintra is definitely worth a stop for even a short visit to Portugal - the forested hillside is dotted with picturesque mansions and palaces. The Lawrence Hotel is a renovated mansion - famously, Byron stayed there while writing Childe Harolde. Having read all the reviews about its character and history, I was very excited about staying there - but I found the actual hotel strangely underwhelming.
