Standard stuff
Stayed there with my son as we passed through Cardiff. Hotel is a modern standard box and the rooms are similar. When we arrived I am not convinced that the bathroom had been adequately cleaned, several foreign hairs found! but perhaps thats because we checked in a 3pm. The food area though is very pleasant and the room/breakfast good value, we paid £54 for a twin room. The location of the hotel is a slight misnomer - "Holiday Inn Express in the yet to be redeveloped bit of Cardiff Bay" would perhaps be more appropriate although... more
Good enough base for a visit to Cardiff
As former Cardiffians, we've stayed at the Express by Holiday Inn in Cardiff Bay a couple of times when returning for a visit and have always found it to be clean and comfortable. The continental breakfast is complimentary for all rooms and is perfectly acceptable but nothing special. We usually stay in a room with 'water views' although these are a disused wharf, a dual carriageway and steel works, which can be quite noisy throughout the night if you're not used to it. The other side of the hotel, however, is much quieter so I would... more
Previous reviews spot on.
This is undoubtedly the best limited service hotel that we've stayed in. It's modern, well appointed and spotlessly clean. The staff are friendly and the continental breakfast is good. They can offer bar snacks though so the only thing missing is a restaurant, but as their trade must be somewhat seasonal, one can understand that it may not be cost effective. A nearby hostelry, The Highwayman offers free transport to and from the pub and their food, whilst not sensational, is OK.
Double your money!
We booked our room months in advance, expecting it to be around the £60 per room per night mark – not so – on checking out I was flabbergasted to find the cost had risen to £124 per night – the reason, Wales v France rugby on the Saturday night. I know of no other service in Cardiff that doubles its prices, just because the rugby is in town. The hotel chain should be thankful to have a full house. My advice would be don’t stay during any major sport events, rock concerts or even when the sun is shining, it will cost you more.
There are better buys in the Bay
I was not impressed by my stay in this hotel, which was for one night in January. Cardiff in January is, admittedly, not the warmest, driest place to be. However the hotel did not brighten my stay, as the room was cramped and cold, and had a view over an huge industrial building - the Port of Cardiff I expect. There is a bar, but no evening meal available; however you can get a pizza delivered to the hotel if you are desperate, or there is a trendy but expensive restaurant/pub nearby. However the hotel was gloomy, and below... more
Clean, quiet room outside the center of town
Fine hotel, a bit out of the center of town. Nice breakfast, accomodating staff, nice rooms. A little hard to find, but otherwise nothing wrong!
Great hotel shame about the weather!?!?
Just returned from a night at the Cardiff Bay Hotel....Unlike other reviewers we knew an Express has only a buffet type continental style breakfast, which there is loads of and you can eat as much as you want/need.... The bar was ok as well although stock was a bit limited in the beer department....we were on a one night stop with my 9 yr old son and were able to sit and watch tv and have a couple of drinks in his company without any hassle..... Although the weather was atrocious we found a bar/restaurant next door that even has... more
In Cardiff for 2 nights only for Oasis
Myself and my husband along with three friends stayed in this hotel for 2 nights back in December 2002 as we were in Cardiff to see Oasis in concert. The rooms were clean and comfortable and the breakfast was okay too. I agree that there is not much about but its a decent hotel for an overnight visit. I would stay in the Holiday Inn Express again if Oasis come back to Cardiff. For £65 a night for a room that can sleep 3 people, its good value.
Very basic accommodation
Out on a limb in the wilds of Cardiff Bay. Just about acceptable for one night's business accommodation, but no more. No restaurant, nor even a coffee shop, and no outside restaurants within acceptable walking distance. Depressing bar area. Avoid it unless absolutely stuck.
great at holiday inn!
it was really nice there, but i felt a bit out in the middle of no where, and we found it difficult to find nice 'normal' food, as most of the resturants in the bay were foreign food, or harry ramsdens, which was shut! Other than that, the hotel was great, nice friendly staff and a clean comfortable environment to spend the night!
