Keep it secret!
Because this was such a splendid place I am hesitant to write this, as I fear I won't be able to get in again if others find it..........but........as the hotel owners and staff deserve it I must compliment the wonderful stay my sister and I had there. Charming staff, very helpful. Clean, reasonable rates and in perfect location for everything. Very good value. I know Lisbon well and this place is a little "gem". But keep it to yourselves!
Excellent for the price!
Recently returned from four days at the Alegria and first visit to Portugal let alone Lisbon. Booked with them after reading the reviews and further research and was not at all disappointed. My friend and I were a little nervous about where we were going to end up and indeed the outside was somewhat shabby-the park opposite had a few winos dossing down etc but the police station is only next door and there was absolutely no problem there. The staff were friendly and helpful-we arrived very early and yet they still allowed us to check into... more
Good value but watch the showers
My fiance and I have just spent a week at the Alegria, generally it was very good value for money with a spotless room and breakfast thrown in. The only advice I would give would be to shower outside of the normal hours (ie not before breakfast) as our shower went from cold to scalding and back again frequently. The shower cublicle was tiny and we were hopping around the bathroom too often for my liking. Location was great, only 5 mins from a metro stop and 10 mins from Bairro Alto. Breakfast range was limited but for the money we can't... more
Great Budget Stay
Great value, clean and centrally located with lovely staff. The only challenge is it is a little noisy with wooden floors and not the thickest doors in the world but for the price is a real gem.
Gret place to stay on a budget
This is a fantastic place to stay. The location was just fine (about a 10 minute walk from the main Dom Pedro plaza and the same to the Bairro Alto). The room my husband and I stayed had a view to one of the back roads and was a bit noisy at times. We paid only 43 Euro for a twin room (beds were actually quite large by twin standards). The people at the front desk were very helpful and always friendly. If you are without a car I would suggest taking a cab here. It cost us o nly 9 Euro with a tip. The Euro-port bus from the airport... more
We'd stay again!
Thanks to Trip Advisor reviews we stayed a week in May at the Alegria. We found the staff very helpful. The rooms are clean & ours looked out on the park. We felt very safe & comfortable here (friendly police station right next door). The only exception, the beds were like sleeping on granite. However, we asked a couple also staying at the Alegria about their beds, & they said theirs were very comfortable. We were unable to switch rooms because they were booked & the staff told us all the mattresses were the same??? Next time, we'll... more
our journey in lisbon
Last october we stayed in Lisbon for ten days, in the Residencial Alegria. It was a nice place to stay. Our room was quit spacious, with a wooden floor, lovely curtains. It was just renovated. Also the bathroom was very spacious, with bath and toilet. Our room looked out on a nice square. As the residencial was situated on a one-way road (between the residencial and the square) it was very quite at night. Next summer the residencial will have a bar and a room to take breakfast. The owners are very nice and helpful. This residencial is... more
Very pleasant place
I and my wife stayed in Alegria for 6 days in April this year. Our room was small, but recently renovated, very tastefully decorated and scrupulously clean. The modern bathroom was spotless. People in the reception spoke good English and were very helpful. The location is excellent, just minutes from Av de Libertade and Baixa. The only minus was that our room was at the back, overlooking the street with a noisy nightclub a few houses further down. Also the garbos were making an incredible racket at 2 AM. So the light sleepers should try for... more
Nice'n clean-Refurbished 2003
Just come back from Lisbon. Unlike previous reviews the hotel has been newly refurbished 22/05/2003. Both exterior-light lemon- and interior were look new and pleasant. Staff were all helpful, friendly and speak English. If you stay more than 3nights you may find yourself in a bouble room when there is no single room available. Location is 5-7 min walk from Rossio. In my opinion it's not the DEAD center. More like on the border of the central. No breakfirst though a kettle available, collect @ the reception.Tiny but nice Jazz bar on the same... more
Happy about the Alegria
Centrally situated on a tree-filled square, Praca Alegria ("Happiness Place"!), off the main boulevard, Avenida Liberdade, this is an inexpensive residencial which is currently being refurbished. Even so it is clean and in good repair. All the reception staff speak good English. Our room, 106, had full en suite facilities although I believe that not all rooms are yet so furnished. The tariff for this room was 38Euro per night. It is the only hotel I have stayed in where the hot water was too hot! The Square is fairly busy during the morning... more
