Pensao Londres

We arrived at the hotel with moderately high expectations considering all the reviews we had read. Upon arriving, however, we were quickly disappointed. Our room had no heat or hot water. We were told that the neighborhood had experienced a power outage shortly before our visit, so we would have to wait several hours to have hot water again. There was no central heating, and the small space heater we were provided did not work. Several lightbulbs were not working in our already dimly lit room and the tv remote did not work. The Pensao Londres was such a great surprise. I'd expected a nondescript establishment for the price (60 Euro).... but was proven pleasantly wrong! The location is in a quiet part of the Bairo Alto, but just a block or two away from the many restaurants and bars in the vicinity. The hotel had just the right amount of 'off-ness' (lace curtains and old cabinets, desk and chair in the room, clunky elevator....) to give it charm and make it not feel like we were staying at yet another Hilton or W. I was just there in November 2005. This was a cute hotel in a traditional apartment building right in the heart of Lisbon's Bairro Alta neighborhood. The bars, fado clubs, boho stores and galleries (all open into the wee hours) were just around the corner on the narrow cobble streets from this hotel. Even better, the next block on the same street had the best most eccentric bar in Lisbon: the Pavilhao Chines (Chinese Pavilion). You've got to see it to believe it. This was a great budget place to stay. We were only here for one night but really took advantage of the great location. After taking the Gloria funicular to the bottom of the hill, we were within walking distance of the Santa Justicia elevador. And a quick trolley ride to the castle and cathedral. We also walked over to the Monumental Arch and then had dinner at a sidewalk cafe on Rossio Square. Also, there is a really good restaurant called Pinoccheo (not far from the Hard Rock) across the street from the bottom of the Gloria funicular.

If you want to find the romanticism that Lisbon shows to most of its visitors, this is a real nice place to experience it!!!! I spent in this pensao two days with my couple, and it was another thing that produced that romantic sensation on me, cause our room had incredible views of the city, as it is located in the top of the Bairro Alto and you could see from there a big part of the city including the Alfama and ther castle... I would recommend the Londres. The building looked recently painted and is in a good area for tourists. It's a steep but quick walk down/up from the centre or take the funicular (a few minutes down the street). Our room was fairly small but had a great view over Lisbon's centre and across to the castle. The bathroom was also small but very clean. Staff were friendly and quite helpful. The building is a triangle and the side with a view is where the lift and stairs are - this could be noisy at night when young things come in after late nights... more

Despite the fact that this is a cheap, no-frills hotel, the room was larger than I expected (due in part to the high cielings), clean and adequately furnished. And whatever the room lacked in style was more than made up for by the view. This hotel sits up high in the Bairro Alto district, so the view looks out over all the red-tiled rooftops of the city and across to a hill dotted with old buildings and a majestic cathedral. Four of us stayed at Pensao Londres in mid-September, 2003. We found the accomodations well-located for access to the town's center attractions, restaurants, clubs and music yet far enough from the plaza's noisy streets. The secure, clean, simple rooms have high ceilings and locking swing-out windows with views on the upper floors. A vintage and well-maintained elevator eases your carry after a foot-weary day exploring, the staff is very helpful with all kinds of information and is prompt in all communications via email. Delighted with my stay this June. Cost was inexpensive, and I felt warmly welcomed. The front desk was helpful and gracious, my room and tiny shower were spotless, the view charming, the location perfect. The view from my window included the castle and laundrey drying off the balconies across the street (elegant old buidlings, this is not the Alfama). The breakfast was simple - a roll and strong coffe - enough to get me started., and a great excuse to savor the the wonderful pasteis (pastries) at the sidewalk cafes later in the day. The rooms were very charming. The views were also good. The breakfast was disappointing as well as the price was a bit high. This is a good place to stay the first night or two in Lisbon to get your bearings especially if you need English speaking hosts.
