Sharrow Bay Country House Hotel

If anyone complains about Sharrow Bay (either the rooms or dining) than they haven't been here! Everything is what you would expect to find in a hotel of this caliber. The breakfasts are exceptional as well. We hope to return soon.

We were only able to stay one night. The views from our delightful, traditionally English room over Lake Ullswater were beautiful and calming. The boats bobbing on the water, kissed by the rays of the sun, clouds skimming dramatically over the orange & greeen tones of the hills. We managed to pull ourselves away to dine from the exceptional menu, although not before climbing the hills to work up an appetite. Stayed for 3 nights and had a great time despite the indifferent weather. Sharrow Bay is a gem and having reputedly been through an indifferent period is now maintaining it’s 50 year + tradition of excellence. Rooms are great. Restaurant very good indeed albeit with some odd combinations occasionally and combining quality with quantity against the trend for more modest portions. I guess they are working on the principle that hill walking equates to large appetites! Really enjoyed it and will go again

This was our second short stay since the hotel sadly changed hands and there is definately no decline in any way. We stayed in the Serenity Garden Suite this time, which has a large ground floor bedroom with 2 walk in closets and a huge bathroom. Upstairs was a sitting room with magnificent views over the lake and fells. The bathroom was heaven having wood panneled walls with a huge mirror and a massive claw foot bath that you could lie down flat in (only if you wanted to of course). there is something about this place that makes me love it. stayed one night on the way to scotland this was not my first visit, arrived for lunch 10+++ out of 10 the first room we were given was beautiful with a lake view but overlooked the kitchen fan also which was a little noisy, would this drive us crazy in the middle of the night? possibly so we asked to be move, only one room left so we went to the lodge room a little sorry for itself compared to our first but i'm sure it will be refurbed at some point it was mostily in the bathroom We... more

Sharrow Bay is an important place to my wife and I. We had our first fine dining meal there 35 years ago (we still remember what we ate and the superb quality of the food) and stayed there 5 years ago when we had a wonderful time. The sevice, ambience and food were of the highest quality. Our third trip however was much less satisfactory. The prices are still premium but the quality is nearer to that of a 3.5 star hotel. Many hotels in the Lake District boast about their lake views, but in our experience, only the Sharrow Bay (main house) was actually on a lake. The views from the dining room and lounge are therefore unparalleled. We were lucky enough to stay one night in the Marion, a fantastically huge space with a view to die for. Unfortunately, we had to move to a smaller room (Silver) for the next two nights because another couple had reserved the Marion. Although the Silver also had a good view, definitely try to get the Marion if it's available.... more

We have been returning to Sharrow Bay for years and were intrigued to learn that they were going to be open for Christmas 2004 for the first time in their history so signed up promptly for the 3-day package for the family. It was a complete success from start to finish and there can be no doubt that the philosophy and standards established by Francis Coulson and Brian Sack are being faithfully maintained - indeed enhanced in some respects. we did not stay at sharrow bay, but rather had a supper here one night. the place certainly lived up to its reputation. excellent food, excellent service highly recommended

We have been going to Sharrow Bay for many years now and in all that time its quality has never wavered from top notch. One can be confident that even after the deaths of the founders, Francis Coulson and Brian Sack, it will carry on at the same level because of the obvious commitment that all the Sharrow Bay team have to the ideal of unstinting service to their guests.
