Signs, signs everywhere but not an ounce of service...
This hotel promised so much but delivered very little. It is supposed to be 4 star but I have never stayed in a 4 star hotel where the guest has to switch the heating on themselves - in the middle of November - and then find wander aimlessley around the corridors whilst the room warmed up. Free champagne was included within the break I booked. Not sure if it was thrift on the part of FJB hotels or a genuine desire to present the guest with cold fizz, but there was a charming laminated note in the room which said that we had to ring... more
Management response from Andyw2001

Response to Mr Evans complaint Heating in the bedroom - I am sorry you found the room cold on arrival, all our rooms have individual thermostatic controls as required by the AA. This allows guests to set their most comfortable temperature, the hotel does have a supply of fan heaters which are available on request which can supply instant heat until the radiators have reached the required temperature. The free champagne - The provision of the laminated cards were created following customer feedback. Guests who have stayed on a two day break sometimes require the champagne on arrival but the majority prefer to have it prior to dinner on the first night, with breakfast the next day or during the afternoon of the second day, by giving the customer the option we meet the individual needs rather than supplying it at a time that is convenient to ourselves. Please note, if guests have not requested the champagne by 16.00hrs on the second day the restaurant supervisor will call the guest in the room to ascertain when the champagne is required. Breakfast - The provision of toasters were solely introduced following guest feedback, some guests require their toast hot with their main course, where others require it after they have finished their main breakfast. I will certainly monitor the waiting staff as they should offer to make toast for all guests if requested. Bedrooms - I can appreciate your comments regarding the suspended ceiling and as part of our refurbishment programme these are being up dated in those particular bedrooms. Additionally, I apologise if the room was dusty and there is no excuse for this, however I am surprised you did not advise our Reception team who would have organised your room to be cleaned again immediately and also advised the Duty Manager of your complaint. The health club - We are required to have many of the signs for health and safety reasons. The newspaper sign in the sauna was placed in there after a guest left one of the many supplements from the weekend papers next to the sauna heater resulting in a fire. Guest lockers are coin operated and as with the majority of lockers of this type the coin is returned after use, none of our lockers are of a paying kind. The restaurants - La Roche restaurant does occupy the lower section of the extension (built just over six years ago) and as such the guests may use upper part of this interior route to the leisure club, however guests leaving the club have showered prior to walking through the hotel and are normally very well attired. With regard to chlorine and food smells, the leisure club entrance is approximately eighty meters from the kitchens and as such the mixed smells you mentioned do not occur. Guests booked on a dinner, bed and breakfast basis dine at the newly refurbished 'Seaview Restaurant', however for a small supplement guests can dine at our a la carte, two red Rosette restaurant 'La Roche'. If you require any further information please do not hesitate in contacting me directly at The Haven. Andrew Woodland General Manager

Superb
We had our wedding there in early September & I can't praise the place enough. Staff bent over backwards to satisfy all our needs. Nothing was too much trouble. Food was excellent. Service flawless. We also used their catamaran for the afternoon & the general manager even came down to Poole quay to make sure everything was ok for us onboard.
Very much depends on your room
I stayed at the Haven for 2 nights in September as part of a work team building exercise. Having read some of the reviews on this site I was very pleasantly surprised with my room - it was lovely! I had a family room (which has a seperate single room leading off from the entrance hall) on the first floor. The room was a good size and it had a wrap around balcony with a sun lounger and a wonderful view over the bay. There was a plasma tv and the bathroom was very modern and clean. Given the standard prices charged though I was surpised that... more
Terriific!
Having read some of the disparaging remarks about The Haven before signging in, I did wonder what I was letting myself in for! I need not have worried! It was a lovely experience - extremely friendly and helpful staff, great food, wonderful location, our room was lovely too, though the bathroom was a bit small but extremely well equipped. The spa too was a lovely experience. So all in all, a truly lovely weekend, which I hope to repeat in the not too distant future. PA London
Disappointed with our stay
We booked the Haven requesting a sea-view and balcony as we wanted comfort and relaxation. We normally stay in a Travel Inn in Christchurch when we visit the area, but thought the extra cost worth it for our three-day break. Our room would probably have been fashionable in the 70s and to reach it the corridors were carpeted with at least four different designs, each in a worse state of repair. The toilet seat was white plastic - the balcony only two foot wide with no possible way you could sit out - the sea view was marred by the... more
Haven from home!
Just returned from another fantastic stay at the Haven Hotel, Poole. Every visit brings another aspect of this hotel’s wonderful facilities to light. Where to start .... Many of the rooms host the most breathtaking views over Poole harbour, Brownsea Island and over to the Isle of Purbeck, which can also be enjoyed from the hotels lounge and dining facilities. Breakfasts are great, and during my last trip we enjoyed it on our private balcony overlooking the sea. Dinner at the Havens individually styled La Roche Brasserie is a certain... more
Haven puts Corporate Booking above full-price guests
On first sight you think you're in heaven. The location is stunning but so are the prices (£280.00) per person per night for a rather ordinary room with sea view without balcony. Then you find out that, when you made your booking, they didn't tell you that the wonderful, ocean-facing sun deck and a la carte restaurant aren't actually available to you on the prime Saturday evening as they have been reserved as part of a corporate booking to a local maker of up-market boats. Funny how that wasn't mentioned when we had a choice of where to... more
Management response from TheHavenMD

Constructive criticism will always be accepted and we are deeply concerned that the author of this review was not satisfied at The Haven. We would like to make note that La Roche is an extremely popular destination-dining restaurant and we advise our guests to book early to avoid disappointment. However we do have two additional restaurants for our guests to enjoy if the said restaurant is fully booked. Please note - it is our policy that if the client books on a 'dinner, bed and breakfast' we automatically reserve a table for the guest(s) in the Seaview Restaurant at a time to suit them. Additionally, I would like to add that the rate quoted is incorrect. The price for a double, sea-facing bedroom last weekend was £140 per person not £280 per person. We endeavour to meet all our guest(s) requirements and expectations - if any guest is unhappy with the service we are providing myself or my managers are only happy to assist them.

Really enjoyable stay
I stayed here with some trepidation having read previous reviews. I stayed in a standard room with my young daughter which overlooked the car park. I asked for and was given a refurbished room. It was very clean and had a plasma screen tv on the wall and a modern cd player. The bathroom was also clean. The bed was very comfy with a lovely warm quilt. All rooms are now non smoking. They are now refurbishing the sea view rooms and I looked round one which was being done and they are stunning, especially the corner rooms which give a... more
Not good
Just spent one night here - paid for by my company - the yearly "do". We were given a "good room" with a sea view. I happen to know the price they paid, and, believe me, it was not worth it. I have spent nights in far far superior rooms for a lot less £. The room smelt bad, dusty and smokey (I am a non smoker). The bedspread took much to be desired. The carpets were very very old as was the whole contents of the room. Probably not been decorated for at least 20 years, it had not been cleaned properly either. The food was poor, main course... more
Great location ... very poor bedroom
An unbeatable location, good public rooms and okay service let down by one of the worst bedrooms I have seen for a hotel at this room rate. The fantastic sea view just couldn't make up for the small size & general 'tired' decoration of the badly mis-named 'executive' room I booked. In fact, how they have the nerve to call this room by that title is beyond me. Even the most basic motel room is 5-star in comparision. This hotel could be one of the best in Britain given it's superb setting. However, if my bedroom was anything to go... more
