Friendly staff - Good breakfast - Would stay again.
I travel abroad frequently and most of the time I am staying in a 5* hotel. This time it was a last minute booking and I ended up in the New Continental, without any high hopes. It was only for a week so I would survive. To my surprise I actually enjoyed my stay here as the staff was very friendly and efficient and the room had a lovely sea view (I was located on the 5th floor). The breakfast was nice and even though the rooms are small, perfectly clean and OK. The first 2 floors are smoking and anyone, being a non-smoker as myself, would... more
Only stay if you are deaf
This hotel has a nightclub in its basement. The base could be heard on the 4th floor until 3am on the Friday night I stayed here. So I did not get to sleep until then. I was told the noise was worse on Saturday nights and worse on floors 1 and 2. I was also told that they get lots of complaints!! I was going to leave as I was booked in for 2 nights and could not stand the thought of staying anotehr night but at 2am in the morning was shown rooms at the back of the hotel where the rooms do not suffer from the noise. The staff moved us... more
good value city centre hotel
We stayed for one night at this hotel and have no complaints whatsoever. We arrived well before check in time and the receptionist was very friendly, arranged coffee for us while she enquired whether our room was ready for us. We had a nice room with a four poster bed which was a nice surprise considering we only paid 80 pounds. The bathroom was dated and could do with replacing but it was clean and served the purpose so it was not a problem. We found all the staff extremely polite and helpful and cannot understand the... more
Faded Splendour
Prominently displayed are pictures of when the Tory party, under John Major, had a conference in the hotel. Quite appropriate, as the hotel, like the Tories, has seen far better days. It is now a faded grand hotel whose best days are long since gone. The gym/pool in the basement isn't too bad (not the biggest pool!), but from the creaky single person lift, through the winding corridors, etc., altogether not up to 21st Century standards. Mind you there is a b-i-g JD Wetherspoons 2 mins walk away, which was hosting a beer festival when I was... more
Terrible!
Stayed here as my cousin had his wedding reception here. We paid our £80 for our family room and were really looking forward to the stay as from the outside the hotel looks lovely. The room where my cousin had his reception was lovely and the breakfast room was as well, but as for our room! We were given a room that I don't think has been decorated for some time. It overlooked Plymouth Pavillions steps and would be a nightmare for someone with walking difficulties to get to. We had to go through endless corridors, open fire... more
Decent enough rooms, but some spectacularly rude staff
I was here with a tour group in July 2004. The rooms were perfectly adequate, if a little noisy (they're on a busy intersection). But nearly every member of our group had at least one run-in at breakfast with an extremely nasty waitress in the dining room. She snarled at everyone, yelled at us for sitting at tables not designated for our group (which no one had told us about), and had a hissy fit (refusing to serve some people) because she thought we were late one morning (turns out she had us confused with another group). She made the... more
I'm sure it was great, once...
The "New" Continental... I remember this place well from my student days in Plymouth - it was the sort of place where we'd book the Ballroom because it was "posh" - well, as I discovered last Friday, they've not done anything to the place since... Check-in. OK, girls were all a bit grumpy - no pleasantries at all, no conversation or anything - very unlike Plymouth. Bedroom. Hmm, well, being more objective now - the problems were. Badly thought layout, walked through the door straight into the side of a wardrobe, had to take my bags... more
Staying at the New Continental
The New Continental provides fabulous views of the historic surrounding areas and was very comfortable. The rooms were scrupulously clean with furnishings in keeping with its Victorian exterior. Leisure facilities such as the small pool and sauna were a nice touch and the availability of beauty and massage treatments, reasonably priced, a bonus. The Restaurant was clean and bright although a tad chilly and we weren`t offered any drinks service when dining but the breakfasts were fab & filling with loads of choice. The tablecloths had also... more
