Week at the White Hart
This is a not so good hotel with a great pub. I lived in Exeter for a year and when I went back for a visit decided to stay at this hotel. The room was small, very English with creaky floors and bad TV and the sort of bathroom where you know the person next door knows your metabolic rate. Thats not why one would stay here though. It has one of the best pubs in the city, and as far as I know from a year in the UK one of the best in the country. Great ales on tap and a great relaxing garden (bring your ipod, coz they play some poppy crap)... more
Worked for me
Stayed overnight here on a Friday on my way down to Cornwall. Reception were aware I was going to be late when I arrived at 2200hrs. and were most welcoming Room was good for the rate I paid of £59.95 for two of us including brekkie. There is a Witherspoons opposite the hotel which serves drinks a lot cheaper than the Hotel and was open till midnight with a mixed age clientelle - well worth a visit. Breakfast was cooked to order with a smoked haddock and poached eggs alternative which looked excellent. I am in my... more
Don't be put off by previous bad reviews
I booked my one night stay before looking at the reviews. The reason for this is that it was the only one listed with a wi-fi hotspot in the area. At the time and right up until I got into my room I was concerned that I was in for an unpleasant surprise. My room (single non smoking) on the third floor in the extension was significantly better than I had imagined given the experiences of previous travellers there. The room had everything I needed including tea/coffee/water/biscuits/TV etc. It was clean, tidy and had been... more
Outdated and rather shabby
Stayed here for the first time and whilst reception was very helpfull and competent, the bar/restaurant staff were not. My colleagues side order of chips arrived some time after he had finished his meal and my scampi salad was very bland. The room I was allocated was in the newer portion and whilst they advertise as an old inn, the extension houses 70's rooms which are very basic and shabby. The breakfast however was very good and promptly served. Most of the guests appeared to be builders rather than business men. This is not a romantic or... more
Ok for a short stay
I stayed at this hotel for 2 nights in September 2005. The accommodation was very average - a throw back to the 70's. I had a room in the old part of the building, there was a newer extension, where I assume the rooms were more modern. The room was basic but clean. Breakfast was included in the price of £59.95 and was very good. I ate in the Tap bar (attached to hotel), which was reasonably priced and food ok (nothing spectacular). Location of this hotel was very central and only a few minutes walk to the centre.
Rooms of character
We regularly stay at the White Hart because the rooms in the old inn have so much character, are clean and comfortable. We have had excellent food in the TAP Bar. I'd recommend as the staff are always friendly and efficient. It is only a short, five minute walk maximum to the cathedral.
what a relief it was to check out!!
Outdated, tatty room.Awful beds.We were told we would be in a quiet part of the hotel, but were kept awake for much of the night by almost constant road noise. The windows were a real cause for concern-----in literature provided by management it stated that lower window only opened 4 inches for safety reasons. We were horrified to find our window opened fully. What a nightmare for anyone with a child, or anyone assuming restricted window opening as described. For anyone wanting a drink after23.00hours,don't ask for ice.Apparently its... more
Good base for touring the West Country
We stayed in one of the few family rooms which was really two joining rooms with one being a single. The room with the double was quite small but the bathroom was decent size. The rooms were in the old part of the hotel so we had to go through to restaurant to everytime we left which was a bit awkward. The food at the restaurant was good but service was very slow. The pub on the ground floor had a friendly feel to it.
Not that bad...
Just stayed there overnight - its a 15th century coaching inn but, yes, most of it actually dates from the 70's. Fund staff helpful and breakfast was excellent. Not cheap at £59 for one person but it is cheaper than most in Exeter. Why??
White Hart Hotel - Give it a miss
This place does not live up to it's billing as a 3 star traditional inn. The mid 1970's accommodation block is in need of a great deal of TLC, the torn and damaged furniture in the bar area add to the feeling of general decay. It appears that many of the staff do not really value the idea of customer service, but the greatest travesty is the restaurant. Charging 3 star prices for a grey steak, and a pepper sauce that can only be described as chicken gravy with a few peppercorns, plus the mussels in a variation on the theme of moules... more
