Fantastic location
Have just returned from a glorious weekend at the Talland Bay Hotel which is perched overlooking the bay - a spectacular location. We were particularly thrilled about the view from our bedroom window which felt so uplifting having left city life behind us. We were greeted with a very warm welcome from George, the owner of the hotel on our arrivall and were offered afternoon tea with lovely homemade cakes. Luckily we left some space for dinner which was superb and of an incredibly high quality. This is a great hotel for any foodies out... more
Pretentious B&B
We took advantage of a late availability deal.Trouble was I telephoned before they released the rates for that week on their website. They quoted £60 pppn for B&B.As the prior week was £25 pppn I was somewhat suprised at the increase, but they informed me they were busier this week. When we arrived there were only two other couples resident,so I advise anyone to wait until the rates are entered onto the website. We had booked a superior sea view room, so we were disappointed to have threadbare carpet, a blocked shower head, loose power... more
Great hotel, great food
We've been to Talland Bay several times over the years. Always enjoyed it but it's even better now. You do have to wait to be served in the restaurant but it's well worth it. I even preferred it to Rick Stein's place in Padstow. If you take a dog then try to reserve one of the garden rooms, absolutely perfect. And some of the best walking countryside in the UK. The previous owner was rather aloof (read Paddy Burt's experiences in the Daily Telegraph from a couple of years ago). The new owners are better but it can still seem rather... more
nursing home
Have been in better nursing homes. Nice location but spoiled by the atmosphere which is stuffy, dull and lifeless. The room was very small for the price. The restaurant was to say the least awfull and not worth the money. Found this in Johannsens and wondered why it was in there. Says in the book that the bathrooms were to die for, think somebody had in ours. Will never darken their doors again, if I were you don't bother.
Great view shame about the room
Let's start with the good news, beautiful gardens with a view of the sea - situated near the coastal path so no need to use the car - most of the staff were friendly and the cooked breakfast was tasty but small - now the bad news, we paid £120 for B&B which isn't cheap so were very disappointed with our room which was in desperate need of new carpet/wallpaper/furniture, we expected the furniture to be old fashioned but not warn out - our main concern was that our room door was a fire door and could be opened by anyone who so wished by... more
Pretty place - stuffy atmosphere
The Talland Bay Hotel is trumpeted in many reviews as being a haven for fine dining, fluffy white towels, Molton Brown toiletries and friendly, charming service. And at £150 per night, b & b, so it should be. Except it isn't. In its favour, it is in a very pretty location and when the sun shines the gardens are beautiful and restful. But the hotel is suffused with a stilted and stuffy atmosphere - in particular the dining room. The food is certainly beautifully presented, the china great quality, the views lovely. But it's so... more
Lovely spot - but go bed and breakfast!
Our room here was extremely pleasant and restful with a wonderful view of the garden and sea - it was very clean, tastfully decorated and well equipped. The lounge area was light and pleasant with some background music, but the whole dining experience was tedious and uncomfortable and spoilt our time at the hotel. Orders are taken in turn as people arrive in the lounge, with a wait of 40 plus minutes before even ordering not unusual. A long wait would then ensue before being taken through to partake of your meal. The dining room itself... more
Peace on Earth
If you are looking for peace and tranquility and escape from hectic everyday life this is the place for you. This part of Cornwall is the best by far and we know Cornwall well. The hotel is set in lovely grounds with beautiful views over the bay. The food is absolutely superb and presented to the highest standard. The staff were polite and friendly. We also took our Border Collie along and had some fabulous coastal walks. Only complaint would be that the furniture in the comunual area is getting a little tired otherwise perfect and we can't... more
All that glitters isn't gold OR you can't judge a book by its cover!
OK Here it goes. The setting and rooms are second to NONE. It was my favorite room our journey of a lifetime. Ocean view was awesome. HOWEVER, the food was odd but then so was the dining room procedures that they put us through. We were very upset and we felt that we were were victims of a snootty woman who didn't like that one person in the party was very disabled and disfigured and forced us to hide out in a separate room to be hidden from other guests until it was time to eat. We joke about it now, but eating there was very uncomfortable... more
A quiet haven near Looe.
A wonderfully English hotel with stunning views across the ocean at Talland Bay. A paradise for walkers as the hotel is only a couple of minutes walk from the coastal foot-path which encompasses the rugged coastline of Cornwall. Staff are gracious and helpful, and the rooms are well equipt. The restaurant menu is quite extensive, and food is well presented and cooked to perfection. I would suggest it is worth paying the supplement for a deluxe room with an ocean view.
