I had to stay in Portsmouth unexpectedly a few weeks ago and was able to book a room here last minute for a very reasonable rate. I prefer to stay in hotels that are simply furnished, clean and quiet for work and this was exactly what I ended up with. The room was a good... more

Top marks to the staff, who were very friendly and helpful. We were told about the parking arrangements and warned about the clamping, should we ignore them. The room is basic and functional. Not something to share with someone if you are not on "getting naked" terms with,... more

UNBLEIVABLY TERRIBLE and SHOCKING experience staying at the Etap hotel in Portsmouth. The sign on the reception desk warning customers not to park in the Safe Store car park next door was turned around, hidden from view. In addition, there were no visible signs in the car... more

Cheap! Service was very bad
Room was ok Some hair on the bed sheet!! Not nice! Good value for money, No shampoo, only 1 very small soap block, however the staff at reception were very nice and helpful when I complained, They also offered me a free drink. Internet was very slow and expensive!! I had to pay £3 for 2 hours, No Internet in Rooms, Only in the cafe area and only 2 computer plugs available The cafe looked like my highschool's cafe in 1999 Breakfast was rubbish, and the juice tasted Cheap!! eat everything as much as you want... more

Dear Guest, Thank you for your comments, I am delighted that you found our product clean and good value for money. I was sad to read that our services did not meet your expectations. Our £2.95 All you can Eat breakfast buffet is currently being redeveloped, I will send your comments to the F&B comity who will use them in their project. We do sell shampoo in reception, as we are a budget hotel we have removed items from the rooms that would increase the price for our customers just like easyjet has done in the aviation industry. We do offer TV Remotes, Irons, Baby Cots, Bottle Warmers and Hair Driers free of charge from reception, we only take a small refundable deposit. I apologise for the towel shortage, again any extra towels are available from reception. Again I would like to thank you for your feedback, I will give your comments to the team so we can keep improving our services. Best Regards, Mads Breum Nielsen General Manager

Didn't expect THAT!!!!
When we travelled from Beijing, we were very very tired!!!! All we wanted is a quick check in and loads of sleep! Our wish was granted when we were met by friendly and helpfull staff. They explained everything very clearly. The rooms are quite small but functional and it could sleep 3 people. Additional fascilities are available such as WI-Fi, hairdryers, etc. My wife and I decided to go eat. The staff, once again, explained where was the best place to do so! We enjoyed our stay very much! Thank you Etap!

stay away from this hotel!!!
words cant describe how mad i am with this awful hotel. i have stayed at etap hotels b4 and had a plesant stay but i would not recommend staying in this one at all. the staff were VERY rude and wouldnt help us in the slightest. the man on night shift marc pearce was so rude and very unhelpfull and i will be making a formal complaint to the management about him! i also found out from the night staff that his hotel has had over 100 police incidence! in the last few month (and they only opened i think they said november 08) thats why they... more

Dear Guest, Thank you for your comments, we always appreciate feedback from our guests. I have commented on each one of your points as they were raised in your letter: 1 City Centre: On our webpage and all official marketing it is advertised that we are 2 miles from City Centre, its £4.8 in a Taxi or £1.2 By Train; we are 0.1 miles from the Football Stadium. 2: Bunk bed: At the Etap we do not make the top bunk, this is done so we can sell the room at a better price to our guests, as the room is only £35 which is only £11.66 per person. 3: Room size, shower: The rooms are designed to accommodate 3 adults, the space is utilised to its full potential but at £35 per room it is a very good deal. The showers all have toned doors so you can’t see the person in the shower. I do agree with you that these rooms are not for 3 adults who want complete privacy while in the room. 4: Extras: We do offer our guests a wide range of extras such as iron boards, all are free of charge we do take a £10 deposit which is returned on check out. 5:People per Room: As you stated in your letter you had booked a room for 3 people, all our bedrooms can maximum accommodate 3 adults, this has to do with fire safety, we cannot allow more then 3 adults into one room at any given time. Had you informed the reception staff at check in that you were 4 people we would have been able make arrangements to accommodate you, however we are very busy in the weekends so at 3am it is not possible to make other arrangements as the hotel was full. We are sorry that we could not offer you an additional room however I was assured by my night staff that they did everything to locate an extra room in Portsmouth but the hotels were all full, not uncommon in the weekends. 5: Doorman: We do provide a man on the door in the weekends. This is done as a service to our guests, to ensure that everyone can get a good and quiet nights sleep. 6: Staying in other guests rooms: We do not allow guests who are do not know each other to share rooms, this is done for security purposes. 7: Guests registration: All guests in the hotel must be identified in the computer system by name, this is done if we have a fire emergency, we need to be able to identify everyone in each room, however I have spoken to the night staff and explained that they should have changed the name and not the people in the room. 8: Night Staff: All our staffs have been trained to deliver on our guest promises. I was assured by my night staff that they did everything possible to help you with additional accommodation; however they have to follow the fire and health & safety rules this is an area where we cannot bend the rules. Again I am truly sorry to hear that you did not enjoy your stay at the Etap Portsmouth, I have looked trough your comments and have talked to all the staff involved so we can avoid this from happening in the future. Again I do appreciate your comments and I will revise the current practices that we are using in reception so we can avoid this situation in the future. Kind Regards, Etap Portsmouth General Manager

Worst hotel experience I've had in my life, mainly due to the ludicrously unhelpful night staff. Avoid at all costs!!!
My friends and I went for a night out in Portsmouth for my friend's 25th birthday, and we chose the etap hotel because it was relatively cheap and supposedly close to the city centre; my friend had read that it was 0.1 miles from the centre, but it turned out it is a taxi ride away. We weren't looking for luxury and were expecting it to be basic, however we did have some expectations such as that the beds would be made and there would be a decent amount of toilet paper! We booked a room for 3 but the single bunk bed was not made, and... more

Good hotel, bad location - flood ruined it for me :(
I stayed at this hotel on Saturday 4th april for my 21st Birthday with my self and 8 other friends. We arrived at the hotel and parked in the loading bay, we checked in and the girl on the desk was nice and friendly and told as about everything we needed to know. We given towels?? There wasnt enough space for everyone to park at the hotel but you can park at B & Q across the road (2min walk). The rooms are smallest size and clean/practical. They reminded me alot of uni halls!! The location of the hotel is in a industrial estate near to... more

Dear Guest, Thank you for your kind commends regarding our staff I have shared your feedback with all our team members and they all send a big thank you. I am glad that you felt safe in the hotel as a budget hotel we do everything we can to make sure that our guests get a quiet night and we do have a man on the door on busy nights to guarantee the hotel stays quiet and safety is always our priority. I would like to apologise for the flooding you experienced, we had an unfortunate incident with a guests disposing large amounts of paper down the toilet which led to it being blocked, please accept my sincere apology for this incident. I can assure you that this has not reoccurred since. I look forward to welcoming back on your next visit to Portsmouth, Kind Regards, Mads Breum Nielsen General Manager

Bargain,great staff and service.
I stayed at the etap in january after a friends birthday night out and have become a regular there ever since. The staff are always as friendly and helpful as possible and there are benifits like 24 hour reception. The hotel has no resturant to speak of (but its opposite kfc, mcdonalds etc so u dion't really need one) but they do have a breakfast area for the morning where they serve an all u can eat brekkie( good for a hangover, lol), and they also stock fridge food and nibbles. The rooms are basic...all the same double bed with a bunk bed... more

Budget, basic, but adiquate. Comfortable beds. No complaints at all.
All rooms at the Etap are just £35 per night (unless they decide to up the rates if there is a special event going on, so check with the hotel first) and rooms sleep three people and are all constructed the same. There is a king size bed, with a bunk bed on top, towels and soap are provided, but not other toiletries or any complimentary tea and coffee. Hot drinks are available in the lobby at a charge and breakfast is very basic for £2.95 per person, but to be honest it is cheaper to have breakfast at McDonalds down the road. I stayed in... more

worst hotel in NATO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i booked a room for myself and my girlfriend for the weekend. i thought the price was very good an knew what to expect of the accomodation as i'd stayed in an etap before however!!!!!!! on arrival i parked outside the entrance and went into the reception asking where i could park, i was inside less than 1 minute when an independant clamping company where sat there waiting for me to make a mistake of parking in the wrong space an had blocked me in, aplied the clamp an had already began to take picture's of my car. i had to pay an instant... more

Dear Guest, First I would like to extend my sympathy regarding the clamping fine you received, I can only encourage guests not to park at the SafeStore car park, and I would also encourage any guest who has received a clamping fine to appeal directly to the SafeStore. The Etap Hotel has 25 parking spaces around the hotel and we have 75 spaces 2 min walk from the hotel all parking is free of charge for our guests. Signage is in place to deter guests from parking at the SafeStore car park but if in doubt please park in the hotel waiting bay by the front door and ask for assistance in the reception. Kind regards, Etap Portsmouth General Manager

Tap into the ETAP eperience
I can only agree with what's been written - the ETAP experience is reliable; frills free maybe but for £35.00 per room per night, this hotel offers extremely good value. The price is for between one and three per room too! The one question I have is this. In Europe, this chain offers a regular business user scheme - but doesn't do so in the UK. Why not please? Most business travellers don't want frills or complications and this simple approach, with the self serve continental breakfast option makes an early get-away easy. Worth... more

Grate Value for Money
I came to Portsmouth for business and stayed the night in the Etap Hotel, for the price it was excellent, nice shower and good clean room, the staff were very friendly and all this for just £35, even the buffet breakfast was good value at £2.95 I am staying again on my next visit.
