Owners friendly, great location, rooms awful!
from fiona81Ireland
We had seen all the reviews here before booking, and yet booked it, as we couldnt find anywhere cheaper near here, and were travelling on a budget. However, I have to say, it is pretty bad. The location is great, and the owners are really friendly and will tell you anything you need to know about walking trails or bus times, but the rooms are damp and dark and many have no windows, ours had one but it opened onto a kitchen which wasnt part of the hostel, so it was covered by some plastic! apart from the damp and dark factor, the room itself...

Perfect Location, Ok Hostel
from A TripAdvisor Member
As long as you know what you're getting into before hand it's not such a bad place. After reading several reviews I was very much concerned, but upon arrival it wasn't so bad. Finding the office is extremely difficult, though locals are more than happy to point you in the right direction. Upon arrival I was offered a room upgrade and asked how much more I would be willing to spend for it. Ended up in a room with a bathroom all to myself, though the only window looked out into the hallway. All in all not bad for a hostel, but I would...

What a good view!

I had a little difficulty in finding this hostel. The room was good and quiet. It's very near to Amalfi. The price was also reasonable. And these places are full of excellent landscape! Thanks, Atrani.
Thumbs down from me too!

Although I stayed here two years ago, after reading the latest reviews nothing has changed.I thought I would add my experience of staying at the worst establishment of my travles to date. Please read on and consider if contemplating making a reservation. When my wife stayed here in 2004 we were given the room nearest the reception it had no windows and smelt musty and damp. The toilet had no seat on,when showering there was water everywhere. The guest kitchen was a total joke it was filthy. When we asked the owner for two cups for making...

I would have to say that this hostel is the worst I have stayed in ever in my life......I stayed for a total of 2 weeks in the rat infested pidgeon house and almost died as a result.....45 degree heat in the heighht of summer - lets not have any windows hey?! thats a great idea! & to top it off, bathrooms flooding into your bedroom and ruining expensive electrical equipment ie. camera's!!! grrrrr double grrrrrr Never stay there - overpriced and definately illegal, stay away! (I love Atrani, I ended up staying there for 2 months after this...

Do Not Go!
from A TripAdvisor Member
I just came across this website looking for reviews for NZ hostels...when I remembered the terrible Scallinatella. Oh boy. I was there in 2000 and it was the only time in my life that I've left a place because it was unsatisfactory. After they lost our booking we made two months prior...we had to upgrade to a private room. This room was terrible, over priced and get this...walls that did not reach the ceiling and no window. They claimed that our bags would be safe in this room, where someone could climb over the walls and watch us while we...

Avoid at all costs

Even if A'Scalinatella was the only hotel/hostel with rooms available in Amalfi I would not to stay there again! Trust me, even the beautiful Amalfi won't make up for it!
Damp and overpriced
from A TripAdvisor Member
My girlfriend and i stayed in the hostel section of A'Scalinatella for 2 nights whilst travelling down the Amalfi Coast and were very disappointed with the experience. The rooms on the ground floor were incredibly damp & the air was thick & heavy to breathe - despite being given clean sheets on arrival, these were very quickly soaking themselves. Obviously this made for a very uncomfortable few nights with little sleep!! On top of this we thought the price was pretty steep at 60 Euros per night (for 2 people) given that we stayed in a...

Great owner, Gross place
from sarahdreyfuss
My traveling partner and I stayed in the hotel part of this establishment in late June/early July 2005. As for location and price, this place is unbeatable. It's only a 15 minute walk from Amalfi, the SITA bus stop is right up a flight of stairs, and there's a free beach in Atrani right outside the Piazza that's easily accesible. But the rooms themselves were not at all up to par. The bathrooms smelled musty, and the shower and toilet were seperated by no more than a square foot. I wouldn't go in there without flip-flops. The pillows are...

M. C. Escher could have built this town!
from A TripAdvisor Member
Piazza Umberto I, 5-6 089-871492/871930 Really wonderful and sweet little hotel/hostel/apartments in a wonderful maze of a tiny town right on the sea around the bend from Amalfi. Owner speaks English, room comes with good breakfast in dining room on the piazza. Great little town to hike around the hills or swim in the warm sea. Beach right on the edge of town with fishing boats on the sand. Good little restaurants right on the water's edge. Reasonable for July: 100E for a room with three beds, great bathroom. Bring earplugs for very active...
