Hotel La Bussola

After reading reviews about this hotel, I was hesitant to book it; however, its location right on the water and the lack of stairs to climb (unusual in the area) appealed to us. The hotel is right in front of the water. They have a carpeted dock with lounge chairs available for guests who want to swim. It is less than a five minute walk to the center of Amalfi. Stayed with my wife at The Bussola in Amalfi October 28-30 to celebrate our wedding anniversary and had one of the best hotel experiences of our visit to Italy. We had Room 317 on the top floor, it was just great, 2 balconies, facing the sea, great views, just nice. Vincenzo, whom we were lucky to talk to from the begining (reservations, etc) was also great. Italy, Amalfi, Hotel Bussola--------------- We intended to just stay one night, but our children loved swimming off the hotel dock, so we stayed an extra night. We were warmly welcomed and led to the sweetest little room with a balcony overlooking the harbour. The room was bright and cheerful and clean and an absolute dream. It made for a magical stay in one of the most beautiful places in the world!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This hotel is not luxurious but it is an absolute winner on location. In fact I'd be hard put to think up a better location in Amalfi as it's right on the waterfront overlooking the marina and the commercial jetties and it's a flat and pleasant 2 minutes walk to the main square with its restaurants, bars, shops, buses and ferries. First off no air conditioning and it gets hot in the summer (visited in July). When I made my reservation I was quoted a price but when the hotel confirmed the reservation they raised the price. I recontacted them and they apoligized and corrected the mistake. When we left the hotel ( a day early due to noise and no a/c) my wife paid the bill while I loaded the car. We held our wedding reception at the Hotel la Bussola and I must say from start to finish they were nothing but accommodating, helpful and very pleasant. Our meal was wonderful and they made us and our 50 guests feel right at home and were happy to provide us with anything we wanted. Some of our party also stayed in the hotel and reports were generally good - rooms could do with a little updating and we were made remove our own water bottle from the fridge !! but other than that we have no complaints ...

The central location of this hotel is a major plus. It is close to the town centre, harbour and bus terminus, but on a quieter part of the waterfront. The photographs on the website were taken before the construction of a marina. While this limits the area in which you can swim, there is enough clear water to make the deck to the front of the hotel a useful (if not spectacular) resource. The staff are friendly and efficient. This hotel was clean but had very, very plain rooms. We paid a ridiculous amount to stay here. We had a room for 4 people and the room was an ok size for 2 but really too small for 4 adults. Only 2 pillows were provided and when we asked for two more we were offered one and had to practically beg for the other one. The bathtowels are like floor rugs - very rough! La Bussola is indeed in a great location - open the bedroom shutters and the harbour is right there, ready to be watched from the balcony. Inside the bedroom it's a different story. The room looks ok, albeit the furniture and fittings are a bit old. But it's one of those places that just feels dirty. The bathroom simply smelt unclean, and the sink had the accumulated grease of who knows how many guests.
