GREAT LOCATION, Great price!!
We stayed for one night on May 13 and found the location to be superb! The check in gave us a scare as the clerk could not find our name, but I showed him our internet print out and he gave us room 6. The room was the non smoking room and faced the street. My friend had room 8 and hers faced the roof of some other building. Oh, if you are a light sleeper, be aware that you can feel the train/subway in room 6. Therefore I'd ask for a higher floor perhaps? Otherwise, I slept like a baby :) The rooms are small but clean, and as... more
No Frills but good value
My husband and I stayed at Hotel de la Porte Doree April 26 and 27th. Our room was small but very clean. Something you are prepared for when you are planning a trip to Paris no doubt. The shower was a bit disappointing as the temperature fluctuated continuously. Had I been staying longer, this would have really upset me, but for 2 days I could live with it. We preferred to have the windows open at night as it was a little stuffy, although I would imagine during the summer- unbearable. The noise from the street/metro didn't bother us as we... more
A Great Value!
Hotel de la Porte Doree is an exceptionally good value, about half what you would pay for a similarly nice small hotel closer to the center of town. The hotel is in the eastern part of Paris, in the 12th, but with a metro stop (Porte Doree) maybe 100 feet from the entance. All of Paris is thus less than 30 minutes away. (note however that the rumble of the subway at night, and traffic sounds can be heard, especially if you stay on the street side of the building). Staff were helpful and friendly -- we booked late and they were very... more
Hotel and staff met, actually went beyond, my expectations
I have been following up reviews of this hotel since last year when I ran across good review from one traveler in another web site. I stayed there 4 nights after a weekend trip to the country. I got room 12 which is on the side street. Yes, you can hear the rumble of the metro train but it did not bother me. The room is very clean. The bathroom is spotless. I did not have problem with hot water and the reason could be that I showered late in the morning. The chamber maids were very accommodating. The breakfast was not an issue. The... more
It's okay
We have just returned from a stay at this hotel (May 1-4) having chosen it based on the fabulous rating it received on this site (#11 or 1471). We also were told by the man at the front desk that "breakfast was included"... (bread and coffee and OJ, and I don't drink coffee nor eat bread, although my partner does). After our second morning of breakfast, I thought to ask again about it being included and a woman (young) said it's not included, it's 6 euros per person per day "and it says so right there." I couldn't see what she... more
Management response from christinap0rted0ree

Wow, it feels like months since the last time I have written! Sorry about that, we have been so busy. Ok, so again I do have to respond to this one. First of all about the breakfast. There is two reviews that say someone at the hotel is informing people that the breakfast is included. I have asked all of our receptionists and everyone has told me "no, of course I know it is 6Euros". The only explination I can find is maybe a misunderstanding as both people who have wrote this speak English and our night men do not. (Well a little :-) We do have the price posted outside before you come in (this is a law in France) we also have it posted at the reception, we also have it posted on our web site and in the book I have written that is found in each room it is also written in general information. I'am very sorry if anyone has had a problem finding this information but trust me, we do not make it a habit to tell people it is included and then make them pay. As for the price 6Euros per person, if you have travelled a bit you will find it is not expencive. We get our croissants from the bakery across the street which is one of the best in Paris and maybe to some it may seem simple as it is continental. I would love to add eggs, homemade jam, cereal etc but this has been a big debate here, if we do we have to charge at least two euros more as even now we only break even on breakfast. Anyway, it is always a service and never usually a way to make money in hotels. Next about the shampoo. Again our hotel is only 64Euros for a double room. I know it is nice to have all sorts of soaps, lotions etc but when the day comes that we charge the more "parisien" prices like 90-150 Euros then trust me, I will have so much fun adding that to the rooms :-) And last about ice. It may be hard for Americans to understand but in Paris no one uses ice. No hotels are equiped with ice machines and the fact that we even have ice for clients is actually quite special. All that said, as I personally love ice we do have plans to add a special little room for a ice machine and a coke machine, hopefully this summer. But this addition, like the washcloths are really something that you don't find often in a two star hotel in Paris. I do keep trying though and I don't quite understand why it is "sad" that you are served ice in a ice bucket but anyway.....

Nice stay at the "Golden Door".
I recently stayed a week in "Hotel de la Porte Doree" I found this Hotel magnificent. The staff was very exemplatory towards our services. They tried there hardest to meet our needs and made us feel like it was home. The ladies of the hotel were very friendly and helpful towards us. We found them to be very cherful. My roommate and I went and bought flowers from a market on that street for them because they always smiled and it always is nice to start the day off with a smile. We would call down for breakfast and it would be up in just a... more
Dissapointed by service
I chose to stay at the Port Doree after reading all of the good reviews on trip advisor and because it seemed like great value for money. The room was clean and spacious, but that was about the only good thing. The whole time we were there there was no hot water. In order to get even a quick shower, you had to take one at 4:00 in the afternoon. I asked the hotel receptionist on duty if breakfast was included with the price of the room and he said that it was. We ate the rather dissapointing breakfast of a croissant and half of a... more
Great little family run hotel
This little place was great. We spent 72 euros for three people to stay. The room was large enough by Canadian standards. The bathroom was very clean and spacious. We had a bath and shower to use. There was an elevator in the building, small but useful and the metro (subway) was right in front of our building. It meant travelling around the city really easy. Our room was at the back which meant it was very quiet at night. There were bakeries our front which allowed us fresh bread every morning. I would highly recommend staying here... more
Loved it!
Four of us went to Paris in April, including one who had lived in France for a couple of years and returned as frequently as possible. I chose Hotel de la Porte Doree based on the reviews on TripAdvisor. My father-in-law (the frequent traveler) was very concerned because it was only rated 2 stars. He felt we should not stay in anything less than 3 stars. Towards the end of our stay, he came up to me and commented on how nice the hotel was, and he was glad I had chosen it. We loved the breakfasts, and the rooms were small, but nice.... more
Great Paris base
The Porte Doree is a fabulous value and really provides for a great base from which to explore Paris. The rooms are small but totally adequate, clean, comfortable, nice bathrooms. We stayed in room 12 (non-smoking) for 8 nights and couldn't have been happier. The Metro is right outside the front door and for those unfamiliar with the Paris Metro system have no fear. It is efficient, inexpensive (especially is you buy tickets in blocks of ten, "carnet de billieterie"), clean, safe. Have no fear the Metro will get you there with little... more
