Islazul Mar del Sur Aparthotel

We went to this hotel as a last minute trip with our two young kids 2yrs and 9 months. It was what I had expected after reading all the reviews very good value for the money we paid 2000 grand for flight and hotel All Inclusive for all of us. My wife and I just came back from Varadero a few hours ago after staying at the Mar Del Sur. The 2 star rating for this Hotel is generous and obviously not in the regular hotel standard rating. I would give it 1.5 star. In general its not a bad place. Hotel Staff hotel are OK. What can you expect after 45 years of brutal communist dictatorship. Just returned from a week at this Varadero hotel. My spouse and I got a package deal through Go Travel Direct for $699 CAD pp for two, the lowest price we saw for a week in Varadero. We figure we saved about $1800 over what a five star resort would cost, and hey, it's the same beach. Mar del Sur is good value for the money. Flight - cheap packages get inconvenient flight times. We arrived at the hotel at 4:45a.m., two hours late. Return flight was 30 minutes late leaving, 3:15p.m. Bottles of booze are 1 peso cheaper at the duty free... more

For the money that myself and family paid, it was worth every penny. Great staff, rooms were cleaned everyday, food was good, so for the price you pay don't expect 5 star hotel cooks. Overall, we had a great time, been there two years in a row and plan to visit in the future.

Where to begin? A buddy and I travelled down to Cuba in March to check out Varadero. Great third trip to Varadero, Cuba (all in the last 1.5 years). The two previous trips I stayed all inclusive at the Brisas de Caribe (fantastic hotel... don't be fooled by some of the negative reports!!), but because I was staying long stay (one month) this time, the affordability of the Horizontes Mar Del Sur Hotel and Apartments caught my eye. Just arrived yesterday from Veradero after staying a week at Mar Del Sur. This is my third trip to Cuba, and probably the last one! The front desk staff are not helpful at all, every time you ask a question, whether it is where is the bank, when will our Hola Sun rep be on site, they would never give you a straight answer, never helpful! Always put you on your own. Look up the information it in the book, the bank on the street with no specific or address or specific directions. May be they have hired a punch of ignorants to look after... more

this hotel a amazing. it was a simple place but the staff and the entertainment was really cool. i stayed there for a week and i'm planning to go back next year for two weeks. the beach was a nice walk away - letting you get away from the resort and see a bit of the city. of course varadero isn't the place to go if you want to experience the cuban culture and real lifestyle, but its a great party place. the bars were great and... what more can i say, i had a blast. i would suggest this hotel to anyone who wants to stay at an appartement... more

A good place for the budget minded traveller. The food is adequate , the staff are pleasant and what do you want for the price you are paying?

I have stayed at this hotel a couple of times and loved it. The people are friendly (except for the complaining tourists), the food was good and ofcourse the beach was magnificent! I also had a chance to stay in a casa particular in Cardenas - believe me Varadero is not real Cuba. So, if you want all the riches of a 5 star hotel - go to Florida or something. Know where you are going and be respectful of others in Their Country. Very good hotel.
