The Strand Hotel

Excellent hotel, very pleasant staff, good location. We got a $189 rate thru a promotion with Travelzoo - which made it a bargain with breakfast included. Normally rates are in the upper 200s. We took the NJ Transit train from Newark to Penn Station and walked to the hotel - maybe 5 blocks. Only minor criticisms, as noted by others: only two elevators made for long waits; restaurant not yet open; and the close proximity of rooms to one another and the elevators led to noise at times, but it was of little consequence. We 3 women stayed at the Strand this weekend (Fri-Sun) and had an exceptional time. Everyone from the doormen to the folks behind the desk were extremely friendly and helpful. Our room was 2 double beds and enough room to get around comfortably. Beds were soooo comfortable. Room looked out on Empire State Building...very nice, especially during a snow storm! We stayed at The Strand last night with our family and it was wonderful. The hotel is beautiful, intimate and the staff is attentive, friendly and responsive. The room was lovely, free wifi, beds were very comfortable and we had a great view of the Empire State building. Breakfast was included and it was very nice, much better that I thought it would be. We loved it and would stay again in a heartbeat.

I can't say enough wonderful things about this hotel. We arrived for a one night stay at 11:00 am and our room was ready! Very pleasantly surprised. Our room was on the 17th floor and it was beautiful. It is the perfect size with a king bed, coach and chair with foot stool. Plenty of room to walk about. We had friends visiting with us and four in a room was no issue. the bathroom was fantastic with a rain shower. Bed was super comfortable and cleanliness was superior. Well this is a great place!! ... with a great bed, great bed linen, great breakfast, great helpful and approachable staff (they really go out of their way to make sure you are having a good stay), in a great location. New York is by definition a very noisy place, so i guess you don't come to this city and expect to get a beauty sleep... But, we did! As mentioned the staff were all very friendly. The breakfast was delicious, fresh and appetizing. The seating area was somewhat oddly arranged at the bottom of the stairs, but that may improve once the hotel is fully operational. Bathroom was fine except there was no place to put anything, not a single shelf or even a hook for the robe they nicely provide. While staying at the Strand one can relax and rejeuvante in between enjoying all that NY has to offer. the Strand fills a much needed niche in midtown. The hotel is large enough to provide guests with meeting space, roof top bar with stellar views of the Empire State Building and beyond, a restaurant (starting in Feb), and gym, etc, while being small enough that the personable staff remember and welcomes you with a smile and a name while helping with bags, cabs and directions. while this hotel was only open since the Saturday, and we arriving on the Wednesday this hotel was fantastic.. the staff were so friendly and willing to assist in anything that you requested.. there were always on hand with useful information such as weather, sales, shows, cabs etc... the rooms were superb, very clean and very modern.. the robes were so warm and toasty also.. the only downside to this hotel was the view.. however for a hotel just off 5th we were not really interested in the view... more the shopping! and breakfast was also... more

I travel 3 weeks out of a month and come to NYC often; this is the kind of hidden gem I love finding. Upon checking in the entire staff welcomed us by name and asked if we needed any help with reservations or recommendations for lunch. Everytime we exited or returned they greeted us by name. The restaurant is in the process of being built but will not be ready until 2010. This would be a wonderful place to stay with one important change: triple-paned windows to block the street traffic. I stayed there 3 nights, and every night there was sleep-depriving noise, including after-midnight garbage collection, traffic thunking over metal plates in the road, and so on. Add to that a heating system that clunks on and off all night and rooms that are all next to the elevator, and I had the 3 worst nights of sleep in recent memory.
