Glamour and Funk--Rivington delivers both
This hotel is for those who appreciate cutting-edge design, a hip attitude, and being the first to experience something new. Rooms are sleek and minimal, the bathrooms spectacular. Mattresses are Tempur-pedic. Sheets and towels are Frette, bathrobes the best I've ever seen, and the toiletries are Paul LeBrecque. Complimentary breakfast includes pastries from Balthazar, fresh squeezed orange juice and espresso. Staff is gorgeous (check out Jonathan, the bartender) and helpful. All this for only $235 a night! You would pay double this... more
Unfinished and very understated
The overall feel is unfinished. The room views are amazing and it is def like no other hotel. The lobby is practically non-existent and the staff seems a bit inexperienced. If you want grand and ritzy this isn't the place. More indie and hip with a polished but trashy glam. The chairs in my room had stains, the carpet had cigarette burn spots and the edges of the carpet that met the walls had crusty paint. But at first glance everything is beautiful. You can't trust their website descriptions. I was told I would have a soaking tub over the... more
Hip but needs work
The hotel looks hip -- totally black hallways, bright red carpeting, floor to ceiling windows everywhere, and fabulous black tiled bathrooms -- however, even before the grand opening, wear and tear is showing. There are nasty scuff marks on the walls, the carpeting is shabby not shaggy, and the lobby furniture looks like last year's over-used Ikea. The place is ready for a renovation. For $285 per night (which included the by-now-to-be-expected upgrade to a suite) hip, minimal design and a couple of plasma TVs are not enough to make up for... more
No Place for Business
I chose the Rivington for a recent business trip to NY because I was intrigued by the idea of staying at a place that offered something different from the usual business hotel. The hotel is on the lower east side, a great spot for a weekend frolic; not so hot for most business purposes, including mine (but I knew that going in). The staff were friendly and efficient. The room was decent-sized, hip, and the floor to ceiling glass walls from my corner room made for wonderful views from the Brooklyn Bridge and Wall Street all the way to the... more
Lower Eastside Hipness
Me and three of my girlfriends stayed at the Rivington from June 16-20. The entrance is very understated from the outside, but once you walk in, the interior is very stylish. Has "hipster" written all over it. The lobby bar served up great drinks and the loung was cool to chill in after a day of exploring the lower east side and east village. Our room was much larger than other Manhattan hotel rooms. The posterpedic bed was awsome, as was the japanese soaking tub in the bathroon. Speaking of the bathroom, it was large enough to... more
Average but read on....
I stayed for a night in June 2005. Reservations - Be careful. The first time I booked online, I called back in a few days and they acted like they didn't get my reservation. Of course, the cheaper room I requested was "no longer available." Instead they book me in a larger room for, you guessed it, much more money. But it is not over yet....when I arrive, they don't even give me that room...instead they give me a Suite for the same price??? Very odd. They need to get the reservation process straight. Room - The Suite was a... more
Very hip
I booked a regular room but was upgraded to a corner suite for the same price when I arrived. The hotel was not completely finished but the staff was accommodating & friendly. The room was AWESOME! Floor to ceiling windows with double layer curtains that can be drawn back for privacy but what a view! Views of the Empire State Building & Lower Manhattan. The heated tile bathroom was terrific. I never spent so much time in a NYC hotel room than I did here soaking in the Japanese soaking tub. The Tempurpedic bed & Frette linens were most... more
Great Bang for your Buck during Soft Opening
This hotel was excellent for the price I paid ($235 plust tax), I stayed at the Gansevoort subsequently for $465 plus tax, and Rivington was just as good if not better. The room was large, funky with two big flat screen TVs (one in sitting room and one in bathroom), and had nice products in the bathroom and great views of Lower East Side. The service could definately be improved upon, the staff were friendly but over-worked and could have been more helpful but just didn't want to go out of their way (they wanted me to walk 10 blocks to buy... more
Our Rock Star Room at the Rivington
My girlfriend and I booked our room at the Rivington after reading about its soft launch through an article in Conde Nast Traveller. The hotel hasn't officially opened yet, so the rooms (at $250) are considerably less than they will be once the hotel has had its Grand Opening. After reading some earlier reviews on this site, we were prepared for a few glitches. We were pleasantly surprised and even somewhat overwhelmed by the superior room, pleasant staff and excellent breakfast. Our 12th Floor room contained a two-person Japanese soaking... more
Amazing rooms, friendly, but bumpy service
I booked a medium king room on friday of Memorial Day weekend and was upgraded to a corner suite. We were so happy that we cancelled other plans in outside of the city and stayed another nite in the same room. The room we stayed in was on the 11th floor with spectacular 180 degree views of uptown with the Empire State Building, the west village and downtown skyline. The ceiling to floor windows create a "floating feeling" when you wake up and see just sky. If the sky and cosmopolitan views aren't your thing, just press a button on... more
