Vila Bled

My boyfriend and I stayed here as part of a walking holiday (Inntravel - highly recommended) in May 2006. (It's shocking that I'm only just getting around to writing a review!) I'd just like to recommend Villa Bled to any travellers who are planning on visiting Lake Bled. We arrived unannounced, and asked about a room, and were promptly given a guided tour of the hotel, seeing Tito's desk and private cinema, and being told stories about the area. We stayed for 2 nights to celebrate my birthday in the middle of a long trip around Europe, and it was a great find. A fabulous location by Lake Bled is icing on the cake for this splendid hotel. The 1950s architecture is actually quite appealling in a slightly forbidding kind of way, but the hotel itself is very welcoming. Rooms are pleasant with lovely views over the lake, the spa is very well appointed, and the food, wine and service in the restaurant are excellent. Rowing over to the island on one of the hotel's rowing boats is unmissable.

My wife and I stayed in Vila Bled for two nights during a driving tour of central Europe. As a previous home of President Tito this hotel certainly has history and atmosphere in abundance. Vila Bled is set in it's own grounds close to Lake Bled. Guests have free use of the hotel's rowing boats, which enables you to row across Lake Bled to the onion domed church on it's own Island. Lake Bled is one of the most beautiful places I've ever been. It's a shame that communist era architecture mars some of it's beauty. Vila Bled definitely falls into that category, but is quickly forgiven with it's serenity, service and beautiful outlook. The grounds are beautiful and well kept. We have now been to Vila Bled several times before. It is a luxury hotel with stunning views over Lake Bled and a great starting point for walks around the fairytale lake. This year we booked a room with a balcony overlooking the water and it is a real pleasure to eat breakfast on the balcony and sit there to read or listen to music. Vila Bled picked us up from the airport in Lubyana and returned us there at the end of out holiday. That is wonderful service. We ate at the hotel quite a lot. I hadn't liked the look of the outside of the hotel from the photos but I hadn't realised that Bled doesnt have any nice looking buildings (or at least the main town doesnt - it's very modern). However the inside of the hotel was very airy and spacious and had a historical feel to it being Titos old palace. The room was very comfortable, as was the bathroom. We were thrilled to be upgraded to the Presidential suite AKA Tito's suite. Incredible location with gorgeous view of the lake/castle/island. Despite Relais and Chateaux rating, the hotel feels like it is still in the communist era. Attempts at updated decorating fall short by western standards especially given the price. Have to admit though, it was fun to use Tito's bathtub!

Stayed here in September, 2004 whilst touring by car. Bled itself is very beautiful but very busy, and all other hotels may be affected by traffic noise. Although Villa Bled stands on the lake shore, there are no open views of the lake, but it is visible through the trees in the private grounds surrounding the hotel.
