Relais Maresca

Tourists from all over the world should consider that there are districts in the most beautiful cities in the world that for many reason they would better not go to, for example Downtown in Los Angeles, King’s Cross in London or the Casbah in Marrakech. I don’t understand why they usually don’t do it! May be they are misled by photos; they are attracted by the sea, the nice rooms, but they don’t know that swimming is often forbidden near the ports and that rooms could be very inhospitable if the hotel is near a port or a station... more

Having read recent reviews there are obviously mixed feelings. I cannot agree less with the couple from Devon who stayed there in September. My wife and I stayed there for 6 days at the end of Sep and adored it. I think it does depend to a large extent on the room you have. We were on the top floor in a corner with a beautiful view over the activity in the port with no noise or fumes. The room was large, well decorated and well cleaned. Important for all travellers considering the Maresca: The Hotel is situated just above and to the right of the (daytime) tourist centre of the Marina Grande. The location would appear eccellent geographically, but is of course very loud. The reader from Oslo is right to say that it was better in days gone by. It was in fact closed for many years in the 90's and the only person living there was the elderly owner who refused to sell. As an old traveler, when I was young, I stayed in Capri many times, most of them at the Maresca hotel, when the owner of this little nice hotel was Mario, a very special guy. After so many years I decided to go back to Capri and return at the Maresca. It is quite literally on the port, so there is constant noise all day, and a wonderful aroma of diesel fumes... If you prefer to feel sick on your holidays then this is the place for you. The actual hotel wasn’t that bad but the location was absolutely terrible. The staff are awful, the breakfast is dire. At night nowhere is open to eat, you have to continually keep taking the funicular into Capri town. It sucks. We stayed at the Relais Maresca for two nights in September. It was lovely! Our room had a sea view and small terrace, and was large. The room was cheerfully decorated in yellow ceramic tile. Bathroom was huge, clean and well taken care of by the staff. Breakfast on the terrace was great. Hotel is in a good location close to all transportation to, from and on Capri. Will definitely stay there again!

Hotel has great view accross the the sea to naples and Vesuvius. Room was clean and well attended. Overall service though I am afraid nothing near what you would expect from four star Hotel. On Capri generally-a beautiful Island, very busy pebbly beaches in high summer. Most disappointing of all though about the Island, is the daily overcharging, giving to little change, from funicolare staff, ice cream shop, restaurants etc. Maybe I just had a bad experience, but everyday? For a 4-star hotel, Relais Maresca does not meet expectation. On our trip to Italy we decided to stay someplace nice for our night in Capri. However of the 5 places we stayed in Italy (all the others being 3-star) this hotel was our least liked. The staff were not very obliging nor were they as friendly as we had found them to be at our other accommodations. My husband & I just returned from a trip to Italy in which we stayed at the Relais Maresca in Capri. The hotel is located in the Marina Grande where the ferry's to and from the island arrive. We were given a sea view room which was very nice and large. However, Capri in July is very busy and the sea view room gets a lot of the street sound. Regardless, it is definitely worth it! We stayed at the Relais Maresca for 4 nights at the beginning of May and we had a fantasic time. It was our first visit to Capri and we think we absolutely picked the right hotel. It is beautifully decorated, clean and with a view to die for. Positioned right near the entrance to the funicular railway and to the bus stops, it is really easy to get around the island from here.
