Montpensier

My wife and kids and I stayed at the Montpensier for 4 days in July of '06, and we absolutely loved it. (We're now thinking about going back, which got me looking at Trip Advisor again.) Anyway, we thought the location was perfect, the price was right, the rooms were spacious, and the staff was friendly. It's three blocks from the Louvre and one and a half blocks from a Metro stop. It was also inexpensive. For the price, I don't think you can beat this place.

This hotel is very close to the Louvre, but a walk from everything else- 20 minutes to Notre Dame and an hour to the Eiffel Tower by foot. Metro station close by however. The men who worked at the hotel were "cool" but the women were very pleasant. Our room was huge, much bigger than it needed to be- easily could have been 2 rooms, probably 3. Breakfast was not worth 8 Euro at the hotel, little pastry shops are close by however.

We loved our stay at Hotel Montpensier. Our room was on the top floor and it was perfect...very comfortable, clean and quiet. We shared a shower which we never saw or heard anyone else using, we felt like we had the whole floor to ourselves. The hotel is nothing fancy but for 71 euro a night for two people it is a total bargain and the location is great. We stayed here (room #41, 5th floor) for 3 nights in May 2007, and it was fantastic. The location was great. The room was clean and a good size. We had a top floor room over the street, and a shared shower down the hall, toilet, bidet and sink in room. We never saw another person using the shower, so it felt like ours. The Elevator is small and charming. There was an air conditioner in the room, but we didn't need it, blow dryer, and TV. Booking anything on the internet is never without a certain amount of anxiety. But we were pleasantly surprised at our great good fortune with this one. This hotel is over 300 years old and has one of the oldest elevators around. But it works! And after a full day of walking around Paris it is very much appreciated. The hotel is old and if compared to North American standards may appear to be very lacking. But remember you are in very expensive Paris and you will realize you have a bargain. Stayed 28th November to 4th December 2006 with friends for an event at the Louvre. Basic accommodation, but extremely central and clean. The bonus is how cheap it is. Rooms start from about 66 Euros a night for a double with shower down the hall, we stayed in a room with a double and a single (en suite) for 91 euros, and the quad room (2 doubles 2 singles, also en suite) was about 140. This hotel was decent, it was well-priced in very expensive Paris. The front desk was polite and efficient. We thought it was a little strange that you were expected to leave your room key at the front desk when you left the hotel. Also, the tiny elevator was pretty rickety and barely fit me and my carry-on size luggage. The lobby was nice but the room was drab and nothing at all like the pictures we saw on the website [--]. This was a great location, we could and did walk almost everywhere. The hotel is clean and quiet. Not all the rooms are equal, some are quite small. We were on the fifth floor and in the rear so it was very quiet. We would stay there the next time we are in Paris because of its great location. The staff were extremely pleasant and helpful. We don't understand where Paris gets its reputation, everyone was pleasant. We had a great time.

If you want a deluxe hotel this is not it. However, it you want a decent hotel in a really good location, this will fit the bill. You can easily walk to the Louvre, Notre Dame, the Seine, shopping, eating, etc. It is just a short walk to pick up the Hop-On Hop-Off Bus and any of the Grey Line Tours. The rooms are small but certainly adequate. The breakfast is not worth 8 Euros as it is coffee, juice, and rolls. However, for convenience in the morning, the breakfast will do. Probably not only the worst hotel we stayed at on this trip, but the worst on several trips to Europe and in the States. As seen on their website, there are no room photos - the rooms are very small with a full size bed. We had to go to a different floor to use the shower (which was very sketchy and not clean!) and the toliet, which was located in a storage closet along with the mop, cleaning product, and the clean towels stacked on the back of the toliet.
