Hotel Fontana

We had a wonderful 4 night stay from 12th -16th February. We had a wonderful room with a balcony overlooking the sea and the piazza below. In addition we were right in the main square of Amalfi near the Duomo and all the shops and restaurants. The room was spacious and the bed was comfortable, the bathroom clean and tidy, the staff very friendly and helpful and the breakfasts were great - freshly baked bread and cakes from the local bakery washed down with a great capuccino. A great little hotel over looking the harbour and bus depot on the one side and the pedestrian shopping street on the other. Our suite was on the harbour side so we had the wonderful view of the various boats coming and going. Equally important having arrived by bus it was wonderful to simply walk across the street and check in. Equally important for all our side trips along the coast by bus and by boat it was simply crossing the street to the harbour area. It could not have been more convenient. I was lucky enough to be able to check in quite early in the morning at no extra charge, as the previous guests had left, but, I was very disappointed to be given the room adjacent to the reception/breakfast area which also had quite a large tv attached to the wall directly behind my room, so, I asked if I could change rooms. I was told not that night as they were full, but I could the following night, so that was a relief. Right in the middle of town! My room on the top floor overlooked the piazza and from my window I enjoyed a moonlit view of the beautiful Duomo every night. There isn't a better location in Amalfi. The room was also very clean and modern and spacious. But facing the piazza was also very noisy. The din of the crowds begin around 8 a.m. when the first boats of day-trippers arrive, and does not die down until after 11 p.m. when the restaurants are closed. We stayed in this hotel for a week in May 2006. Prior to booking we looked at the trip advisor reviews and based on the reviews we decided to book. However, although the reviews were more or less accurate we could not help feeling that there were a few surprises that we did not anticipate and therefore felt that we should post our own review. We stayed at the Hotel Fontana for 3 nights in March. It is an excellent location in a town square that overlooks the Duomo. Lounna, the front desk receptionist was VERY helpful. She spoke great English and we really relied on her for excursions and general info. The breakfast was good. The room was utilitarian but you cannot beat the price. This hotel is pretty good value taking into account its situation slap bang in the middle of town with rooms overlooking either the main square or the sea. We had a great view from our balcony over the piazza of the church and the room was clean and nicely decorated. It was, however, a little noisy in the square late at night and early in the morning, so a pair of earplugs would be high on my list of essentials. Very good hotel for the price we paid. Simple but nicely decorated, clean, and bright rooms. It is located right on the main square, Piazza Duomo, on one side and the bus stops on the other side. So whichever side your room will be overlooking, you will have either a beautiful view of the piazza or of the sea. Although it is very central, it was surprisingly quiet at night. The breakfast buffet is just average. We would go back again.

I can't believe there's not a heap of reviews for this place! We were put onto it through our Travel Agent in New Zealand and didn't know what to expect. Being on our honeymoon we were greeted by friendly staff and placed in room 105 which opens out to the sea and Main Rd/Central Amalfi. Road noise wasn't a major issue as the road is hardly used after about 10pm. Early morning becomes busier though but never a problem. The hotel is situated on the main square in Amalfi and even though there is a lot of traffic just outside the noise never was enough to disturb our sleep. The room we had was very large, clean and the bed very comfortable. Breakfast was typical of Italy - coffee, juice, pastries etc. There are quite a lot of steps up to the hotel but then so do all the other hotels in Amalfi.
