Domina Home Giudecca

My husband and I were married in Venice in 2004 and we stayed in this hotel. We went back to Venice for our anniversary this year (Sept 2006) and elected to stay in the same hotel. However, as we came back as travellers looking for some luxury and relaxation rather than stressed out wedding planners - we viewed things somewhat differently. Location on Giudecca Island we found nice, as Venice is on its best seen from the water, and you will be spending some time on it, getting around. Hotel is clean and nice looking. Directions on foot from the Vaporetto though are not explained well on their own website. Thanks to other Tripadvisors we found it! I booked this hotel at short notice for 5 nights over the UK Bank Holiday weekend, and despite most of the hotels being booked up, this great hotel still had rooms available and at an incredibly reasonable rate. Having read the reviews on here I didn't hesitate in booking. Giudecca is a lovely quiet area and incredibly handy to explore Venice from. Have just come back from a 4 night stay in Venice. After trawling the web and this website, decided on the Domina Giudecca and was not dissapointed in any way. Directions on the website were perfect and easy to follow. Hotel was in a beautiful little square, very clean, a nice breakfast in the morning and all the staff were polite and informative. We were extremely happy with every aspect of our stay. I would definately recommend this hotel, it was only a short 10 minute boat ride to San Marco, and 5 minutes to get to the main island.... more

Great proximity to the sights-easy access to the other islands. The room was modern, clean and comfortable, but smaller than the pictures seem to indicate. The hotel charges more for a water view-I don't think I would elect to do that again-not much to see. Overall good value, very clean and easy to get around by vaparetto. The drawbacks are the hotel directions from the vaparetto stop, not many places to eat on Giudecca and a little hard to find even with directions. We flew to Treviso airport with Ryanair from London Stanstead. We missed the Ryanair bus from Treviso airport to Venice by 5 minutes, they don't wait very long at all. We were one of the first off the plane, and ran to the bus stop after going to the toilets, too late, we missed it! We then got an autobus ticket from the Tabacchi (Cafe) opposite the airport, they only cost 1 euro each, and a 20 minute ride on a number 6 bus later, and we were at Treviso rail station. Hidden from the hussle and bustle of venice. A vaporetto pass is needed to cross to this real part of Italy. We eat out in the evenings on the local waterfront restraunts.The one at the Zitelle stop(more like a cafe) was particually great. Serving real simple good Italian food, to mainly locals of all ages. Not the over priced, over rich cuisine we expected in venice. No view from the room but spotless and comfortable, breakfast buffet nice. LOCATION AND HOW TO GET THERE (IMPORTANT) Finding this hotel is important as it is not located in an easy to reach part of town, particularly if you don't arrange a pick up service from the hotel, which we didn't. The hotel is located in a quiet backwater on a residential island but within 10 minutes of st mark's square and with fantastice views of the main island. The rooms (we upgraded to a deluxe room with a canal view and terrace) are small but well furnished and the views nice but nothing to write home about. The shower however is superb and the breakfasts set you up for the day! This hotel is small, friendly and pleasant and most things in previous reviews are spot on. However, we have one major gripe. A party of 6 of us went for 'Canevarle'. We had pre-booked a private excursion on our first day, through the hotel for 400 euros and was told it would be about 4 hours. What we got was a taxi with an english speaking (almost) driver and not a guide. The driver was friendly enough and encouraged us to take lunch mid trip.
