The Staff Need to Cheer Up!!!
We stayed at the Rex Blue Heron from 17/01/04-27/01/04. The room was average although our ceiling fan did not work - nice breeze though so didn't matter too much. The hotel is on an absolutely fabulous beach - the only hotel on it, so loads of space and no probs getting a lounger. Most of the staff at the hotel seemed to have major attitude problems and treated us as if we were a major inconvenience, this includes the manager. Admittedly, the bar staff were lovely, very chatty and always helpful and friendly - especially a chap called... more
Great Beach, Hotel has some problems!
My wife and I stayed at the Blue Heron from 1/10/04 thru 1/23/04. We chose the Blue Heron, like most of you, by reviews and price. Our experience was that we loved the beach; however we changed rooms 3x for one reason or another. Towels were always in short supply. They had to wash the towels and return the same to the rooms. One day we waited until 7PM for towels. Meals were generally very English with both lunch and dinner very heavy meals and mostly over cooked. Breakfast was O.K.; however the milk was always powered and there was no... more
Loved the Rex Blue Heron
We spent the week of Jan. 10-17, 2004 at the Rex Blue Heron and we loved it. It was a small resort, only 64 rooms and set on a beautiful and secluded beach. Beach chairs were readily available and the beach was not at all crowded. We are used to the mega cruise ships and giant all-inclusives where you can't get a drink or beach chair and there are massive crowds. Food was good, breakfast is cooked to order and lunch and dinner is a buffet, and there is afternoon tea. There is not an over abundance of food as with most all inclusives so we... more
Escape from Castle rex n stein
On arrival at the Rex we were greeted by a guard in a grey uniform, at first I thought we were being checked into colditz. The room was clean and functional, that was it !!! I had seen better rooms in B&B's here in the uk. The food was bad news all round, burger chips and sausages hhhhmmmm dont we get that here?? maybe I have it all wrong if I holiday here in the UK maybe Ill get Antiguan food. The staff really did look like they wanted to be beamed up and taken away from it all, at the beginning of our holiday they were quite friendly,... more
beautiful beach, mediocre hotel and horrible food
My husband and I picked this hotel after reading all the tripadvisor ratings. The beach at the hotel was one of the prettiest on the island, uncrowded, long and secluded. We opted for the all inclusive because it was not that much more expensive on expedia. However, one should know that only breakfast is cooked to order. Breakfast is decent--eggs, pancakes, french toast. Lunch and dinner are truly mediocre at best. If you are expecting, tasty fresh food,or any decent service, you will be sorely disappointed. The lunch and dinner are bland,... more
An OK resort
We picked the Blue Heron from reviews on the web and were not disappointed with the result. We spent 4 days here prior to crusing on the Seadream Yacht Club (this cruise is a must) and enjoyed the very private beach and the excellent staff. We had a smallish oceanfront room with a balcony and a beautiful view (even from the bathroom). It had AC and a TV and was adequate. The grounds are quite nice and the whole complex was quiet at night. The food was average and could use some Caribbean influence. It was basically all buffet except at... more
Not bad for first vacation
the rex was a good vacation spot for our first trip together. However please be aware the resort is very quiet and tends not to be a hoping night spot. It offers the best beach in Antigua and you must take the public transportation to avoid high priced cabs that cost to much. Their is a bus stop right outside the hotel. Due not book trips at the travel desk DUE YOUR reaserch before to avoid getting ripped off. I.E. We booked a Jolly roger boat trip and were told the boat would pick us up outside on the beach in front of the hotel... more
What a fantastic holiday
I took a chance and went to Antigua alone, staying at the Rex Blue Heron was a delight. The staff at the hotel are very friendly and the service was 1st class. The hotel sits right on the beach with excellent views of the island, every day was a dream. No problems with nabbing a sunbed, the pace was slow and relaxing which was just what I needed. I met other single people at the hotel and friendly couples which made my stay even more enjoyable, by the end of our holiday everyone knew everyone because the hotel was so small and... more
Get away from it all, ave it !!
We visited Antigua on the 4th Oct 2003 and chose the Blue Heron after reading all the reviews posted here. I would say the hotel is fairly basic but the setting is perfect and the small size of the hotel makes for a very friendly atmosphere (we were off season which meant it was probably quieter than usual). The staff were friendly and always willing to help. The entertainment was a little repetitive but the entertainers themselves were great giving everyone a laugh. The food was far better than I expected not the normal cold meat buffet or... more
Not what we expected from all-inclusive...
My husband and I visitied Antigua October 16-21, 2003 for a late honeymoon. After much deliberation we decided on the Rex Blue Heron to stay, based on all the good reveiws on this web-site. However, we arrived there late (8:30 pm) on a Thursday evening and when we went to the restaurant to get dinner, we were greeted with frowns because they shut down dinner at 9pm. We arrived in jeans and had to take the time to go and change into "proper attire" for dinner! Dinner was "okay" at the very most. After dinner, we sat with other guests for a... more
