Melia Azul Ixtapa reviews

1 / 10
Nov 2011, Frequent traveller around

Ok. The beach is the most horrible I have ever seen. Its mud, not sand. Trust me . Alas, dirty and with vendors bothering. Pool Full with kids.... Not the Educated class. Not An All inclusive , lots of things with extra charge. (like good service) Food is worst class.... more

Hated it
I booked the Melia Azul through Continental Vacations. They told me it was a great property. After I had booked it, I read the review on this site. I called back Continental Vacations and was told that they only got great response from people who stayed there. I arrived there Feb 10, 2003. Upon checking in, I was overtaken by the amount of children running rampant through the property. Most of them were not being supervised. It was as if I was staying at a sleep over camp. I purposely booked my vacation for the first week of... more
reviews all wrong its great
food was ok but try local shops and eat lobster and steak or fish . I gained 12# and usally dont. go fishing we caught sailfish ,dolphin, yellow tail . they will take you to island in back of resort on beach grill and cook with drinks and all. beachs all have natural black and white sand mixed not much to look at but that is what the tide brings in ,if you want to screw on soft sand go to your room or else where. people nicer than keywest, butthamas, careibean or hawaii. dont go all inclusive, use local resteraunts downtown five dllar cab... more
The Melia Azul was GREAT!
I just returned yesterday from spending 7 nights and 8 days at The Melia Azul in Ixtapa (January 15-22, 2003). There were 6 adults in our party and we thought it was great! I had read the negative reviews posted on this site (suspiciously written anonymously I might add) and was understandably concerned. I am writing this to tell everyone that my fears were completely unfounded. It seems that most of the negative reviews I read were in regards to the food. We ate in both fine dining restaurants and were very impressed! The main... more
Don't Go
If you're looking for a hotel with bad bad bad bad food, hard beds, an overpriced hotel store, uninspired rooms, lame, corny entertainment, an ugly beach with rough sand and murky water and awful "Gourmet" food in the special restaurants, Melia Azul is the place to go! DO NOT HONEY MOON THERE!
A wonderful surprise
I had read the reviews just before heading to the Melia Azul for New Years 2002 and was somewhat worried. We have traveled all over and had been to Mexico 6 times in the last few years. This was our first trip to Ixtapa. We were delighted to find that the hotel was wonderful. The rooms were very clean and spacious. We did change rooms to get further away from the construction. (that could be a problem). We also had to push to get other rooms, but were finally accomodated. We had a great balcony with a wonderful view of Ixtapa Island and... more
Over-rated!
My wife and I stayed one week at this resort last March, 2002. We have been to a half-dozen All-Inclusive and several EP plan resorts thru-out Mexico and the Carib. over the last 10 yrs. We think we know a bit about resort hotel ratings and suspected our booking at the Melia for the same price as the equally-rated Las Brisas (EP) might prove "too good to be true". It only took one look at the beach and one bite of our first "gourmet" meal to realize it was (not true). We tried the other fine-dining restaurant with the same... more
was just fine, thank you!
Let me start by saying we just spent Thanksgiving 2002 at the Melia Azul Ixtapa and had a wonderful time! We were a large group with many children and we were a bit concerned about activities and food. We needn't have been. Every day we all spent hours at the absolutely wonderful pools. There was a separate kids pool, with water slides and very shallow water, where all the kids had a blast! Too bad for the adults that they weren't allowed on the water slides! The other 3 pools were all set up so that even there the kids could have fun. In... more
Not Worth It!!
I just got back from the Melia Azul Ixtapa. We stayed there Nov 30 through Nov 5 2002. Before we left for our vacation, I read all the reviews here. I was sceptical of the negative comments becuase I had stayed at other nice Melia Hotels before (Playa Conchal - Costa Rica). But I must say... all the critical comments posted here are/were right on. Let me give you my review. I will rank things on a scale of 1 to 5, 5 being the best. Lets start with the positive. Swimming Pools - 5. they are clean, beatiful, large, refreshing... more
Not Bad!!
The Melia Azul was beautiful. The grounds were maintained nicely. The employees were great and very accomodating. We originally didn't like our room, so they compromised. The food was prepared great, but it got a little boring after a week. I highly recommend the special restaurant, The Oyster Bar, it was fantastic, but bring the bug spray. I got eaten alive by the mosquitos. The activities and entertainment were fun, maybe could be beter, but these people try really hard to please and work many hours to serve us. The beach was bad, but... more
The Bad Reviews Are Wrong
The bad reviews on this site are completely wrong. We just returned from ten days at the Melia Azul Ixtapa and had a wonderful time. Our group consisted of 14 people, including 8 children (three of them 2 years old and the rest under age 9). The food was absolutely fine. We all ate everything including raw fruits and vegetables at every meal. No one got the least bit sick, and some in the group have sensitive stomachs. It's nice to have a buffet available pretty much all the time. Our group is used to going to Club Med every year,... more
