Hotel Violino d'Oro - a little gem!
We really enjoyed our stay here last week (march2006) & found it very god value. We had a standard room (€100 a night) that was pretty much the same as our friends, who paid €20 euros more for a superior one with a view of the square, ours overlooked a little back street & was fine –we didn’t go to Venice to sit in our hotel room-but it was very pleasant if you wanted to do so. The location is exellent, some very posh shops nearby (Prada etc), nice for window shopping on the way back from an evening out at one of the... more
Best kept secret in Venice
If you don't want to know about the best kept secret in Venice, then stop reading right here. Otherwise, read up! This hotel was the best hotel in our European trip. An absolute gem with true Venetian charm. The location: Cannot be beat. The hotel is extremely easily accessed off of the San Marco/Vallresso boat line (line 82 and/or line 1). Only a 1 minute walk (so if you have luggage, it is not a problem hauling them to the hotel). Also, located on a small canal which off-shoots from the grand canal. The gondeliers in front are not... more
Fantastic Hotel!
We stayed at the Violino D'oro for one night in early June, which we had booked through veniceby. The receptionist was very helpful and after asking for a bigger room as ours was very small, we were upgraded to what was obviously their best room which had windows looking over the River San Moise and the small square. An excellent hotel with little personal touches which were really nice, especially, the little part outside the rooms. Unlike many of the other reviewers, we enjoyed the noise outside as we felt it was a touch of Venice and very... more
Loved this hotel
My friend and I stayed here in July. It has a great location just a block or so from St. Mark's square. Some very nice but very expensive deisgner shops are right next to the hotel so you know it's in a good area. We liked being on the little square with the gondoliers outside - it was how Venice should be. The room was quite nice and very clean. We needed two twin beds instead of a king (our booking error) and they graciously made the change for us when we arrived. They also helped us get the train schedule from the internet for our next... more
Nice location
WE stayed here for 3 nights. OUr room overlooked the canal. If you leaned out your window too far you would fall in the canal. We thought is was fun and interesting to watch the people floating on by and alot of singing. The hotel is old but very clean. We were let out of the wter taxi on the opposite side of the hotel and to drag our luggage up and down stairs over the bridge. We asked the hotel desk if they anyone to help us and they did not. Our room was small and old. The hallway was bright with pretty light fixtures. The bed were so... more
Disability friendly
The hotel is well located only a few minutes from St Marks and the nearest vaporetto stop (which involves crossing a bridge). A lot of thought has gone into the layout of this hotel to make it friendly to wheelchair users in a city which offers challenges. Ramps up to the entrance/internal lift and into the breakfast area and a generously proportioned room with one of the biggest bathrooms I've encountered in world travel. Also properly fitted up with grab rails, shower area with seat and a raised WC. Highly effective airconditioning (yes,... more
Nice hotel, but...
We just returned from our European Vacation where we went to Paris, Venice, Cinque Terra in Italy, and Rome. This hotel in Venice was nice, clean and had a great location; however, the air conditioning left a lot to be desired. Of course we were in Venice at the end of June and the heat and humity were pretty harsh, but their air conditioning was not working. The hotel claims to have air conditioning and that was one of the main reasons why we chose this hotel. When we inquired about the air, their response was to just turn up the... more
Good location but really really noisy
The location of the Violin d Oro in Venice is superb. You can step out your door and be near Harry's Bar and the best stores in Venice. It is acrros a narrow canal from the Bauer and you can go sit on their terrace. The down side is that the gondolier's have a station right below the hotel where many boats sit and wait and the gondoliers chat all night. If you understand Italian, the remarks might be censored. I would not return there. The rooms (even the best ones) are tiny and cramped. Spring for a four star hotel in Venice. Also,... more
Nice hotel right in the center of Venice
We stayed at the Violino D'Oro May 2nd-May 5th of 2005. The hotel staff was very friendly and welcoming. They even gave us a complimentary bottle of champagne, which was a nice surprise on our arrival night. Our room was not huge, but was quite nice for a hotel in Italy. Our room had a private entrace to a lovely little patio overlooking a canal and a gondolier stand. We were in Venice to be married, so had several deliveries and a couple of visitors to the hotel. The staff was very good in accommodating us and bringing our deliveries... more
Great find
Went to Venice for one night with my daughter and found this little gem - right across a skinny canal from the Bauer, a stone's throw from St. Marks. Although only 3 stars it was MUCH BETTER than the 3-star La Residenza I stayed in in Florence (one day I have to figure out that star rating system). They gave me a deal of 100 euros/nite for 2 nights for double room with bath (February) including breakfast, but since we only wanted one night they charged us 150 euros. Still a bargain for this slightly dowdy, but charming hotel perfectly... more
