Fantastic hotel in the heart of the old town
from DavidGHorne
We absolutely loved this hotel. Rooms very much as expected- clean and simple- based on reviews here. The breakfast may seem spartan, but is actually pretty average by Italian standards, and the coffee is made to order- which is excellent- and different from some other Italian hotels I've stayed in where you have awful stuff from a self-service machine. Also, you can cheaply buy extras if you've not had enough. On one day, I bought an extra coffee and an extra croissant (latter for my partner!) and was oinly charged a euro for the two-...

Alghero Experience
from FIRSTTIMEWITHOUTKIDS
Just spent a week at the San Francesco. A lovely tranquil hotel located right in the heart of the old town of Alghero. The staff are very helpful and friendly. Hotel is a well preserved building with breakfast taken within the cloisters overlooking the old courtyard of the monestary with the church of San Francesco attached next door. Lots of bars, restaurants & shops nearby. The beach is a 15 - 20 min stroll from the old town. If you prefer all the amenities and trappings of a modern hotel then the San Francesco is not for you. There...

Hotel San Francesco is a good choice for Alghero
from GAC
I am happy to be the first American to post a review of the Hotel San Francesco on this site. We spent three nights in early May 2007 in a "squeaky clean" double room on the second floor, with a window facing the inner courtyard. The room was very small, and one had to be careful not to bump into the corner of the wood bed frame when crossing the room. The furniture itself was simple, sober, but in excellent condition, nearly new. The mattress was extremely hard. Bedsheets were new and of good quality. There was a small and...

unique hotel in the unique old - town
from PaisleyPaul
In a converted 1300s convent affiliated to the chiesa, this is the only hotel in the castellated Centro Storico. Rooms are cool enough in Summer due tot he high 'admittance' and shading of the old building, all rooms en suite. Breakfast served in the cloisters. That is pretty much it, some people seem to begrudge the absence (other than the brakfast bar) of televisions (Satellite dishes all over the cloisters and core-cut through walls for cabling, anyone?) but it provides a uniquely central and serene stay. Ten to fifteen minutes walk...

great location
from cliftonNottingham
I stayed here for 3 nights in May.The room was basic [no T.V.] but clean and with a decent shower. The hotel was quiet. The staff were welcoming and some spoke English. The location is superb as you breakfast on the first level of the church cloister. I agree with another reviewer that some people might like a more substantial breakfast. When you step outside the door, you are right in the centre of the old town, convenient for the sea front, the marina and the buses. I thought that it was very good value. A hotel for those who want a...

A Wonderful Oasis
from wrenBakewell
We had 5 nights here at the end of February/ beginning of March and found it a wonderful experience. The room was basic but charming and immaculately clean. (Just a word of warning to the large in stature - our shower, though very efficient , was tiny)We were very active during the days, exploring our surroundings, and loved being able to return to this calm oasis right in the middle of the Old Town before strolling the few steps to as many restaurants as we could want - a stunning location. The breakfast was good - excellent coffee, a...

Mixed feelings
from chaplondon
This hotel certainly has character. If you are looking for a basic clean hotel you probably couldnt do better. Central location, lovely basic rooms and a wonderfully unusual setting. The downsides - you do feel like you are in a converted monestary. The sound insulation is poor and it does have a slightly cold feel about the place. The breakfast is poor, mainly because again the slight lack of charm about it. Its a really tough call whether it should be recommended. If you want clean central and something a little different then...

Beautiful hotel, great room, helpful staff, fantastic location & good price!
from cuyocksol
Having read a few reviews on the internet my partner and I were in two minds whether to book this hotel (which sounded interesting - a former monastery/convent, and in the heart of the old town) due to some people complaining about poor service or funny cramped rooms, etc. Well we did book it in the end, and are very glad we did. For around the same price (or slightly more) we could've got a more modern (and faceless) hotel a bit further from the centre of Alghero, but in the end we loved the charismatic atmosphere of the Hotel San...

Central but Spartan
from Kingmaker
As central as you can get. Within walking distance of lots of great restaurants and shops. Friendly and the situation round the courtyard is lovely although with only a couple of exceptions the rooms don't look out over it. The downside is the rooms are very basic and very noisy with clattering shutters and an austere feel. We were only there for a few days and it suited us fine but I think we will find somewhere different next time.
Great location
from md5
Hotel San Francesco has an excellent location in the heart of the medieval town of Alghero. It is very clean and has pleasant staff, however the room we were allocated was quite dark and a narrow squeeze around the bed which was difficult if you needed to go to the loo in the night. The rooms have absolutely no frills,no TV, no hairdryer and no mirror apart from the one in our badly lit bathroom. The beds were hard and quite uncomfortable.Breakfast was a mean affair, a notice on the wall informs the hungry guest that you may have one hot...
