Antica Locanda al Gambero

This hotel has a super location, halfway between the Rialto Bridge and St. Mark's Sq. Their directions for finding the hotel were very clear, in retrospect! After asking a few directions from a post card stand, we found Calle Bembo, and incredibly narrow passageway! The staff were very helpful with directions and bookings etc. Our first room was very small (a twin room ) and when we asked, they were aboe to give us a more convenient room at the same price! Spent two wonderful nights in the quadruple room with our 17 and 14 year old grandchildren. Can't say enough wonderful things about the hotel. The location was superb, the staff was super friendly and spoke english, free internet in the lobby, comfortable-clean room, beautiful bathroom, delicous breakfast - all for a very reasonable price! We highly recommend this hotel for an enjoyable stay in Venice.

Great hotel, location and price but not if you are in room 102. The reception, computer room and breakfast room are all located on the first floor. The ground floor is a restaurant. The only room on the first floor is 102. When I made the phone reservation I was repeatedly asked is the first floor alright with you? I ask whether the room was quiet and whether there were any problems with it and the reply was it was a great room. How was I to know the layout of the first floor. Just got back 2 days ago from Venice. What a beautiful place!!! We stayed at the Al Gambero. The hotel was in the perfect location, conveniently located between the rialto bridge and saint mark's square. There was one problem--no elevator! This made it a problem lugging our baggage up and down three flights of stairs! There are porters to help out, but they definitely strain a lot. We had a great view overlooking a canal! Just beware that I had a reservation directly with the hotel for 210 Euros. I later discovered that through Venere I could reserve with instant confirmation for the rate of 155 Euros for the same date (they would have had to honor it should I have booked it). Wanting to give them the courtesy, instead of double booking it through Venere I emailed them asking them if they would honor that rate or if I should book through Venere. They did not respond to my email until the next day, however in the meantime they changed the rate on Venere... more

My daughter and I spent 5 nights in two single rooms in this hotel in February 2005. The staff was very helpful. It was great to have the free internet connection in the lobby. Staff arranged a free boat trip to Murano Island at a non-scheduled time. The location was absolutely perfect. Close to everything but very quiet. Rooms were small but very nicely decorated. The bathrooms had been remodeled and were excellent.

My bf and I stayed for 2 nights in late December. The room was small with a small bathroom but very clean. It also had a tiny balcony with a view of a canal, that had heavenly gondoliers serenading tourists. the staff could have been a little more helpful with the unexpected aqua alta ordeal we were not prepared for (rain boots). the location was very central right in between piazza san marco and the rialto bridge. breakfasts were continental with fresh cafe. the internet they provided was a BIG plus for us. they don't have an... more

We stayed at this hotel for 12nights in martch04 and we loved it.Great location,everything is in walking distance.Good breakfast and very cute little rooms,clean with nice bathrooms.Ask for the room with the balcony.

We loved the hotel. Thought it was in a perfect central location. The rooms are small like most European rooms, but was clean, neat. Rooms we had overlooking a bridge and canal were nice. Staff was very friendly and helpful and spoke English. Liked the internet access that was in the sitting room. Breakfast in the morning was more of continental style, but very nice. Good strong coffee. Since we found a good place, we would stay there again in a second.

We stayed here three nights at the end of August this year and would love to stay there again. We had a nicely decorated, clean room w/ a view of the canal. At night we could here the gondoliers singing from below. We could easily walk from St. marks and other sites to the hotel. The internet access and cold A/C was a nice plus, as was the bath tub for warm soaks after very long walks. And yes there is a very cute guy that works the front desk w/ dark hair.
