Great Location but Smells of Damp
We stayed in a White Sand room(Junior Suite). The hotel is trying to be hip and does have an amazing location and a great restaurant on the beach, however the rooms have no ventilation and the smell of damp is overpowering, which is only going to get worse. We did ask for a plug in air freshener but the staff didn't care, they couldnt even be bothered to turn up on our pre-arranged transfer from the airport. The rooms are very dark, plasma televisions, square toilets etc but being cool is useless if you dont have enough light to have a... more
I really wanted to like this hotel but.....
My husband and I stayed the Mosquito Beach from Jan 13-17. The exterior of the hotel is gorgeous--very beautifully designed. Many people stopped by to ask about the property while we were there because it is so stunning from the outside. Our room was on the second floor with a balcony and a partial ocean view. The balcony was really nice but unfortunately it was the only thing nice about the room. When we checked in it was nighttime and we noticed a very musty smell in the room. I had dismissed it as just being in a humid climate but when we... more
Small, Cute, and Clean
We stayed at the Mosquito Beach Hotel in Playa Del Carmen, January 13-17th, 2007. We booked thru Expedia.com, everything was in order when we arrived. We didn't take a taxi there, we got a ride. The only problem with this is that we couldn't drive to the front door because it is on the other side of 5th Avenue. The police let us cross when we told them where we were staying and had lots of luggage but it was difficult trying to get to the street. We ended up walking about 2 blocks with 5 pieces of luggage. We didn't mind, some people... more
Overpriced and Unfriendly
After viewing pictures of this hotel online, we decided to splurge and booked a White Sands room (the most expensive room). The online description (with pictures) of this room was very simple; ocean and garden view, patio or terrace upon availability (depending on which floor you are on). Our room was very close to the beach, on the first floor. Our only window was our door, and it faced the hotel room across from us. It was impossible to see the ocean, even from our patio. There is techno music blasting on the beach from 10 am to 6... more
Beautiful, with Flaws
My wife and I just returned from a very relaxing vacation in Playa del Carmen. We spent 4 nights at Mosquito Beach. Being an Architect, I really wanted to fall in love with this hotel. The exterior is visually stunning, a nice balance of a modern European aesthetic and tropical simplicity, with very well designed (although maybe a bit trendy) public spaces, including the pool, courtyard, and beachfront café. The rooms themselves, however, are disappointing. Maybe you would consider painting the interior walls black if the hotel was located... more
The real review on Playa Del Carmen
In the late 80's, Playa Del Carmen had a population of 1,000. Soon Europeans started visiting, some deciding to invest and create the next hotspot. Small mom and pop boutique hotels were built creating a relaxed, quaint, tropic getaway. Now, 20 years later, Playa has a population of 100,000, and is growing over 20% a year. The mega resort corps are coming in, buying up the small beach properties and the quaint face is changing. Over 200 restaurants line the 5th Ave, about 1 block from the beach. Nestled between 5th Ave and... more
Thanks for our romantic stay!
We had a great stay at Mosquito Beach Hotel. What a great location, and the hotel is visually beautiful. It is small and quaint, and everybody there was extremely helpful, and always had a smile. The beach is beautiful in front and one of the better stretches of beach in the area. We did not try the restaurant (way to many awesome one's and can't try them all!) but it is right on the beach. Granted, the rooms are a bit dark at night and could probably use another light, and the bathrooms need some work, in regards to faded paint... more
Sleeping in a Coffin
We prefer boutique hotels that are adult only and chose this hotel because it was on the beach but the rooms are so horrible we had to leave after two days. The walls in the rooms are black (kid you not), the floors are dark stained floors (that smell and rub off on your feet), the light is so poor you cannot see your clothes or read in the room, there is nowhere to sit other than your bed or outside on your deck. The bathrooms are trying so hard to be hip they are humourous. Square white toilets, square sinks, and black tiled showers... more
don't waste your money or vacation
If you are foolish enough to secure a room here, you should know that after 6PM this and other beach hotels are not accessible by automobile. So despite several organizing phone calls to the hotel before we arrived, the requirement of carrying luggage several blocks was not welcome news, especially in the rain. This was not helped by the inept staff who further informed that there is no bellboy after 7PM (it was 8PM) and she had no other suggestions. Our room had no towels and soap on check in. Half of our showers were with cold water. If... more
A Fabulous Holiday Present to Myself!
I arrived at Mosquito Beach on December 19 for a week over the Christmas holiday. The hotel perfectly met my needs - a single woman traveling alone, seeking a little quiet time and relaxation. It was a small, friendly and non-intrusive environment that was right on the beach and convenient to a fairly cosmopolitan area with a variety of non-American, non-chain establishments. The rooms: I was in 311, above the pool area. It was large enough for me - able to unpack everything in the closet, could accommodate myself in the bathroom... more
