Melia de Mar

This is an absolutely fabulous hotel that lives up to its 5* status.We will most certainly return here in the near future.

I read the previous reviews with some trepidation as we had booked a long weekend at short notice before checking, and to be honest i am glad i didn't check first. I don't know what somepeople want from a holiday hotel but i found it to be perfect (well very nearly). I stay in 5 star hotels all over the world for business and pleasure and have to say this is one of those 'holiday' 5 star hotels which does not dissapoint like so many others do. After reading the past two reviews I was a little worried about our stay but I was pleasantly surprised. The hotel doesn't look like much driving up to it but once you are shown to your room all reservations disappear. The communal areas have not been updated but they will be refurbished by 2008. Meanwhile the rooms are beautiful and all have gorgeous balconies with sun lounges. We were travelling with our 3 month old baby and the maids were excellent. The hotel is in a lovely suburban location about 5 km's (or 3 miles) from downtown Palma. The private beach at the hotel is just some rocks with rough seas but there is a nice beach, 5 min. walk away. The hotel exterior looks worn out and needs help and maintenance. The rooms are nicely done up in a very modern and contemporary style and especially the lights. You require at least a day to figure out how to operate the lights. Just returned from a four day break at the Melia de Mar in Illetas. Here are the headlines: - Food is extremely poor. The breakfast is good but the evening meal is shockingly bad. Frozen food. No fresh ingredients. It really spoils the experience. - Beach/poolside facilities - are no more than mediocre. There are deckchairs on a paved area - it is crowded and claustrophobic. There is no real beach. - Rooms - The rooms are very tired. The plumbing is problematic. Overall - very disappointing. I would not return.

Just come back from 9 nights here. An excellent choice for a quiet and "be spoiled" holiday. The location is fantastic ie being on a sort of headland and right on the sea/rock front. Wonderful and ever changing views of Palma Bay and the boats. Always lots of sunbeds and always excellent service from the pool staff and hotel staff in general. Lovely room and very hi tech with sequence lighting and great facilities. Yes it is expensive to eat there and quite limited as well. Best go out if you want variety!There were a couple of niggles... more

The very first impression of the hotel was not the best as the front of the hotel is quite old and is very 70ties like. But then once you are inside, have discovered the rooms, the garden and the pool area, you will see that it was largely worth booking this hotel. Just in front of the sea, small private beach... 4 km outside from the palma center / 15 euros by taxi. A good experience !!!

We have just come back from a 10 night stay at the Melia de Mar. Superb hotel although it was a little warm - that may have been due to the fact that I arrived at the hotel with my Ugg boots on in May! The reception staff could not have been more helpful, on the down side the hotel is very expensive to eat in, one lunch time I decided to have strawberries and cream which worked out at £12. Another down side is that it can be a bit on the noisy side in the mornings, the cleaning staff are 'very loud' and seem to love banging doors... more

This is an excellent hotel just out of Palma (but close) with fantastic grounds and a private beach (small). The room are larger than most and all face the bay of Palma and are all the same size, large - with a separate bathroom and toilet. Plus they each have a room to store ALL your cases and bags! Try to get a room on an upper floor for the best views or lower if you want subtle shade from the trees. This hotel is wonderful if you're looking for a great place to stay just outside of Palma (if you like, the bus into Palma is right outside the hotel). The room & views were amazing. The breakfast alone is worth the stay. Very friendly staff, good tennis, great food, excellent swimming...we couldn't have been happier! There is a fantastic restaurant around the corner from the hotel, right on a little beach, which is a great way to spend an afternoon in the sun. Melia de Mar is well worth a visit.
