Great if you are looking for a cheap and cheerful clubbing holiday.......
from DrewCumbria
As the previous reviews state, this is not the hotel if you want a quiet break as it is literally yards from the resorts clubs which stay open until breakfast, and due to building work even closer, is noisy during the day, whilst we were there this week a stone breaker was giving an impersonation of a metallic woodpecker from 8:30am until 3:30pm. Regarding the food, we were half board and after the first breakfast ate elswhere!. The rooms however are adequate with aircon and were kept clean, with the staff being very helpful and friendly....

Wish I'd read the reviews first...
from MissyW13
We have just returned from a 3 night stay at the Hotel Bernard. Unfortunately we had a room on the 3rd floor that backed on to the bars/clubs that have been mentioned in the other reviews. After the 1st sleepless night we asked to be moved but were told the hotel was full and were recommended to get some ear plugs - sadly these didn't help! The breakfast was OK but not great and the staff OK but not excessively helpful. The cleanliness of the room was patchy and we did see a huge beetle in one of the corridors one afternoon!<br...

Worst hotel I have stayed in Malta.
from roger2006
As stated already very very noisy even with double glazing do not take children. Loud music till 4 in the morning every day. If room is on 2nd floor on right hand side have to keep cutains closed as people at the bar opposite the alley can see in the room. Went easy dining but choice was so bad, salad or soup, beef or fish followed by melon. Soup was vegetable but tasted like beef. The main course came up cold. I could choose from the menu but would have to pay the going price, with no reduction as I had already paid for easy diner. Floor in...

Management response from Bas2309
I refer to the above mentioned review and would like to comment as follows:-
It is clearly mentioned anywhere that our Hotel is located in the heart of Malta's entertainment area, we have a beautiful sandy beach 50m away from the hotel and within walking distance one can find a shopping centre, bowling alley, 16 screen cinema complexn and numerous bars and restaurants.
Most of our rooms are double glazed keeping most of the noise out, alternatively we also provide rooms at the back of the Hotel where one will not experience any noise at all. Furthermore we have installed brand new bathrooms in all the rooms, installed electronic door locks, changed all carpets in the corridors, refurbished all our rooms, re-painted the rooms and corridors, changed all curtains and bedspreads and we are still refurbishing the public areas.
Once again I would like to mention that the we are located in Malta's entertainment area and therefore we might not the suitable hotel for certain people.
If one should have any questions please feel free to email me directly on sebastiaan@hotelbernard.com.mt

Disappointing
from A TripAdvisor Member
Firstly this hotel is not in st julians bay but 10 minutes up the road in st georges bay which is no where near as nice. It is placed right next to a very noisy strip of bars including a gentlemans club so as you can imagine there were alot of seedy men hanging around. Some of these were open until 5am so there was alot of noise even with the double glazing. I would definately not rate this hotel as a four star- the rooms were ok and the food was nice but the roof top pool was very small and very tatty -in need of refurbishment. I...

Worst 4-stars of my life
from A TripAdvisor Member
This hotel is dirty. I was asked to pay the room in advance (first time in my life). Bathroom without soap or toilet paper. The shower was broken and it took two days to fix. I'd never recommend it. I can't understand how they got 4-stars. In Italy that would be a 1-star motel.
Would not advise unless you are a young language student
from A TripAdvisor Member
I was rather surprised that a '4 star' hotel did not mention at any stage that it is really a slightly upmarket hostel during the summer months to 12-16 year old European language students. During the 4 nights that we were there, we were awakened every night by a combination of French and Italian kids, running through the corriders till all hours, banging on each others doors and generally having no consideration for the other guests. The night that finally prompted us to complain was when they set the fire alarm off at 3.30 in the morning...

Much Improved
from A TripAdvisor Member
I found this hotel rather good, and judging by some of the other reviews it would seem that it has improved a lot recently. The rooms were well equipped and clean, the staff were friendly and the breakfast was good. The location is an issue - its smack in the middle of Maltas liveliest nightlife. We kept the double glazing closed and we slept OK.
ok but no 4 star
from mikeg
just back with my son from bernard hotel and thoroughly enjoyed our visit.everything you need on your doorstep.beach, bars, restaurants and night clubs, if your that way inclined as my son was.can be a bit noisey friday and saturday nights, but good double glassing takes care of that, and our room was right next to main thoroughfair.as for the hotel its seen better days and could be doing with a lick of paint, but we had no complaints. our room was cleaned everyday, staff were really pleasant and the breakfasts were pretty good.i would...

Great if you like staying in a Russian Youth Hostel!
from A TripAdvisor Member
We stayed in this four star hotel in Malta in 2003 and were terribly disappointed. I notice this year it appears in the Thompson Brochure and would like visitors to know that through the summer school holidays the hotel takes Russian Students who are learning English. Whilst we were there they constantly ran around late at night banging doors and shouting. The very small swimming pool on the roof had the lights hanging off and and was generally very tatty. We did complain but nothing was done. The restaurant and bar staff were very...

Try to avoid if possible
from Gags
Stayed at the Hotel Bernard, with my girlfriend in May 2004 - I know finally writing this review a year later! This hotel is basically OK, but it is not a 4 star, even though it has an official sign from the Maltese Tourist Board in reception saying it is! I would agree with the other reviews here, that the hotel is right on an allaeyway between the two main nightlife areas and there is noise up to 6am most nights. This place will be a new Ibiza in a few years and at least the beer is still quite cheap, before the dreaded Euro gets...
