We had an excellent 2 weeks. Very impressive lobby. Our room was spacious with a huge king size bed. The swimming pools were lovely and there were 7 to choose from. Though there were a few steps around the resort which isn't ideal if you're not very mobile. Food was good,... more

Booked last minute, arrived at airport to find they don't even have us on their guest list, so they made us wait in the pouring rain for about 30 mins, while every body else was on the coach. Arrived at hotel, not on their guest list, so waited another 30 mins, not a good... more

So good there isn't a suitable title!
I went to Sun Village Beach Resort for 2 weeks (April 16-May 1) and had the time of my life! I traveled with my family (mom, dad, sister, brother) my best friend, my sister's boyfriend, my mom's cousin, wife and their son. The resort was absolutely gorgeous. We all agree that it was the best vacation we've been on. The food was excellent, many restaurants to choose from and I applaud them all. The people were so friendly and not because they had to, they were all very genuine. My friend and I both learned 3 of their dances and the guys there burnt us a CD so we could come back to Canada and show everyone. The entertainment was awesome, every night they had something going on, I got to sing Karaoke twice, it was very fun. The beach is beautiful, lots of shops to go in, but remember to make them take your price... believe me, they will! I was very pleased with the pools, they were so relaxing. The rooms were okay but we barely spent anytime in there anyway, considering the weather and all of the stuff to do. There are some stairs but after filling up on the food I was grateful for some exercise, lol. There was a club right in the resort called Opus and it's ladies night every night, plus a club a little off the resort called The Hurricane. They were both very good. We went to Puerto Plata for two days to go shopping and we also took a funny bike (quad) ride and deep sea fishing. The best excursion was going to the waterfalls, that was an experience I will NEVER forget... we got to climb the waterfalls with a guide and then slide or jump down them. It was a a total blast. We went for two weeks and it wasn't nearly enough. We're planning to go back in 2 years and I'm very excited - I would go back to the exact same resort because I was VERY pleased with it. I highly recommend Sun Village, if you're planning to go, be ready to have a first-rate, outstanding time! Awesome Job Sun Village... I had the best time ever!
most relaxed ive ever been
i have just returned from a week in the sun village in cofresi. Well i was very nervous having read some of the reviews but i can tell you if your looking to relaxe this is the daddy for the price.Good points : There are so many but the pools are fantastic and the people are very friendly.Bad points: they dont have a very good idea on how to keep food hot which unfortunateley gave me a nasty stomach upset but i struggled on just stick to what you know and you will be fine.Stairs: now in the articles i had read it sounded like the resort was on a cliff and there were 3,000 steps there are not! If you have one leg then dont bother but if you are anywhere near fit then it is easy.Sun village is a place a would recommend to anyone with a stressfull life who wants complete relaxation. P.S 151 Rum helps alotP.P.S hi to the bloke from nottingham hope the rest of your holiday went well.
Mostly good, a few changes needed..
I just got back from the resort on Monday, 5/19 and I wanted to post some helpful hints to people who may be staying there in the future. The resort itself is beautiful with some breathtaking views. It has three levels which means many stairs to climb so if you are bringing children or are older I wish you the best of luck. It was fine for me because I'm only 27 but if you aren't in shape or have kids the steps may get annoying after a while. They upgraded us to a deluxe room for free, so ask when you check in. The room was nice with a big balcony and the cleaning people always cleaned it promptly. Because I went in May, the resort wasn't packed which had it's good points and bad points. There wasn't crowding at the pools which was great but the buffets weren't as great as they would probably be if it was their busier time. The food for the most part was fine, some nights really good. The buffet breakfast was the best and for a specialty restaurant Mexican was the best by far. We had one of their specials that night, the burritos and it was the best thing I ever tasted in my life! Overall the resort was pretty good. Just keep in mind that since it is a new resort that they are still working out the kinks. Entertainment at night was limited but I was there to spend time with my boyfriend not see shows or whatever. I wouldn't recommend for single people looking to have a good time or party because I don't think that will happen. One more hint: at the airport there are men waiting to help carry your bags to your tour service. No matter if they bring them 3 feet or 15 feet they charge you $5 which is a big rip off. Take the bags yourself!
This is the worse resort
Please do no stay at this hotel. Yes, the pools are nice, but that's about it. From the mintue we saw our rooms, everything went bad. Our room was horrible. The bathrooms are tiny. If I wanted a tiny bathroom I'll go on a cruise. The food sucked! Even the food in the restaurant was bad, I suggest you stick to the buffet. There was nothing to do there. NO acitvities besides some cheesy high school variety entertainment. The hotel is DEAD by 8 pm. The beach was horrible! If you are looking to just relax for 3 days maybe by the pool and you don't plan to eat, by all means go here. But if you're looking for an exciting adventure and taking a lot of nice pictures, forget it. You're not going to get that here.
Very Nice for a Dominican Hotel
I've been to the DR 3 other times before this trip, and this one was the best stay of them all. We had to stop going to Jack Tarr Village, because they became adults only, so we decided to try Sun Village for 6 nights. For anyone new to the DR, as other reviews have stated...you're in a 3rd world/developing country. Don't expect The BEST & you'll be very pleasantly surprised. The staff was wonderful, friendly, professional, and attentive. The food was incredible. There's a Thai restaurant, Carribean restaurant, all-you can eat Buffet, and Steak and seafood place (wow!) on the beach. On friday night they roasted a pig on the beach & had a blow-out party. The entertainment can get a little corny, but hey, they try. The kids love it....dance contests, burro races. The kids' play place was very well supervised & lots of fun for our 2 small ones...3 & 5. They made tons of friends & had a blast. Gave hubby & I lots of time for fun & sun! The rooms were average...what I would expect in the DR. Lovely balcony overlooking the lush, green, well-manicured grounds. My parents had to move to another room the 2nd day, because the AC wasn't working properly & there was a sewer smell. But the staff was very accomodating. Yes, there are a Lot of stairs...get used to it & get some great exercise! :) If you don't want to climb as many stairs all the time, get a room by the DOLPHIN pool, where all the daily entertainment is, because it's closest to the beach & restaurants. The pools are to die for! Especially the tri-level one. Plenty of bars, swim-ups too. Great kids' pool with water fall & mushroom sprayer. The beach is white sand, calm clear water, quiet bay, lots of shade, plenty of chairs. Nice to walk on. Convenient shops for forgotten shades, hats, sunblock, sarongs. The hotel itself looks beautiful - very Meditteranean. Plenty of bars, plenty of food & drink. Nightly entertainment was fun. No casino yet when I was there, even though the website had said it wouldhat the staff told us. There may be a day spa instead. One word of WARNING....the minute you get there tell them "No, No way, Not gonna happen" when they offer you the tour of their time shares. Otherwise they will bug the holy you-know-what out of you about it. If you say NO right away, they'll leave you alone. Another thing, the doctor on site was wonderful. Yes, he costs money, but you're in a foreign country with no insurance. Once I got back to the states & inquired about prices for meds, it was not unreasonable what we paid for RX and appointment. My mom fell and hurt her leg & he gave her great after-hours care. He lives on site. My son developed an ear infection our last day there & the Dr. was immediately available with antibiotics & pain medication. Overall, great vacation! I would go back in a heart-beat.
great for the price
excellent place for the price i been there 19 times. but id you think that you getting the plaza firget it you must go with the mind of having fun. that ig you don't get hot water, thing about it you are in a country that the temp is 90 degrees what do you need hot water. just have fun and party
Don't go here!!
I hope word gets out that this is the worst hotel ever. Please, take my advice and don't stay here. I went with my husband and three kids to "relax" which was impossible. Everything is far away and to get anywhere you have to climb tons of stairs. Try walking around with a 2 month old in a stroller up and down a million stairs everytime you need to go to your room or to the dining room or to the pool. The website claims it's a six star hotel and new (the website looks amazing, looks are deceiving!) It's old and dirty with a few new renovations. (Plus there's only one six star hotel in the world.) This hotel would be lucky to be classified as a two star hotel. The website promises several amenities.....but when you get there it's a different story. Dirty rooms with small uncomfortable beds, tiny dirty bathrooms. Our first night we found 3 cockroaches crawling around the floor....only could kill two and when we called to complain at midnight we didn't get much help. Sort of like a "tough luck" attitude and if we really were upset they could send someone up to fumigate. Yeah, at midnight fumigate the room so we would be the ones to die and the cockroach would still be crawling all over the place. Only one nice pool, the 3 tier one. We stayed there as much as possible in order to salvage our vacation as much as possible. The other pools are not cleaned or maintained properly. Food has good flavor, but no variety. Plus, not like other all-inclusive hotels where you serve yourself. You have to wait in line for the dining staff to serve you and they give you tiny spoonfuls and when you ask them to give you more they do so grudgingly. Check out time was what ended everything on a sour note. We were told we could check out at 2 pm, so at 1 pm we left the pool to return to the room to shower and change. After climbing a million stairs, when we got to the room we found they had de-activated our room key at 12 pm. I had to go all the way back to reception to re-activate the key. I was extrnormally at 1 pm) to 2 pm to check out if they were going to de-activate the locks 2 hours beforehand? Finally when we got to the room and had our bags we decided to walk downstairs to find a golf cart to take us up to the lobby. When we got downstairs, mind you with three suitcases, stroller (with baby asleep inside) and a diaper bag we found a golf cart parked outside an adjacent building and asked the man to let us put 2 of the suitcases in the cart and that we'd meet him in the lobby since the baby was asleep in the stroller. The guy looked behind him (the cart was empty) and said "No, there's no room". We were incredulous and asked again, and he said "No, can't be done". 2 guests who saw the commotion came over and were the ones to help us carry our bags up all the stairs to the lobby. When we complained in the lobby, again our complaints fell on deaf ears. I have never been so happy to return home from a vacation in my life!If you want to vacation on the North Coast, do NOT go to Sun Village. Go to Iberostar where they know how to treat you and the facilities are all excellent.
Oh Boy
Might have been one worst vacation yet. Food Terrible. Concerns went without answers and had to pay for many things at this "ALL INCLUSIVE".On the plus side...the pools are very nice and the weather was fabulous. Have had stomach cramps for 3 weeks since returning.Expensive for what you get. Shop around and maybe try one of the bigger chains with more buying power. This company seems to have financial troubles. Watch out for Timeshare sell.
under rated resort
Myself & partner visited sun village september 2002 and had an absolutely fantastic time. The staff were polite, helpfull and generally nice people ( always smiling ). The food is superb, excellent choice & presentation especially the thai restaraunt. The pools & grounds are immaculate at all times ( the staff carry on cleaning whatever the weather ). The beach barbeque on fridays is good fun & the staff are very proffesional. Make sure you go on the Monster truck safari. The brochures really do not do this resort justice as this is one of the nicest places to visit. If you would like any pictures or info, let me know.
worst vacation ever
the rooms are horrible, ac that sounds like a tractor all day, no hot water, small shower one hip at a time please, horrible service (like no maid service for couple of days), food ineatable, entertainment is better than watching Bravo t.v., the smell next to our rooms was coming from sewers(no amount of perfume helped). Oh lets not forget there are only two shades for 6 pools and the beach. Kids had fun swimming until the burn set in(since there is no where to hide from the sun).Overall it could be worse(like it rained for 7 days but with interruptions). By the way April is the rainy season. And PLEASE DON'T GET SICK doctors visit and treatment costs more the trip. The worst place I have ever been to(and I've been to dominica 6 times)
