Highly recommended
We stayed at Sosua by the Sea this past April on the recommendation of some friends and weren't disappointed. We normally vacation at the larger, 'chain' resorts, if for no other reason than that we don't like to take chances with our holidays and we pretty much know what to expect from the larger chains. This time we took a chance and it paid off. The resort was super-clean by any standards and extremely well-maintained. You can tell that this is a property that the owners are proud of and it shows in the touches -- the pool... more
Totally enjoyed it
We had a great time there and we met a great deal of nice people. To say that electricity is unpredictable, it is not just this hotel, it is all over the DR. We never had any problem with it, nor that we spent a lot of time in our suite, why spend the day inside, we go on vacation for the nice weather outside. I am a very difficult person to feed and I never went hungry. Drink waterdown, what a joke, it is all inclusive, why would they create more work for themself, the drinks where wanderful. The staf was great and everything was fine. I... more
loved the resort!
We stayed at Soua By The Sea April 17 - 24th. Following months of research of the Dominican and it's resorts, my husband and I decided Sosua had what we were looking for in a vacation, (beach, variety of restaurants, shopping, and fun excursions). After narrowing down to Sosua, we began reading the reviews of the surrounding hotels. Sosua By The Sea was everything I hoped it would be. The rooms were very accomodating and clean. My husband did complain the bed was extremely hard and difficult to get a good night sleep. The front desk... more
Beautiful spot, nice people
I stayed at Sosua by the Sea over the holiday season and very much enjoyed it. The hotel was fully booked, yet felt relaxed, not hurried or crowded (by contrast, the much larger resort next door seemed a bit more of a zoo, though the food looked good and it seemed fancy). Staff were genuinely friendly and helpful (those at the front desk were sometimes busy, but not unfriendly). Though we stayed just a week, the relatively small size of the hotel and laidback atmosphere allowed my travel mates and I to make friends with staff as well as... more
Don't do it!!!
If you want to enjoy your vacation, don't go to this hotel. The hotel is small the elevators break down alot. The electricity and water is unpredictable. The food was terrible, the drinks were watered down. The beach is tiny. I would stay anywhere but here.
Management response from SosuabytheSea

While I accept that not all reviews will be favourable, I must unfortunately object to those that are simply factually inaccurate. The resort has 91 rooms. Whether that is considered small or not would be a matter of opinion (not that we find anything wrong with small resorts, and are in fact happy to be considered such). Watering down the drinks, given the low cost of alcohol in this country, would be a waste of time. Add to that the fact that many of our guests are all-inclusive and can therefore order as many drinks as they please at no extra cost. One would think we would want our drinks to be stronger, not weaker, in order to have to make less of them. This sort of accusation is not only ridiculous, but shows bad faith on the part of the reviewer. The elevator has been out of service, according to our logs, for a grand total of 4 days in the past two years, once for regular service and once for a door issue that was quickly resolved. I doubt that would qualify as 'a lot', but perhaps for some people it would. We have direct access to two beaches. One we share with Casa Marina Beach/Reef which yesterday had hundreds of people comfortably lying out, playing volleyball and swimming. The other beach is quite a bit smaller and more intimate, but still more than adequate. The electricity in this country is intermittent, it's true. When the power goes out, our generator automatically kicks in and the entire resort has power within 8 seconds. Whether these 8 seconds qualify as 'unpredictable' is a matter of opinion. Water is in constant supply. On the subject of our food. It is extremely easy to go online and say that food is 'inedible' or 'terrible'. Unlike ridiculous claims like 'no beach' or 'watered down drinks', it's impossible for a resort to cry foul when these sorts of claims are made. While it's difficult to offer all things to all people at all meals, we receive a great many good reviews regarding our food, and many local residents come here to eat, which is a great compliment in itself. Nevertheless, we are constantly improving and upgrading our menu, and very much appreciate any sort of constructive feedback. I'm forced to again wonder as to the authenticity of many of these reviews. In an open forum such as this, one should take all reviews, good or bad, with a grain of salt. That being said, reviews that are patently false should be challenged. Our resort is not perfect, no resort ever is, and we gladly accept legitimate negative feedback as well as positive as a starting off point to improve. That being said, in calendar year 2004, when asked on their comment cards if they would recommend us to their friends, 94% said yes with 3% not answering. We're trying hard to please the other 3% who said no, but coupling these great numbers with our exceptionally high repeat and referral rate, we're confident we're doing something right. Again, we welcome both positive and negative feedback, but public, anonymous attacks with little if any grounding in reality serve no purpose except perhaps to slander a competitor or grind a personal axe.

not bad
We just got back home from soaua. We found this hotel to be a very good value. The staff was friendly and spoke decent english. It is a small hotel and doesn't have all the luxury of 4 or 5 star hotels, but it is small, clean, nice beach, and pool. The food was good, and I think it was an all inclusive bargain. Beware that when you leave the hotel grounds, you are in a real dominican town with shabby buildings and poverty all around, but this is the real domonican republic. P.S. the weather was like paradise.
great place to relax
A group of four of us went to sosua by the sea last april, We felt at the time writing a review would not help the hotel. That all change when I read the last review. First off the entire staff was fantastic especially the front desk. They handled special request like flowers in the room, a special birthday dinner on the patio overlooking the ocean, musicians to play for my wifes birthday. The prices I was charged, were very good, there was no way I could afford all that back in the states. The rooms were large, clean, and did not have that... more
Hated the hotel
What a disappointment. The worst aspect was the food. Only edible meal was breakfast. Only acceptable drink- beer. The rooms were old and needed updating. Definitely not worth the money. The wait staff in the "dining are" was very nice although the same could not be said for the front desk.
Great Time
I stayed at Sosua By The Sea Resort in Sosua D.R.. This resort is excellent and they are trying to distinguish themselves from the others. A small resort compared to the mega resorts in the region and this where they make their distinction. Situated right beside the water where you can experience all your meals looking over the sea as the waves crash against the rocks, a truly romantic experience. Because this is one of first resorts in the area it has survived on focusing on the guest and their stay. The food served in buffet... more
very nice
Very nice place with excellent sunsets/good food and close to a few shops and stores for souveniers and groceries. Economy is very cheap yet beware of those who want to bargain and still charge you too much. a fun and different experience for those who have never been....if you scubadive I reccomend the big blue on sosua beach a short walk. and very casual and very nice tell lion I said hello
