Excellent holiday apart from the food
This was our second time to Menorca and i have to say that if we stay in the S'Algar again it will be room only as we were not impressed with the food.On the second week of our stay i couldn't face going in for breakfast as i was getting quite annoyed at the lack replenishing of foods. Fried eggs appeared every three days but they were hard there were boiled eggs on every day but what we didn't realise was that they were hard boiled.Bacon every other day and sausages every other day which were awful. So if you wanted a full English you had to eat out which we did.Dinner was ok but again Chefs a bit slow replenishing and they like to cook the potatoes and veg with onions and aubergines. I work for a very large catering company and my partner is an Executive chef so we do know what standard of food we should have recieved. The hotel and resort was fantastic and all the staff were extremely polite and helpful. The rooms were very clean. The food in the pool Bar was excellent. We stayed in the San Luis hotel last year and the food was excellent but we couldn't get in this year which was a shame.
Great family holiday, Lovely Location
My family and I have just returned from S'Algar resort and I have to say it was a lovely holiday. The hotel is friendly, the rooms are clean and the food at the hotel was fine. We intially had booked half board but decided to upgrade to all inclusive (20 euros per adult per day, 10 euros for kids under 12), it was worth it. There was lots of sport to keep my 9 year old and my hubby happy (he can't sit still in the sun!) football, kayaking, archery, shooting, tennis, moutain bike excursions to name but a few....ALL ARE FREE. There's a kids club for little ones (we have a 18 month old) with a fenced off area with sand, slides, play hut etc. The pizza place for lunch was lovely and the staff were great with the kids which is more than I can say for the ASIA restaurant, word of warning, if you have children under three don't go there. They have no high chairs, no straws and don't really have much in the way of food for kids. The welcome is stifled to say the least. They have a lovely seating area outside which remained empty long after our table and three other tables had eaten and left but when you ask if you can sit outside they say they are booked. Food was nothing special, drinks are in small measure and my Mum left half way through dinner to take our daughter back to the hotel to eat. There's a great diving centre in the resort. The resort itself is very picturesque and not a tacky Spanish/ British resort. And there's a little train that goes around the resort from 7 - 10 every night. Great for little ones and for big kids too. We'll definately be going back there again.
great hotel very relaxing
I cannot understand that there are no reviews on this hotel since last year. However myself and my wife stayed here between 9th july to 16th july 2007. we found the hotel very relaxing, the maid service was excellent and nothing was a bother to them. the reception and lounge area was spotless and very good english speaking staff, it helps if you try a litle spanish. the bar at night in my opinion is understaffed especially when they have entainment. The entertainment was adequate which does not bother both of us as we do not go on holiday for the entertainment, that's just an extra to us. the whole area is lovely, just a 5 minute slow walk will take you to a small square with a lovely restaurant and bar. walk the other way across the rocks to another bar area with a superb sea view.all in all a great place to relax and chill out. the food we both believe was plentifull and of a good variety, saying that we still ate out 3 nights, that's not knocking the food at all, it was just a change of scenery. i would recommend this hotel, give it a go
El Buffet
We stayed all inclusive at the Los Naranjos apartments in the S'Algar Resort. All inclusive starts at 11am and finishes at 11pm. 2 minutes walk from the San Luis hotel. Lovely apartment, sea and pool views. Only problem with the location was the sudden but slight smell of what can only be described as an elephant house outside by the pool. Also, didn't realise the tv can be tuned to other channels until the last day. Swimming pool was very large and deep with loads of sun loungers. Bar by the pool. Staff very friendly but you had to guess what ice creams and drinks you were allowed on the all inclusive. The bar has sky tv with all channels, first to get to the remote gets to choose. Don't use the post box in reception as our postcards were still poking out after a week. The sea front was a two minute walk away from the apartments, with a large swimming pool and a snack bar. 3 euros for a sun lounger on a concrete base. No sand. There is a free train (a converted van) which you can ride around the resort every evening from 7 til 10. For the meals you have to go to the main hotel (4 star) which has a buffet style restaurant, and a pizzeria for lunch. One asian restaurant which could only be used once during your stay and you had to book the night before. The buffet was excellent. Very good value for money, all you can eat, but only one drink per person. Best drink to have for value for money is either a pint of beer or a bottle of water. The main hotel had a sports complex where you could choose from a variety of activities, morning and afternoon, including archery, shooting, darts, watersports, kayaking, football, tennis, golf, a big bowls green and ping pong. They give diplomas if you win an activity, be warned, you have to get on stage with a load of kids during the evening entertainment. Win five diplomas and get a medal. There is a bus to Mahon, but Tuesday and Saturday is market day, so the bus was crammed with people, and only comes every few hours. I've never seen so many people on a bus in all my life. Entertainment was ok, and every night except sunday. Flamenco dancing, a quiz night, a magician (who was no houdini), and a kids show every night featuring the hotel mascot (S'Algui) who looks like a big sperm. Kids show is the same every night, and a bit annoying, even if you have small children. All five adults enjoyed the stay, especially the food. Our day seemed to revolve around eating (three meals a day). We only went to breakfast twice because it was quite early, but more than made up for it at lunch.
Amazing Spot!
We stayed in S'Algar last year and although not at the S'Algar Hotel, we ate there several times. The food has always been of a good standard so others may have just been unlucky or ridiculously fussy. S'Algar is a beautiful resort,by far the best on the island. It is immaculately presented thus giving the impression of a high class resort. It isn't.It is predominantly a family resort in a stunning location with minimal night time disturbances. So perhaps those expecting upmarket luxury should pay a bit more and go elsewhere. The hotel is very picturesque, the staff friendly and helpful. There are a couple of good restaurants to eat out.The S'Algar restaurant next to the hotels pool is excellent as is The Reina Isabel in the quaint little square. For snorkelling,go to Rafalet near Las Palmeras. The nearby beach at Alcaufar is perfect for toddlers and is an easy walk on a proper path, not scrambling over rocks as some have said! For trips out Mahon harbour is a must with lots of restaurants and shops.Don't miss out on a trip to Es Castell(Villa Carlos).Very pretty at night time for a meal. The caves at CalanPorter are very impressive. You can visit by day or if you're young and fit enough, the disco at night is spectacular. You really need a car to appreciate the beauty of the island.Very easy to drive here as its mostly country roads(nice wide ones too!)
Wonderful friendly staff.
My Husband and I have just returned from a 2 week stay in S'Algar, Menorca. This was a "Bridge Holiday", organised by a UK Group, 1st for Bridge, and we found just about everything about the Hotel very good. We opted to stay, not in the Hotel itself, but in their 2 bedroomed Apartments close by, and could not fault the spotless cleanliness of these units. Every day, the cleaning staff came in, changed the linen and towels, washed the floors, and cleaned the large patio area. Each person was very friendly, and tried to communicate with us in English. The food, which was a 3 time a day experience, (in other words, we had full-board), was fresh and constantly renewed by the chefs and their helpers. You could start with Soup, followed by a large Salad selection. Fish was always on the menu, as well as many types of meats, and loads of vegetables. There was a large selection of Cheeses and mouth-watering desserts, and also a big table of fresh fruit for either eating there.or taking away for snacks - the staff actively encouraged this ! WE also had free wine and`bottled water with our Lunch. !The Library was a very comfortable room, and of course there were loads of books, mainly left by other departing guests, as we did ourselves on leaving. A very good and happy Hotel. L. Ryan. Dublin Ireland.
Nice and easy
Having just come back from this hotel I cannot understand some of the previous comments,we found this hotel to be perfectly acceptable for a 4* hotel. Our family consits of two adults 48+44 and my 14 year old daughter. Problems (1) When we arrived we found a broken electrical socket and almost straight away, was fixed within 2 hrs. Food No problems here either, very tasty and a good selection of meats, fish, salads, continental breakfast as well as traditional bacon, eggs, tomatos, sausage etc and sweets as well. Staff Very polite and attentive, when they found out my daughter was learning spanish they went out of there way to help. The hotel is clean and tidy, however if you want blackpool then this resort is definately not for you. As far as I'm concerned it coud not be better, after all there is enough information telling you what the resort is like and if you go expecting loads to do then tough, its quiet and thats just the way we like it.As I dive the divecenter is very close which makes life easy, watersports and sunbathing are the only activities to do.If you want a little more action I suppose you could walk up to the sant luis hotel.
Very friendly but NOT 4 Star quality
Very friendly hotel but disappointing quality. Reception area furniture smelt dingy and stale, in fact whole Hotel and rooms never smell clean, even just after cleaners been round. Corridor carpets never hoovered in fortnight, no air con in them either and, be warned, there are still several small flights of stairs to go up and down once you have done the lift. Our bedding was only changed once in a fortnight and our bathroom toilet smelt constantly. Food was fine, (apart from undercooked chicken several times), but not 4 star quality. Cost 5 euros a day to have mini bar in room! No tea making facilities in room either.Pool area lovely but had to share with lots of others from nearby apartments. Hotel bar understaffed when busy.Felt a bit 'cut off' from rest of Island as buses don't run that often. We didnt want a 'disco inferno resort' but this was extremely quiet and small.Hire car a must to appreciate Island as a whole, but book early at this time of year, very busy. Some fantastic beaches further up with wonderful snorkelling ,scenery and seafront restaurants etc. to offer.
Small, friendly hotel. Great location
Whilst I would agree that this hotel is presently not a good example of a 4star hotel.,it has many features that make you feel at home and want to go back. It's location is excellent, right on the sea front in a very quiet resort. It was extremely hot when I was there but the air con in the bedroom was excellent. The dining room, which overlooked the bay was also very nice to sit in. Unlike the previous report, I found the food fine and the staff were excellent. Choice of food was not of the standard of a good 4star but I never found it a problem and there was still a good variety of dishes to select from. Entertainment is minimal. Usually a singer or group about 3 or 4 times a week. I would recommend a car, as there are some wonderful places to visit. There is local transport but the timings were very relaxed! I would recommend this hotel and resort to anyone looking for a quiet, relaxing holiday and who is looking to stay in one of the very few unspoilt parts of the Balearics. Some of the nearby places are just breath taking. I will certainly return along with the many others who return year after year.
Lovely hotel shame about the food
As the title says lovely hotel but the evening meal was awful!ended up eating out after finding chicken not cooked through(blood when cut open),reported this to head waiter but did not get a response & if you like rabbit you will be fine as this appeared on the menu every night.Definately only two star food. Also beware of the steps after the cleaning staff have been mopping, they are very slippy. My husband had a very nasty fall unaware of how slippy they were, reported this to reception & the rep. but no action was taken. The positives are the resort is very peaceful & relaxing, spotlessly clean and some nice walks if you don`t mind scrambling over a rock or two.The bus service is cheap & reliable so a trip to Mahon to admire the fabulous boats in the harbour is a must,a trip to the old capital Cuitadella is also recommended. This was our first visit to Menorca & we found it a very pretty island we would definatley return to explore further & if the food improved even stay at the S`Algar again,it was great to sit on the balcony & watch the world go by & the cruise ships on their way past in & out of Mahon harbour.
