Submitted By: Miss D Barkerthe island is beautiful and salgar offers a great base to explore.
if you want nightlife its not for you but if you want to relax and explore at your own pace a great holiday is ahead for you.
The food can be a little repetative but on the whole no great concerns.
not for families as little for children but great for a romatic get away.

Submitted By: Mr TR CarmanThe hotel is situated superbly, for closeness to the sea. Salgar is a quiet part of the island and exactly what we required. The hotel is definitely 4 star, compared to hotels I have stayed in around the Med. Very clean, mature and elegant set in a residential area of Salgar. Staff were professional in every aspect. A leak in our air conditioning unit was dealt with swiftly. Rooms are very comfortable, and the maid service daily. Dining room situated on the first floor overlooking the sea was spacious and staffed well. The food choices for both breakfast and dinner was excellent. The lounge and the bar areas are very comfortable. The hotel offers daily papers for residents of different nationalities, and within the lounge, there is a free paper back book library. Around the pool area is spotless, and this along with the hotel, is inspected daily, by the Salgar hotel senior management team. Who can be seen early in the morning carrying this out. I hope at some time in the future to return to the Salgar hotel.

Submitted By: Mrs K JamiesonIf you want a cheap holiday with lots of beer, English food, loud music, and crowds of Brits wandering round all night throwing up then please DON'T go to S'Algar. EVER.
If you want a holiday with loads of local cuisine, local drinks (the gin is exceptional!), culture (Es Castell/Villa Carlos has just held their Fiesta), and loads to do, if you're prepared to look for it, then come and see S'Algar.
We have just come back from our 8th visit to S'Algar and have enjoyed it as much as usual. We are not in our dotage, we have a 9 year old son. We do not book through a tour operator, we find accommodation and flights independently, and we probably pay far less than those of you on All Inclusive deals which you clearly don't like.
If you're prepared to learn a bit of Spanish, the locals and staff are very friendly, and remember you when you go back. The nightlife is non-existent, unless you are happy to sit and people watch, this year we watched many people aimlessly wandering around looking for something to do.
S'ALGAR IS QUIET, THAT'S ITS APPEAL, SOME OF US LIKE IT.
You can spend all day long in a fabulous pool (opposite the S'Algar Hotel). Then you can eat in one of the restaurants in the village. They are all good, the Las Palmeras is excellent, and they are all good value for money. If you hire a car, there are plenty of places to go to, all within easy reach. The roads are good, and maps are excellent.
The bus into Mahon is punctual, comfortable and cheap. It is a nuisance that you cannot get a bus into the city after 10am, and then not until later in the day (I think at about 4pm), but you plan your trips round that.
The thing that is not good for S'Algar is the All Inclusive holiday deals. Local bars and restaurants are obviously suffering because of it. There is now only one proper supermarket, because the Spar and the Las Palmeras stores have shut. The lovely gift shop at the San Luis is also now shut. We found the restaurants as good as ever, but the numbers are so reduced it is hard to see how they can stay in business. One of the restaurants has been taken over by a lovely new Spanish family, and we hope they get the custom required to make it worth their efforts.
We hope to return for many years to S'Algar, and we also hope the AI package deals stop, so S'Algar can return to the thriving but quiet, clean and welcoming village that it has been for as long as we've been going.

Submitted By: Miss J O''Neillnext day we got moved to the St Louis hotel. the room was ok but only clean towels once all week, carpet was not hoovered. the meals were very much repetative and fish was on the menu every lunch and evening. chips for breakfast! whippeee.
The glasses and cutlery were not very clean and waiter staff were unfriendly and you thought they had wind if they smiled lol.
If AI you got the watered down cheap drinks and once 11pm was reached that was it you were told to go inside so they could switch off lights and lock up.
There is no Beach real or man made and the one in the little alcove is such a dangerouse walk you could not take children or if you have mobility difficulties would be impossible.
Bus service is terrible 7 buses a day. easier to get a taxi.
there is no shop/boutique at the St Louis even though it states that it does in the brochure. there is no curtesy bus to Punta Prima or if there was there was no info about it.
WE found the holiday totally boring and to say it was July not very many people there. we were ready to come home after 2 days.
The Thomas Cook rep was a Joke, she couldnt tell us what was included and what she did tell us was usually wrong. she even gave us the wrong pick up time for the return home which could have resulted in us missing our plane home.
It is very confusing what is classed as all inclusive and what you have to pay for. there are no Snacks during the day apart from a bag of nuts or plain crisps and only certain Ice lollies. others you have to pay for.
The one good place to eat was the La Pasta, but again you could only have certain things on AI if you wanted something different you had to pay. The Salads were lovely at La Pasta.
Entertainment was very poor and evening entertainment was not restricted to adults and some things they expected kids to par take in were too near the nuckle if you know what I mean.
We would never go back and never reccomend the S Algar Village unless you are in you latter years and dont want to do anything.

Submitted By: Mr R PrydderchThe pool is across the road, clean and with first class bar facilities, including an excellent varied menu for all to enjoy. There was also a seperate grassy area for Hotel Salgar guests to enjoy, with sunbeds available at all times without the towel having to be put over!
Salgar resort is very quiet, but relaxing. It does have a bus service to Mahon, from there you can reach anywhere on the island or hire a car and get around yourself. Nice beach ten-15 minute walk away, should you insist on a day at the beach, or a taxi to Punta Prima to enjoy an even bigger beach, this also has a nice market at night.
Overall loads you can do (but it won't come to you), go out and explore yourself. Very relaxing, and yes we are looking to book again.

Submitted By: Mr M ArthurIf you like your eggs, bacon and other breakfast items all dried up, this is the place to come. If you would like to stand for fifteen minutes while the thing they called a toaster tried to brown the bread, here is the place. If you were not in the dining room within the first half hour, all the nice potatoes were gone and out came the inevitable chips, this to go with the dried up meat and veg. I do not think that the chickens in Salgar have any bodies, as we were only served legs and that was only on two evenings.
The fruit table consisted of sliced orange, kiwi fruit and tinned pineapple, that is if the containers had not run out, as no one bothered to check if they were empty. You could always ask for more , but this was like Oliver Twist.
Why do they need to charge 20euros an hour for the internet when others charge 5euros? What a shame that this hotel is in such a nice place and the accomodation so good to be let down by the catering, and some miserable staff. I SHALL NOT RETURN.

Submitted By: Mr Mike LawlessI am 23 years old and as a family, we have been going to S'Algar, Menorca since I was 4 years old. I practically grew up there and it is a child's haven!!! I have never stayed in any of the local hotels, only visited for meals, entertainment, drinks, etc. We have always stayed in the self catering villas opposite the Las Palmeras hotel. There is so much to do in S'Algar (if you're active of course). The S'Algar Diving Club offers every sort of watersport imaginable. And even though the evening entertainment at the San Luis Hotel can be at cheesy some nights, it is still a good night out.
Right opposite these villas, there is the start of a path which leads down to a hidden alcove which has a small beach and fantastic snorkelling! There are no directions or maps to get there so it's a bit of hit and miss to find it. I got lost first two times but know the path like the back of my hand now. The views from the cliffs are extraordinary.
Alcafar is a great beach again with wonderful snorkelling and it is extremely safe for little ones to be running around everywhere. Punta Prima is a another fantastic beach. If you're up for a drive, the island's best beach by far is Son Bou.
The old island capital, Cuitadella, is absolutely wonderful and well worth the 1 hour 20 minute drive. The current capital, Mahon, is stunning with great shopping and fabulous markets. The harbour is something else and really breathtaking. If you get a chance, go to Restaurante Roma in Mahon, food is marvellous!!!
Also, the closest town to S'Algar, Sant Lluis is definitely worth a walk around and if you happen to be there in the last week of August, you're in for a treat as the Fiesta is amazing.
Menorca is a fantastic island for that perfect relaxing holiday you've always wanted. Some of my most cherished childhood memories are from being in Menorca.
My advice for the best holiday in S'Algar is to go self-catering and hire a car for the duration of you're trip as there is so much to see and do outside S'Algar.
I'm off again in July 2008! HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!

Submitted By: Miss R MurphyThe food is EXCELLENT! Plenty of choice at both breakfast and evening meal, and considering we had a vegetarian & someone with wheat intolerance in our group, there was something for everyone to enjoy every day. Great variety and really tasty, and being a buffet style we were all able to try dishes we hadn't had before, which was great. The dinners were really something to look forward to! Staff were really friendly and helpful and the hotel itself was lovely - nicely decorated, clean and well equipped. There is a spa open from 4:30pm, a bar with evening entertainment (usually DJ or live band), a reading room and table tennis.
The pool area is clean & pleasant, and looks right out at the sea. One thing I like was that the lifeguards check where you are staying; meaning that as only guests staying at the hotel can use the facilities, there's never a problem getting a sun lounger! There is a diving centre right by the pool which does a wide range of courses and excursions, from snorkelling and taster scuba sessions to full PADI courses. Two of our party did a "discover scuba" dive & were well looked after & had a great time.
There are plenty of places to sit outside and enjoy a drink of your own, which is good as S'Algar isn't blessed with many bars! S'Algar is not a resort for those looking for a holiday filled with wild nights out, but if you want a holiday in a clean, well-kept hotel, eat fabulous food and relax in the sun, this is the place for you! Was also really impressed that as we had a late flight on our last day, the hotel gave us use of a spare room at no extra charge at the end of the day, including clean towels, so that we could freshen up before we left for the airport. Highly recommended.
" 1) During breakfast and dinner:
* Glasses were dirty!
* No cards with beverages and prices on the tables. You have to ask this explicitly. They are very unfriendly and annoying if you ask for the card. This is really unprofessional!
* If you don't have all-inclusive like I had, drinks are very expensive: 2 euro for 0,2l cola and 1,8 euro for 0,5l water. (Beware, read the next remark.)
* For each order, you will be asked in an unfriendly manner to sign your order. At the end of your stay, you will be handed the invoice of all your consumptions. The last day, we discovered that you need to pay an additional amount of 7% taxes, which means that their card showed prices taxes excluded! I call this misleading and stealing. In Belgium (my home country), such practices are forbidden by law.
* Breakfast is each day _exactly_ the same, but the contents is varied. No chocolate paste available and orange juice if really really bad. But ok, I consider this the typical hotel-kind of orange juice.
* During dinner: typical buffet, not haute cuisine, but there is always something you like. Exceptionally bad was steak and goulash. Starters were mostly veggie.
2) The room:
* No electronic keys.
* Airco OK.
* Floor is carpet. I find this dirty. Carpet was not vacuum cleaned during stay.
* Balcony has bird shit all over the place, which makes it unpleasant to sit there.
* Bathroom was OK. Good pressure on the water. Always hot water available.
* Each day you receive new towels.
* Room was rather "compact".
* Even if you are a late sleeper, they will come a clean your room later the day without exceptions.
3) Bar
* No service on the table.
* Rich variety of drinks, they serve real Coca-Cola even for all-inclusive formula.
* Again, no cards of drinks available on the tables (for both all-inclusive and half-board customers). You have to ask this explicitly. You will receive a one-page ugly copy with all their drinks and the prices, taxes included. I didn't know that cards are top secret company information and should be hidden away as much as possible? FYI: soft drinks 1,8 euro for 0,2l.
4) Evening entertainment
* some evening entertainment shows were OK: a live rock/country music band, Spanish dances, and comic show. All the other nights were really bad: e.g. playing bingo (sitting there and listening to numbers), bad live music groups (but ok, this depends on your personal preferences).
5) Environment (s'Algar minus San Luis hotel that is)
* Very quiet, nice environment.
* Little or no bars.
* During July, huge part (50%+) of s’Algar Resort was empty. Clearly, they did not succeed to rent their apartments. Maybe there is a reason for that?
* There is an artificial beach on the rocks near the hotel, which is so ugly that it was not used by any guests during my stay. To go to a nice beach, you have to pay 2,5 euro to take the bus (private bus service of hotel) to Punta Prima to have a nice beach. It is my opinion that this should become free service since the beach nearby the hotel really sucks.
* In the impossibility to buy a couple ice cream with fresh strawberries :-) in s’Algar. There were only vending machines near different shops/bars in s’Algar.
6) Sports facilities
* There was false/unclear information in the brochure of my tour operator JetAir Belgium (Tui)/Sunjets. _All_ guests (all inclusive and half board) get the advantages of the sports facilities.
- For the mountain bikes, you have to pay 12 euro for one day and 8,5 euro for half a day. 5 euro deposit. You get a free, small plan of Menorca on request. Very friendly British lady at the sports reception. No insurances whatsoever for the bike, even if somebody else steals your bike. Bike was ok.
- Snorkelling and kayak is free for all guests. Very limited number of people who can join the activities. I did not had the opportunity to go snorkelling during my entire stay. So, I went snorkelling myself.
- Ping pong was also for free. Good infrastructure.
- Fitness is also free, but infrastructure is rather poor and the fitness room is really small. Hence, not many people use the fitness room.
7) Conclusion
* Because of the unfriendliness of the personnel and their unprofessional attitude (7% taxes at the end), I will certainly never come again to this hotel. Hotel is not worth 4 stars.
* In my experience, the food during dinner was rather poor.
* You are en-prisoned in s’Algar resort: last bus from Mahon to S’Algar at 18:30. Or you need to rent a car.
* Advice: Take a hotel near Punta Prima, Cala Goldana, or Cala ’n Bosch!

Submitted By: Mrs G.E FurberRooms were clean and comfortable, staff helpful and friendly. Food varied and plentiful. The resort itself was very quiet with pleasant walks. First class pool and pool bar overlooking the sea, also sea swimming from rock platforms.
I would recommend this hotel for couples wanting to relax without hectic night life.
" First impression was what have we... "
Submitted By: Mrs E SmithHotel staff were not very friendly and anyone on all inclusive is treated like a second class citizen. You have a seperate menu and if you look at the order board you will see you get served after the paying customers. They do not seem to appreciate the fact that you have paid in advance. There are NO daytime snacks available either other than ice cream. Great if you are on a diet! I lost over a stone in the fortnight with the walks and lack of food. The burger bar advertised does not exist anymore either.
We spent about a grand in the fortnight on eating out and food from spar to make sure the kids got a good breakfast because at las palmeras they are not geared up to cater for you. There were 2 hot plates to serve ALL guests so breakfast could be eggs and mushroom or eggs and vegetables (yes really). There is NO entertainment at this part of the complex. You will need to walk for 20 minutes down a steep hill to the St Louis hotel where there is very basic entertainment apart from on a Sunday when there is NONE. Getting back is a problem too as the "train" finishes at 10 which is when the entertainment has not really got going. We had a 3 year old with us and had to push the pushchair back up the steep slope which took about 20-30 minutes and included lots of steps on the way. No chance for disabled people.
We went at high season end of July/August for 2 weeks and wished we had only booked a week or even better not booked at all. I had read reviews but believe me this is an honest one and I would hope people will read it before booking. Our teenager (14) was bored and would have preferred to be at home which sums it up really. The pool at Las Palmeras is the nicest of the resort but is cold due to the wind which is ever present. What else can I say? Can I think of anything positive? Not really. Still we know not to book there again and also not to book with Thomas Cook whose rep there is vile. We have always booked through them but never again. Service with a sneer.

The hotel is of an excellent standard and if staying on half board then you wont be let down by the quality and variety of the food available.
The resort is quiet but then if you do your homework before hand then you know what to expect.
There are some pleasant coastal walks for the more energetic with some superb coves to be discovered.
The pool area is immaculate and well maintained with a private terrace for Hotel S'algar guests and the Pool supervisor Miguel is a star!
While there is no beach in S'algar(but not to us a problem)then there is easy access to the sea for an enjoyable swim.
There are a small number of holiday apartment areas and an array of delightful and beautiful (mostly privately owned)villas.
There is towards the rear of this small resort a large family hotel with lots of facilities which is the only building above two stories high.
A trip (or two)to the capital Mahon is well worth it and a local bus service runs a number of times each day at a cost currently of only 3 euros for the return trip.
There was a variety of ages staying at the resort which while we were there were mainly Brits and Italians with a smuttering of German and Spanish.
Highly recommended for a chill out holiday!
Advice: S'algar is beautiful,clean and peaceful and the facilities are excellent
Activities: 'Dinky' bar is ideally situated,pleasant surroundings,ambience and staff.
Good for: Beach
