Golden Residence

We booked after reading reports on Trip Advisor through a company called Happy Holidayz.We'd never heard of them and were unsure as to what expect. All was well, the driver turned up at airport and even though we expected a double room we actually got a bonus, an apartment. We would recommend this company. When we booked this apartment, it was so reasonably priced that we fully expected problems. Nothing could be further from the truth. The apartment was right up to the minute, very very comfortable and very spacious. Fully equipped except for a kettle but one was provided within 10 minutes. We were in the middle block, but it seemed a bit of a hike to get anywhere due to the unusual layout of the hotel on the steep hillside/cliff. We ended up here as the hotel we had booked in to was full. Staff were very understanding and did all they could to accomodate us (?get our custom). Anyway the stay was very comfortable, rooms hug. What is worth mentioning is that the hotel is designed with disabled people in mind, easy acces everywhere in wheelchair - even into the pool, and offers various therapies such as physio and dressing changes, even a safe room for people with dementia. I had a fantastic stay thanks to both Happy Holidayz and the staff at The Golden Residence. The hotel is immaculate, and the staff are so helpful. It is located 100m from the main shopping centre which is open until midnight every night! Madeira is a gem, the weather is fantastic! Goodbyr canaries, there is no comparison. It is not full of old people, I am 32 and there were plenty of eople at the hotel who were younger than me. All in all a bargain, I would pay double to return if I had to.

We couldn't believe the rate we got for this hotel so weren't quite sure what to expect but it was superb from start to finish. The staff throughout are efficient, helpful, professional and very welcoming. The public areas are cool and contemporary and very stylishly furnished. We stayed a week in a one bedroom apartment. This new hotel is stylishly decorated in classic natural materials. The apartment was quiet and the beds were very comfortable. The reception staff were most helpful. I particularly appreciated being offered the apartment at 11.30 am when we arrived although it stated on my booking form that it would not be available until 2.00 pm and they answered other queries very quickly. Spent a week at the GR, and was toally blown away! Excellent room, featuring big living room with comfy settee (!), large flat screen TV, and fully equipped kitchenette (although no kettle!), glass sided balcony with sea views, and a seperate spacious bedroom with ensuite bathroom. Staff were really great ,so, all in all, definitely well recommended!

We took the whole family, and spent New Year´s at Golden Residence Hotel. Very nice hotel. Modern, elegant and the rooms are great. The New Year´s eve buffet was superb. The staff was very helpful, and tried to help in whatever we needed. I strongly recommend the stay there!

My wife and I previously stayed at Eden Mar in Dec 2004. This time we had an equally good bargain B+B holiday via Co-op Travel at Golden Residence (at the town edge of the Praia Formosa) just outside Funchal. The GR apparently only opened in April 2007, Everything was clean, though a few rough edges already noticeable (eg toilet seat in public area not fixed in any way to the bowl!)
