Pousada Convento da Graca

We stayed here for our honeymoon and everything about the hotel was brilliant. We found the staff were all really helpful and friendly, and the room was clean and very comfy. Having been converted from an old convent the hotel had much more character than many places we've stayed and we loved eating our breakfast each morning in the sunlight cloisters! It's quite extraordinary what's been done to this building. Touches of its long history are everywhere, but as a hotel it is absolutely modern and comfortable. As an aficionado of modern design, I was floored. There are many public gathering spaces -- not just a bar and restaurant but the pool, various nooks with tables, a serene courtyard, a living room. The instant peace in this building is, perhaps, much needed after driving around the base of the hill looking for the way in! Rooms are comfortable and spacious. Breakfasts are huge and cater for every possible taste from cheese and olives, via umpteen meats and preserves, to sparkling wine and bountiful fruit. Swimming pool gleamed. Staff were friendly. We called into the pousada in Sagres for an afternoon cup of tea while on a trip away from lagos. We were very impressed with the facilities there and although happy with our accommodation in Lagos, decided on the spot to try another pousada, and settled on Tavires as it is close to Faro and best suited for our last night on the Algarve. we arrived before midday and decided to ask if we could leave our car there while we explored the town, as the hotel is slap bang in the middle of a very small medieval old town, and parking is at a premium.... more

We have just returned from a long weekend at this beautiful pousada and didn't have a single complaint. A wonderful old convent built around a serene inner courtyard in a charming small town (the nicest town we saw on the Algarve) and it is as quietly elegant as it is discrete. We had a superior room with terrace and everything including the marble bathroom was generous and well stocked. We certainly didn't have any problems with hot water and the shower was powerful. My surprise Birthday present was four days at this Pousada. The building is a 16th century Monastery which has been converted to a superb Hotel. The attention to detail and high quality of materials is to be seen everywhere, from the decoration of all rooms, public and bedrooms; to the flower arrangements, furniture, garden design and swimming pool. A converted convent - now a hotel with luxury fittings - the building was stunning. Sadly the service was appalling throughout and no real apologies were ever made. Worst of all was the resturant - in over 30 years of travelling this was the worst I've ever encountered: my wife's starter wasn't rbought until my 3rd course, tables weren't cleared and the food was very poor. My wife and I have just spent 4 nights at this Pousada, what a fabulous hotel it is. Every one of the staff was very friendly and helpful. The restaurant was very enjoyable, although the dinner menu did not change during our stay, we would have had no problem finding something to enjoy for the rest of our stay. We stayed in a Superior room, it was a beautiful room, it even had a mezzanine where we could sit and enjoy a quiet read. Spent two weeks in mid September 2006 at the Pousada in Tavira. It is a stunning building, converted from an old convent in the old Jewish quarter of Tavira. The swimming pool and gardens are lovely, there is an air of tranquility and hushed peace about the place. This hotel is a converted convent, where they have retained the style of the old buildings but all the additions (bar, pool, etc) and the rooms themselves are in a classy modern style. The hotel is right in the middle of Tavira next to the castle and the church, with so nothing is more than a few minutes walk away. The rooms are very comfortable, goods beds, no noise, fantastic bathroom, everything that you want in a good hotel.
