Lovely hotel- not too big-tasteful- not an ugly concrete sqare. Very friendly helpful staff. Kept very clean. Lovely white sand beach onto turquoise waters. Some white sandbags on beach immediately in front of hotel, but you can walk slightly to the right to get around them, so not a problem. Had a junior suite without seaview which was located on a quiet corridor on the ground floor, at the front of the hotel facing Constituition Ave. Lovely room overlooking the gardens. The suites look exactly like the hotel's website. Our maid Addy kept our room spotless and amused us with her towel art every day. We were upgraded on the first night for free to a side ocean view suite on the same side of the hotel, but declined to pay for the upgrade for the rest of the holiday, as we didn't think it was worth the extra money and actually preferred the room we had originally booked. We were in room 107. We were also given a US$40 dollar compensation for the inconvenience of moving suite.
Personally I wouldn't have a suite overlooking the main pool, unless you like lots of noise. The entertainment team have all sorts of activities going on around the main pool during the day, and the evening show and Gravitas bar keep the noise up most of the evening until 11pm.
The standard rooms are on the 3rd floor facing the swim-up bar, which can get noisy with people slowly get drunk as the day goes on. You also have to share the terrace with your neighbours, so don't op for one of these rooms if you want peace and quiet!
There is a great little jacuzzi on the 5th floor which overlooks the 3rd floor pool and has views out to the ocean. It is generally lovely and peaceful, as its quiet difficult to find. There are also hammocks there for a lazy afternoon snooze.
The hotel has the usual international buffet together with some mexican specialities, and caters for most tastes. Thank you so much to Juan, our waitor for most evenings we ate in the buffet, as he helped us with our food allergy choices. The mexican restaurant was great- fab food- excellent service and again very helpful in dealing with our wheat allergy. The same could not be said of the Italian restaurant. The chef could not be bothered to adapt anything for us, so don't bother going there if you have an allergy to wheat. Hence I've given the hotel a slight markdown on the food front.
In future I would probably not go all-inclusive here, as its so easy to go out into Playa del Carmen to all the restaurants in 5th Avenue which is just a block away. Overall a great hotel and we had a great time here and would definitely recommend it to others.

Hotel fantastic. Food is excellent I was a bit worried about having a dodgy tummy but all food was fresh and wasn’t left out all day. Rooms superbly cleaned everyday. Staff very friendly especially ****** on the beach bringing drinks all the time. Hotel kids club not very good for English as staff and kids in there were Spanish. Pool lovely. Evening entertainment dull mainly Mexican dancing which all looks the same, Michael Jackson show is worth watching though.
Entertainment staff lovely. Waiters fantastic love kids could easily get seat in restaurant no queuing. The suites are spacious but ask for sea view as hotel is right on beach and lovely. Recommend visit to dolphin discovery well worth the money cheaper than xcaret if you just want to do dolphins and not spend all day there.
I would go back to Gran Porto if they improved evening entertainment we found it a bit boring on eve and there wasn’t anything for our 4 year old to do. But if you are honeymooning like us you will find it fantastic.

I would not recommend this particular resort.
When we arrived they put us up in a hotel across the street that was still under construction ( no services at all, and men working right outside your room until 1 am then again at 6 am), they even told many other guests they did not have rooms for them and sent them to other resorts. The front desk was rude and seemed to not care that they were treating paying guests terribly.
It did not matter how friendly or calm you were they just did not care what they did with you once you arrived. I would be worried about the overbooking problems this resort seems to have. Even though it is very beautiful and the location is great I would not feel comfortable booking here again because the front desk and management staff at this resort are terrible and can not be trusted to give you what you have paid for. We were not the only couple treated this way, if I were guessing I’d say at least 45 % of the guests had trouble at check in.
As far as the food goes it was above average and the service was great. Like any all inclusive the buffet does get a bit boring after the week but this resort is located just a block away from 5th ave. so we tried to hit as many of the different restaurants along that strip as we could. I would definitely take a trip down 5th ave while you are in Playa del Carmen, great food, shopping and live music. Playa del Carmen was BEAUTIFUL and we are going back in January 2006 we just will not be staying at the Gran Porto Real...its not worth the money and we travel enough to know that they do not treat you anywhere near as good as many of the other resorts in Mexico that we have stayed at.

Great hotel on the beach, but only a 5 minute walk from 5th Avenue, the main street for shopping, bars and restaurants in the town, so it was easy to go out at night. Area very safe,we even walked the beach at night-completely safe.
Went through first choice and had a great experience., however they only offer all-inclusive option. There are so many great restaurants in the town, the all-inclusive option is a bit of a waste. I think if we went again, we would choose to go bed and breakfast, and so take advantage of the local eateries. Food was good but not excellent in the hotel. Buffet had lots of variety catering for all tastes, even us and we have food allergies. Didn't like the Italian- the chef was incapable of catering for a wheat allergy, so we didn't go back. However, the Mexican restaurant was fab and had excellent customer service.
We had a Junior Suite without sea view. The hotel played the free upgrade for first night game. We chose not to play and had our booked grade of suite for the rest of our holiday. Actually the side sea-view upgrade wasn't worth the extra money in our view, as you can only see the ocean when you go out on the balcony. Other than that it is exactly the same as the Junior Suite. Our room faced Constitution Avenue and overlooked the gardens, as did the upgraded suite. We were quite happy as our corridor was in a peaceful part of the hotel. Actually rooms facing the main pool have to be the noisiest in the resort. The entertainment team are busy around the pool from 10.00am to 4pm, and in the evening the shows are also around the main pool as is a very noisy bar.
There is also a 'tranquil pool' on the 3rd floor by the standard rooms which is OK unless there are a lot of noisy drunk Americans sitting at the swim-up bar getting drunker and louder as the day goes on.
We found the jacuzzi on the 5th floor with a lovely view over the 3rd floor pool and the ocean in the distance, and had this to ourselves, complete with hammocks for an afternoon snooze- Bliss!!
Beach has beautiful white coral sand so it doesn't get hot. There are samll white sandbags in front of the hotel to prevent erosion- just walk around them to the right and it is fine- very shallow so safe for small children. We walked past the sister hotel The Royal next door. Their beach had a whiff of 'drains' whilst we were there. The public beaches either side of the hotels were beautiful.
The staff at the gran porto are so friendly and helpful, they work so hard and really are a credit to their company. Overall we loved this hotel and would definitely recommend if you want to be in the middle of the action.
