Pleasant stay with disappointments

"I booked this hotel through the "finest hotels of the world" websire. The pictures on this defiitely reflect the look of the hotel however the facilities listed do not. We booked a panormaic sea view suite. This was meant to include a jacuzzi in the room and wone on arrival of which there was neither. The wine I was not so bothered about, however, I was rather disappointed that we did not get a jacuzzi. The hotel facilities list on the website state that there is an "a la carte" restaurant and a jacuzzi as part of the pool. This is clearly not the case - there is no jacuzzi and the food that is served is delivered from a local take away shop in Hersonissos. The remainder of the facilities are very good, although we were asked to remain quiet one evening when we were using the hotel bar (not just us, all the guests) even though the staff were encouraging us to buy drinks. If they wasnted us to keep the noise down (and it was not loud as there were few customers in there) they should have shut the bar rather than taking people's money from them. This was not the fault of the bar staff (Marion and Lee) who were very good but a result of the owners making a complaint.

The surrounding area is lovely and a great place for a base as a holiday - as the gentleman in the review below has pointed out. The restaurants in the villages are excellent although beware of the greek wine! If you like a cabernet sauvignon and are not a huge fan of sherry beware! patrikos has a good choice.

After we arrived home, I emailed the customer services at "finest hotels of the world" to comment on the poor facilities compared to that stated on the website and the fact that as an international website I would expect the standard to be of a 4* not a 2*+. I understand that greek hotel standards can be different to other countries howeveer I would expect an international hotel website to point this out and rate accordingly. She forwarded an email to the owners and I received a very offensive reposnse from them including a comment that I was clearly wrong and that there was a jacuzzi and an "a la carte" restaurant. Please let me know if you disagree!

I would recommend the resort but would stay at a different hotel. I woudl not stay at this place again.

Special mention to Marion though who did an excellent job.

A cherished stay at Amazones Village Suites,Piskopiano

"A panoramic sea view and night views of the lights of Hersonissos from the balcony of room E1 were just 2 of the pleasures I experienced on this great holiday.Myself a 60+ veteran of many foreign trips, and a cabbie chum Niall enjoyed a wonderful few days. The apartments are comfortable and practical, although a little susceptible to ingress of water,in abnormal weather. The breakfast spread was the envy of others. The bar stayed open late, and was the most enjoyed feature of this holiday. The playing of live music was tolerated by the hotel staff. Thanks to Katerina for her pleasant smile, and tolerance to ageing eccentrics.

The three villages area Old Hersonissos,Piskopiano and Koutouloufari are blessed with many family run tavernas, and is well recommended by me as a holiday venue providing a varied and interesting area to amble ,browse and seriously eat, drink, and make merry.I must mention personally the members of staff

that made our holiday so enjoyable. Katerina,Marion,Dian,Lee,Helena......SIMPLY THE BEST...

Apologies to Niko for his fruitless visit when my key was inarcerated in my room for the second time in a week...HAHAHA

Many thanks u lot for a great time...Paul from Stretford

A Fantastic holiday!

"We had a fantastic time staying at Amazones Village Suites. The accommodation was really good with breathtaking views from our balcony - would recommend paying a bit extra for sea view!! Room had air conditioning which was ice cold - great in the heat. Good room facilities aswell although we didn't eat in the room at all - too many great restaurants nearby. Room was cleaned daily and there was free wine and water on arrival in the room, as well as fruit.

Dijan, the hotel waiter / barman (although so much more than that) did absolutely everything to make our trip really special and went out of his way to ensure we had everything we needed and was so friendly - as were all the staff. Tip him well please as he works so hard but doesn't expect any tips in return and is happy to do his job to make people have a great holiday. Mishko, the puppy was hilarious and it was lovely having a dog about the place - a home from home.

All the guests were friendly too and there was a good atmosphere in the hotel, especially around the pool where you could always get a sunlounger. Nice to go somewhere where there are not too many brits! Once again, the view is stunning from the pool terrace and helps you forget about the stresses of home and work!

Restaurant wise, we would recommend Mezes, a Greek restaurant in Kautaulafari, the next village along from Piskopiano. Food delicious here and would recommend the traditional mezes meal. Also 'Avli' - a restaurant down in Hersonossis which serves lovely traditional Greek food. Finally, a place called Elisavet - in the heart of Piskopiano with lovely views over the sea. Apparently, the small Greek restaurant next door to Elisavet is meant to be great too - but always busy so we couldn't get a table - but meant to be worth going to as it's run by a Greek man and his wife who cook all the food themselves.

Pub wise, there are a lot of Irish bars in Hersonossis as many Irish visit it as opposed to Malia - which is the English equivalent (and recommended to avoid). The best pub in Piskopiano was Nostos bar, run by Manos and his wife Lucy. It was such a friendly bar with plenty of free shots and karaoke - and a great atmosphere. Went there every night - which we don't normally do! One night, we ventured into Hersonossis but turned round again and came back to the village as it was far too busy whereas Piskopiano is more relaxed but still busy enough to enjoy yourselves.

Only bad thing to say about Hersonossis is that the beach is not great - but there a lovely beaches not far away if you hire a car. Lots of hills to walk up aswell so not recommended for people who find walking difficult.

So overall a great holiday made special by the great accommodation and hotel facilities, breathtaking views and friendly people. Would definitely go back to Crete, to Piskopiano and to Amazones Village Suites - and wouldn't say that about any other place in Greece that we've been to. Go there and enjoy!!! (and say hi to Dijan and Mishko!)

Home from home

"We booked this hotel 4 days before we left the UK. We knew we were taking a chance finding it on the internet, but what a find. We had 2 suites, one for us, one for the kids (next door). The rooms were basic but spacious.Being on a B&B basis, the kitchen area was good. 4 hot rings, microwave, fridge with icebox and sandwich toaster and sink with plenty of hot water. Spa bath in a modern bathroom. There are more restaurants than you can shake a stick at in the area, but some nights it was nice to stay in and make dinner with the kids. Breakfast is a cold buffet style and you can order lunches at the hotel but as they do not have a kitchen, all food is brought in from a local restaurant. The food is good but takes a little while to arrive on the back of a moped! The large towns nearby are busy and noisy at night with all the shops and sports bars you could want, but not for us.

Being up in the hills, I would not recommend this hotel for anyone with walking difficulties. Some areas are very steep and there are lots of steps. But saying that, it is a beautiful area with a fantastic view all around. Sunrise and sunset is breathtaking. Caterina runs the hotel and is one of the nicest people you will ever meet. She speaks fluent English and will help you with anything. Her young sons help around the place and they have recently acquired a puppy which is very popular with the kids. The grounds are well kept and the pool is not huge but sufficient. There are only 40 rooms and the place never really seems busy or rushed, so you can relax very quickly. Other guests were mainly from Holland and Germany but lots of Greek families were there, so I think that is a good sign. Amazones is a good base to visit other areas as it is quite central. There are lots of buses and taxis, mopeds or quadbikes to hire. We will certainly go back.

Had an amazing holiday!

"We had an amazing holiday!! We have only just arrived back & wish we were still there!! Lovely hotel with nice rooms & we had a fantastic view. Nice swimming pool again with a great view of the mountain behind and the sea in front!!

If you have walking difficulties we wouldn't reccommend it as it is on the top of the hillside. We thought it was a great location nice and quite with a few restaurants & bars nearby. The nearby town of Hersonissos was within walking distance if you wanted the nightlife but again is an up hill walk back to the hotel. Overall we had a fantastic time & would definitely go back in the future!

Spacious apartment in well run complex

"The rooms were very spacious with all the amenities for self catering although we preferred to eat in the local restaurants. The maid was very quick and efficient, even washing our coffee cups to keep the place spick and span. The breakfast was delicious with los of choice to suit all tastes. A really good place to stay"

Excellent Stay

"We stayed here for 8 nights and enjoyed every moment. Our room was the Aristomache (H1) which had an excellent view of the sea and the village. Katerina was the lovely lady in charge, and was helpful when we had any questions regarding our stay. Breakfast is included and they set out a range of excellent food for all tastes. Someone comes in everyday to clean and change our towels, except Sundays. There is also a pool on site, however we spent our time on the beach. Surprisingly, many people staying here chose to hang out at the pool everyday. We will be definitely be staying here next time we are in Crete.

In the evening, you can relax here and enjoy happy hour or walk to the village of Piskapiano where there are lovely restaurants, and if you walk a further 6 minutes you enter in the village of Koutalafaria (sp) where there are also some more shops and excellent restaurants.

The closest major city was Hersonissos if you are looking for more of an obnoxious night. In my personal opinion, my husband and I did not enjoy our evening there. There are too many early 20 yr olds discovering the ill effects of alcohol. You could smell it on the streets. Didn't find many great authentic Greek restaurants; however we didnt want to stay there too long to explore any further. Also the town is over run by young men on the quad bikes. Chav fest, really. But this sort of ambience may float your boat.

Overall, to experience the hospitality of the greeks and the amazing traditional food, explore the island and you will discover many beautiful beaches. Trek through the mountains to the south part of the island, and visit the many palaces and other historical sites. The best thing to do is to rent a car in Crete. This truly made our lives much easier and we saw a lot more.

Enjoy your trip!

Fantastic place

"Have just returned from the most idyllic holiday in Crete. Stayed at the Amazones Village Suites in a village on the outskirts of Hersonissos (not Stallis - although they are owned by the same group). The views were fantastic, the hotel of an exceptional standard with spacious rooms that were spotlessly clean. The maid even did your washing up if you left it(thank you). Air con included, fresh linen/towels daily. The pool is beautiful, again with fantastic views and very rarely that busy that you can't get a lounger (which are made of wicker not plastic). The staff can't do enough for you and everything is done quickly and efficiently. There is a buffet breakfast with plenty to offer (although no fry up for those of you who can't do without) but it was so hot that fruit, croissants etc were far more digestable. (There are tavernas in the village that do offer a fry up if you have withdrawal symptoms). Piskopiano village and Koutalafari next door are wonderful places to eat with traditional cretan dishes. The town of Hersonissos is a 15 min walk away but noisy and packed in comparison. The hotel bar is friendly and many a night we sat drinking till late. There is no evening entertainment but that did not matter as it meant we were all able to sleep without being disturbed . The only point I would make is that you need good walking shoes as it is very very hilly, but its a good way to work of all the lovely local food. Am already planning to go back next year!!!!"

Would definitely go back

"The modern Amazones Village apartment complex was based at the back of Piskopiano further up the hill giving you a fantastic view of the sea and surrounding areas. Being this far up also gave you the comfort of a gentle breeze while relaxing by the pool and bar area. The pool area was fantastic, with beautiful views. We went in June when the complex was still quiet so there was no problem getting sun beds. However, we imagine it may be harder in peak season.

The rooms were cleaned daily and we also received fresh towels every day, which we were not expecting. The bathroom suite was nearly new with a shower over the bath. We had a garden suite which had twin beds rather than a double and also the view was of a wall rather than a garden so would recommend opting for the sea view if your planning to spend much time on the balcony.

All the staff were really friendly and always smiled even though they worked all the hours in the day every day! Dejan who works in the bar was absolutely fantastic - really friendly guy who bent over backwards to help you. Breakfast in the morning was ok - a typical foreign buffet - don't expect eggs and bacon!

Piskopiano itself is a sweet village with plenty of tavernas and restaurants for all tastes - from gaudy Irish bars to traditional Greek restaurants. The adjoining village - Koutalafari is much the same but bigger. We're quite keen on eating out and try to avoid the touristy places and found some really nice restaurants. Mezes, in Koutalafari offers a selection of meze plates, which are delicious and fantastic value for money and an all round great eating experience as you can take your time over all the dishes and watch the world go by with accommodating service. We are also keen on wine but would actually recommend going for 'carafes' of the house wine which are generally ok, especially as the cheaper bottles are really poor which are a lot more expensive than a carafe of wine. Avoid Gallini’s in Koutalafari - really expensive and absolutely awful food!

General rule for eating out - look for restaurants with traditional wood ovens (can usually be seen from outside) and order dishes, which are cooked in it (especially lamb!). Dishes are usually slow cooked in it all day and taste amazing.

Old Hersonnisis, which is the other side of Piskopiano, is another sweet village. There is a beautiful square with restaurants round the edge. As soon as you walk into the square all the waiters walk to the front to persuade you to come to their restaurant, which is frustrating but do not be intimidated.

New Hersonissos down by the sea really isn't our scene - if you want gaudy bars and restaurants where they have pictures of the food then you'll love it. It is mainly clubs and big bars where you have lots of reps baying you in with free shots etc. There a boat trips available from the harbour that are worth a look at. The beaches are tiny so we didn't bother with them as we imagined they would get a bit claustrophobic. For reference – a taxi from Heraklion airport to the complex is 35 Euros and there a plenty queuing outside the airport.

Overall, we would really recommend the Amazones Village complex as it has all the facilities you need, is really clean and has friendly staff, as well as having surrounding areas for all – whether you like just eating out and a few drinks in the relaxing villages, or a full clubbing experience in New Hersonissos down by the sea.

Second honeymoon!

"Visited Crete for the first time and stayed at Amazones Villages Suite from 30 April to 11 May 2007.

Hadn't been on holiday without the family in y-e-a-r-s so wanted to go somewhere peaceful and have a good rest. Couldn't have chosen anywhere better.

Slightly uphill with beautiful view. No noise in the evenings so slept well. Buffet breakfast more than adequate. Spacious suites are cleaned and clean towels provided EVERY day! Staff really friendly and helpful.

Local taverns within 5 minutes walking distance.

Only a 20 minute walk down to Hersonissos.

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Would recommend it to anyone (apart from those with a walking disability) needing a break.
